  1. Argenis is staying (for now, anyway), so our Disciple of Death nightmare is over.

Argos staying is kind of really dumb but what else is he going to do anyway?

This is heavy "connecting the dots and coming up with the wrong picture" territory but

    • LU said they wanted more wrestling women in Season 2
    • LU Dark Match vet Cheerleader Melissa ran the first ever Stardom USA show
    • LU people were in attendance

Mia Yim main evented the show. She would probably be good in LU if she was free from TNA, but it sounded like she wasn't having good matches in TNA? I do not know from first hand experience.

  2. according to the WON

IN, possibly: Speedball Mike Bailey, Flamita and Rey Horuz

OUT, likely but not sure: Alberto

(they're talking with the Young Bucks but they're not ever going to sign the Young Bucks)

My assumption is that if Speedball and Flamita are really coming into to AAA as scheduled, then it's part of a package deal with them working LU too. It really doesn't make any sense for Flamita to be giving up his full time* Dragon Gate spot to work the second and third match on AAA shows alone, so this has to be part of the inducement. Bailey would've been recruited from a PWG show where the LU people scout, and it's probably that he was already going to working LU and AAA decided to use him too. Rey Horuz would be very good too (and they could use Rey Jr. as his mentor!) but I feel less certain than this one.

    * - with the LU & AAA schedules, it seems sort of possible he could still come in and out of Dragon Gate (and Ricochet could do the same with NJPW), but who knows if the Japan promotions would be open to that.

  3. Dave also said that they'll be lowering the production cost in ways 'viewers won't notice'. Then he goes on to say that it will also likely mean fewer episodes. I'LL NOTICE THAT, DAVE.

I know the original plan was for them to do 40 in season 2 (which is basically what they did this season), and the lowering the production cost was all about the cost per episode not the total cost, so I'm thinking there's a pretty good chance they're still doing. But not just saying it in the press release is odd.

  4. In general, they've said they'd fly people in from US, Mexico and Canada, but those based in Europe and Japan are outside of their budget.

Sabre's moved to California (I think) so that's not a problem. They would've seen him look good in PWG, so that helps. The biggest obstacle is working around his NOAH schedule.

  5. She suffered a serious injury about a month ago so I'm not even sure she'd be available if they wanted her in December. Good thing they have the storyline out to have her disappear thanks to that awesome ending sequence.

Sexy's now hinting she's stuck in her brace for at least 3 more weeks. If she gets out then, it'd seem like she might be able to make it by late December, maybe January.  The bigger issue feels like Sexy Star seemingly giving up on wrestling regularly - she only did the UK show and TripleMania after LU wrapped. She RT-ed the LU return notice and sounds like she wants to return, but there was the WON story about her wanting to retire before. I'm willing to believe any outcome when it comes to Sexy Star.

(Meanwhile, AAA has started adding on more masked women who seem to be better in the ring - also Goya. Hoping La Hiedra or Lady Shani at least get a look on this show in hopes of taking over the 'good fighting mask Mexican character' so Sexy Star can do something that might work better for her.)

I think the Cheerleader Melissa thing came from me, in this actual thread, where I pointed out the pieces fit for her but it doesn't necessarily mean it'll be her. Bigger picture: I kind of wonder how much work has been put into these casting decisions since they stopped taping. I'm sure they had an ideas of where they'd go, but they've also had a few months of idle time to rethink things since they've been powerless to actually sign people. They've also had a few more months of reaction to the show to use as they see fit) Now that the wheels are officially back in motion but the time is finite (3 months or less?), they've got to start going after people and figuring things out in earnest. (And also making sure visas are properly filled out.)

Or maybe they won't for a while - it seemed like the indy guys weren't being actually signed until the week before the show last time. That caused chaos and should be learned from but you can't assume learning.

what I'm saying is that if you have a website that needs content, maybe now's the time to do the "here's 3 people Lucha Underground should hire for season 2" piece, maybe.

  6. They've vaguely alluded to doing that after they got the season 2 deal done, but haven't said anything more.

Did you notice Hulu (unlike Netflix) will actually respond to you if you ask about them carrying Lucha Underground?

We don't have the rights to El Rey shows like Lucha Underground at the moment, but we'd be happy to share your interest in it!

They were previously saying "we don't have it now, but we'll look into it." Guess someone looked!

It kind of suggests to me that the issue with them not being on any streaming service might be on a higher level than just this show - like Netflix/Amazon/Hulu wants to pay [x] because for these shows because El Rey isn't a big deal, but say the Burnett people are holding out for [bigger number than X] because it's a Burnett show and they don't want to diminish the value of their other properties.

I think that's an important thing to remember in the whole scope of Lucha Underground. It's not a stand alone property - there's no real life Dario who's got complete control of this show. It's a little part of a lot of different people's portfolios who sometimes have different big picture agendas that take precedence. If LU became valuable, it'd get more precedence, but it could use some help getting there.

  7. Is it just me or have the CMLL minis matches gotten a lot better compared to where they were a year ago? They're still kind of botchy in parts, but it seems like they're getting bolder with highspots and such.

I didn't like that match as much as everyone else, but losing Pequeno Warrior was a big addition by subtraction. And Mercurio has gotten much better or I'm just noticing he's really good now.

  8. Blue Demon Jr. not agreeing to lose to people is definitely a thing that happens. And Demon was in for the last weekend of shows in 2014 but never got put on TV in a match - only did the sit down segment with Chavo and wrestled a dark match, while Pentagon beat Super Fly in a meaningless match. That was before Pentagon was breaking arms, so before any tease of the Vampiro feud and Pentagon was just not doing anything and lost in the mix, which fits Vampiro's story. And it's the last taping of the year, so it fit as something where Vamp pitched DJ on new ideas for him after the break. I like this theory, it has some promise.

Edit: wait, that's even the match where Pentagon asked Vamp to mentor him, only it got edited out when they decided to do the storyline. Hmmm.

  9. In other unsolvable mysteries not involving Matanza, did anyone else notice this from last week's Observer

One of the partners has given the figure of $400,000 per episode spent for season one, and there were 39 episodes taped. That doesn’t include other start-up costs.

Dave's been working off $500,000 per hour all season until now ("20 million" comes from 500K x 40 hours of TV), so I guess the show just got 4 million dollars cheaper? Adjusting the cost by 20% seems like it should've required an explanation. Maybe it was just a typo?

400 or 500 sounds like a lot of money to me, person who doesn't make TV, until I read the other El Rey show costs $2.5 mil an episode. TV is expensive!

(I presume the IWRG FILL shows cost about $25.00 USD.)

  10. I think you're right that it had to be Pentagon breaking Alberto's arm if it was going to happen.

But, they had teased Vamp versus Pentagon as far back as Pentagon attacking Melissa, so that had to pay off at some point. (Or maybe Vamp just went into business for himself! I never know.) And taking Mundo out of that angle leaves him with all the reason to turn rudo but no one suitable to betray. Maybe he never even turns rudo - the Alberto/Mundo vignettes could've been taped later on after they knew they were doing that program, and there's no direct sign someone's going to turn to that point*, but it's hard to figure what Johnny does the rest of the season. Maybe more of a program with Cage?

    * though Mundo's whole reason for being there - finally winning the big title whatever it takes - suggested he was going to have to turn if he couldn't beat Puma, and he couldn't beat Puma

On the other hand, if Mundo turning rudo was a back up bail out plan to fix a problem, then he's even more the MVP of this show than we knew.
