  1. I thought I'd throw this out there, because I learned the hard way after buying Bully and don't want to make the same mistake again:  When you buy an older PS2 game off PSN that hasn't been remastered in HD, is there any way to make the game not look like total crap on an HDTV?

There are a bunch of graphics options. They probably work better for 2D games like Fire Pro, but they help.

  2.

Man...my iPhone 5 battery is fucking awful. I used to be able to make it through a full day without needing to charge and now the battery just drops like a rock. It also does the annoying thing where it's supposedly at 20 to 30 percent and then will all of a sudden drop to 5% and then turn off. If I manage to plug it in before then, it jumps back up to 25%. Just an example, but that's pretty close to being accurate.

So now I feel like I need a new phone. The OnePlus One still looks like the best option out there, but I would only be able to get one by invite only and I'd like to stick with an iPhone. Getting a new contract is also out of the question because I'm done with that shit. I really love Ting. I went from paying $100 a month with Sprint to $46 with Ting. Maybe I'll try and find a refurbished 5s or something, but the bigger screen is so appealing on the iPhone 5s, as is the aspect of a fresher OS since I'm getting a little tired of iOS.

Is there any type of warranty with Apple? I've never had an iPhone and the last time I had an iPod was like 2005/2006-ish, so I'm not too familiar with how they are with fixing/replacing things.

Regular warranty on just about everything Apple is 1 year parts/labor/repairs and 90 days phone support (after 90 days you have to go to an Apple Store for free support). You can extend with AppleCare or get a third party warranty like from Squaretrade. AppleCare Plus, which includes accidental damage coverage, is only available on iPhones and iPads. If you want accidental damage coverage on a Macbook, you need a third party warranty.

My experiences with Apple support have generally been excellent. When my MacBook needed a new SSD under warranty, it came at a time when a bunch failed suddenly so they gave me a bigger drive to get it done faster. When I went in to get an out of warranty battery replacement, I wasn't charged because my serial number was in a range that either had a known defect or had seen an unusually high number of battery replacements.

If something gets completely messed up (breaks out of warranty, it gets accidentally damaged without AppleCare Plus), go to an Apple Store instead of dealing with phone support if you can. They have extra leeway and might spot you a one time free repair/replacement.

  3. Read Bruno Lauer's (Harvey Whippleman) book the other day. He ended up coming off as rather crude, crass, and honest, which I liked. He was blatant and unapologetic about his alcoholism, homophobia, and I was rather surprised about the people he really seems to like and dislike as they tend to run opposite of the common opinions in wrestling (Loves Kevin Dunn and John Laurinaitis, hates Paul Heyman and Bruce Pritchard). I honestly had no idea he was in the wreck that killed Joey Marella. He blames him for the accident and then spends most of the chapter putting him down as a loser. At the very end he pretty much admits he's a gopher and is the main reason he's still employed. Not entirely sure what I was expecting, but to be honest I was a little disappointed. There are some fairly strange Sid stories in there, but unfortunately no pictures whatsoever. So if you're looking for tons of road stories from the dying days of the southern territories, him being drunk, and being assaulted by larger wrestlers have at it. Otherwise, give it a pass.

That kind of sums up my thoughts except I would've also mentioned him calling Rhyno a pussy for getting WWE-covered neck surgery.

  4. Actually, he may not have any financial motivation at all for re-releasing the book. I know a guy who's cowritten several wrestling autobiographies, and a lot of times, the coauthors get paid flat rates, with no royalties. So if the Gary Hart guy was already paid for his work, he may not get a dime off of any new editions that are published.

Then, the publisher should offer him a new deal, either a new flat fee or a percentage of new sales. There's been an offer to buy his share of the copyright. He won't go for that either.
  5.

For those who might be interested, I've put together a Kindle version of Fall Guys, the seminal 1937 expose, that you can now buy at Amazon. Buy it and you support me actually writing something myself.

    w2orvn.jpg

If you can somehow make that available to amazon UK users I will definitely buy it.

It should be soon. On the Kindle Direct Publishing site it says it's already live on the UK site and other international Amazon sites when it's only live on the U.S. site, so I sent a support inquiry in. Hopefully I'll have an answer shortly.

  6. This might make me sound stupid, but did Fall Guys expose wrestling as a work or was it starting to become common knowledge by the time it was released and the book just confirmed things?

There had been plenty of newspaper stories about wrestling being a work for decades but Fall Guys was the first real insider behind the curtain look.

  7. Power Move Pro Wrestling reference! That game fucking ruled! I still randomly blurt out some of the things the audience would yell.

Don't forget the ring announcer: "He gets all of the ladies...and some of the men! LANCE DEW-LOCKKKKK!"

  8. I really need to eyeball some shit and get me an actual good 5.1 receiver and speakers.  Fucking HATE my ass for goin' frugal and getting some RCA piece of shit.  It's the fucking worst.  Audio takes 5 seconds to come out when you're coming from silence.  It pops and makes me wait 5 seconds to get back to the audio.  If a movie has a very quiet scene the audio will cut in and out.  Holy Jesus this thing is garbage.

Maybe get that PS4 7.1 headphone set.  It's supposed to work on PC.

    OK, this is fairly easy.

For a receiver, pretty much anything Onkyo, Denon, Pioneer, or Yahama is good, though Yamaha might be the best. From there it's all about what features you need. Make sure to check for refurbished deals on ShopOnkyo.com (Onkyo's own outlet site) and Accessories4Less.com. Both have really good deals on receivers, usually with a 1 year warranty instead of the 2 year warranty you'd get on a new receiver.

For speakers, what are you looking for? The best bang for your buck is the Pioneer Andrew Jones series, but it consists of towers and bookshelf speakers. If you need satellite speakers, you want either the Energy Take Classic/Take Five or the similar speakers from Monoprice. You can mix and match if need be, and while some people don't recommend it, I've been OK with it. Onkyo's set of tower speakers has been on sale recently at Frys.com (NewEgg and Frys have a lot of the best deals) and they're really well-reviewed, though I've never heard them. I LOVE my Andrew Jones towers, though. They're an amazing bargain. Match them up with any kind of halfway decent receiver (including a stereo receiver) and you'll get awesome results with both digital and analog sources.

  9. Speaking of battery life, for some reason the charge on both of my Galaxy devices has gone completely downhill... my tablet went down 70% in ONE HOUR yesterday despite me not doing anything out of the ordinary with it. I'm backing up my files and resetting it- has anyone else had this come up?

    How old are they?

  10. So I got my Oneplus One a couple days ago.  So far I like it.  It's not leaps and bounds different or better than my Nexus 5.  I do like a lot of the things that Cyanogen brings to the table and I like the screen size and clarity.  It's a fast phone but so was the Nexus.  No lag or anything.  But where it really shines compared to my previous phones is battery life.  Right now I'm sitting at 1d 7h 53min on my battery since the last time I charged it and I'm at 27% battery life.  I'm at 5hrs of screen on time and I use it a lot for streaming music also.  Wifi has been on the whole time as well as location services but bluetooth has been off since I don't use any bluetooth devices.  No QC issues or anything like that.  Touchscreen functions perfectly, colors are all beautiful, no random reboots or anything like that.  So far so good.  Definitely recommend it.

The battery life is what really sounds awesome to me (how much were you getting on your Nexus 5), and I keep considering buying it and trading in my Nexus 5 (fingers crossed that I'll see a noticeable difference with Lollipop), but the support horror stories and lack of anyone to repair it in the U.S. is a dealbreaker. I'm not waiting for a week or two to hear from support/potentially set up a repair and then paying $40 to send it to China if there's a problem.

Have you seen ANY performance improvements at all from the additional RAM? One thing that drives me crazy is how Disqus and other comment systems on mobile versions of blogs slow the browser to a crawl, which you would think wouldn't happen on a mobile optimized page.

And how do the cameras compare?

  11. RE: Hair

It is always going to look like shit in games that have as much free range of motion and as many animations to cycle through. I remember in the trailers for MLB 14 The Show they were showing off hair that swayed when guys moved....game came out.....and nope.

This is about as good as hair is going to look for a while.

EA Sports UFC pulled it off just fine:

  12. He's not really wrong and even then he's still overrating it.

The graphics...they made nice models of certain guys and paraded them around for months. By and large, the graphics are terrible. Long hair looks PS1-level bad, and even more so on the women. Go play as AJ Lee and get back to us.

I'd really like to know for sure whether or not it's always been the same engine since the PS1 days. It's obvious that they've recycled animations for that long, though.

And on that note: Graphics aren't just pretty models. The animation is incredibly awful with tons of missing frames.

  13. Kirby's Dream Course is a lot of fun. Probably one of Nintendo's weirdest games and the difficulty spikes out of nowhere, but I've always loved it.

There are more great games from late in the console's life cycle than a lot of people remember, including DKC 3 (it's probably not as good as the first two games, but it's still a really high quality game), Super Mario RPG, Yoshi's Island, and Tetris Attack. I have no idea why Nintendo kind of gave up on reviving Tetris Attack/Panel de Pon/Pokemon Puzzle League, because it's probably their best puzzle game.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters is rarely talked about anymore, but is a really solid SNES-exclusive (the NES and Genesis versions are actually different games and there was no arcade version) fighting game.

  14. The doorbuster TVs are pretty much the ONLY thing that doesn't end up online during the Thanksgiving/Black Friday sales nowadays. And as Tabe said, if you have a Discover card, the model number is in the ad, and you can get it somewhere else before Black Friday, you're covered there, too.

PS4 and XBox One deals are nice if you haven't gotten one yet. Kind of sad to see the customary PS3 bundle of awesomeness gone, though.

Best Buy is, unsurprisingly after the last few years, the store who's the most gung ho about Black Friday deals. Lots of nice game deals as always, and some really good prepaid phone bargains, too: For example, the AT&T GoPhone version of the Nokia Lumia 635, which is considered the best smartphone under $100, is going to be $40, which is 50% off the current $80 street price. GoPhone-branded phones are not locked to the GoPhone service; they can be used with a SIM card from ANY provider that rides AT&T's network, whether it's GoPhone, Cricket, Straight Talk w/ an AT&T SIM, any other AT&T MVNO, or even post-paid AT&T if you want a spare phone, something cheap for your kid on your family plan, etc.

They also have the best prices you'll find all year on Apple products, like a variety big discounts on Macs, $100 off all iPad Air models, etc.

  15. I flashed 5.0 on to my phone this morning.  Early impressions are that it's pretty great, or at least pretty.  The improvements to notifications are stellar.

Any noticeable improvements in battery life (or anything else that would get me to flash it instead of waiting for the OTA update to hit my Nexus 5)?

  16. During the notes for the Oregon Raw, Dave mentioned that there was a big issue in the early 90s where Howard Finkel turned in a blood sample for Hogan in Oregon when they were blood testing and it tested positive for AIDs. I've googled this a bit but couldn't find anything substantial, anybody have the story on this?

No, nobody tested positive, but that Hogan had someone take the test for him and then lost so much weight led to rumors that he had AIDS.
