  1. They blew it by not calling interference.

    However...

The review was correct. It's black and white - if a review shows the defender didn't touch the bag AND the runner also didn't, the runner is safe. That's right in the rules.

But it was interference before that.

The problem with them calling interference there is that they generally never call interference in that situation. It's a way of calling the game that has been so burned into the heads of the umps that them calling interference there would have been more conspicuous.

  2. Well if was called right, Utley would have been out at second. Also, butterfly effect and what not, without the slide and the delay, there's no way of knowing what happens after that.

Actually, the play was called right. Keith Law and a bunch of BP guys online have been taking shit from fans over defending the umps. But, if you look at the rulebook the call they made was the right call based on the rules that are in place for when the Utley "not touching the bag" scenario played out.

  3. They were going to lose, and it's only game one. It sucks sure, but Lackey pitched great and we didn't capitalize on the few mistakes he did make. I have a lot of confidence in Hendricks tomorrow actually, and in the resiliency of this team as a whole.

  4.

Would also throw out the not great medical care at the game site compared to college and NFL

Depends on the school I guess, but at the games in the district I serve the first line is the team trainer and we always have at the minimum one ALS ambulance at the game. Now, if you're gonna say that's a substandard level of care then I hope you don't ever bother calling 911 for anything.

  5. And now the Kane thing has been shown to be a hoax pulled by the accuser's mom. Good grief.

Thought they showed the kit was a hoax, not the rape charges? Regardless, there's nothing for the accused to do now even if the rape was legit. And the backlash against female reporters covering this case has shown again the seedy underbelly of the male sports fan.

  6. This last episode is awesome but I still feel like the slow burn people have been talking about has been more implied than shown. It feels like we went from "hey something weird is going on lets go to the desert and wait it out" to the army showing up and shutting the neighborhood down all in one episode and now we're already at "everyone is dead". That seems really quick I would have loved to seen a slower burn but I just didn't think it was all that slow. The Army showing up would have been a good season finale I think.

More things that didn't make sense. I haven't been in school in a very long time 15 years I guess. Would she really be able to get hardcore pain meds at a school like that? Also at that point weren't they still in the "hey we don't know whats going on something weird is going on lets go wait it out" mode? If so how does that warrant breaking into a high school and stealing the pain meds? It seems like to do that you would have to pretty much accept that it was the very last resort of getting help.

Also unless I misunderstood why are they going to the desert? Isn't that the last place you would want to go in a situation like this? As far as very little if any shelter, very little if any water, very little if any available food. Aren't these the basics you want when looking for a safe house of sorts in a survival situation? Access to food, shelter and water. I get that there aren't many people out there but it seems like it wouldn't matter much when instead of being killed by zombies you die because you're in the desert with limited rations.

I did actually enjoy this episode more than any of the others. Did we ever get to see her boyfriend turn into a zombie? She's over there nursing him back to health, she leaves, never goes back and I guess as best as I know we never got a follow up to that. I know he's a zombie or dead or whatever just seems like we'd get a throwaway scene of that. I was pretty certain the flashes were gunfire from the very start of the episode so when its the big reveal at the end of the episode I was just kind of like "oh ok".

Still though its finally getting interesting even if none of the characters are connecting at all so far. With The Walking Dead I was pretty into Shane and Rick's characters from their first conversation in the car. For whatever reason they felt more "real". The dad/boyfriend seems very rigid to me and nobody seems "real" to me. Hopefully we start to see more character development now that they have already killed off the entire city within a few episodes.

    To answer a few points,

My wife subs at a middle school sometimes, and even at that level she says that they have all kinds of shit they take from the kids in an easy to access lockup. Pain meds, narcotics, all kinds of stuff. The police consider the problem taken care of once the school confiscates it so removing it isn't a priority. As for her grabbing the drugs, I've seen parents do far worse and stupider things for their junkie kids.

The going to the desert thing kind of depends on what survivalist you are. There are some who would agree with you. There are others who would advocate getting to the desert, goal being to get out of the city and away from people as quickly as possible.

And I thought it was pretty clear that the flashing light early in the show was an SOS. Same thing when we see it again in the middle of the show. Couple that with Madison's venture into the DZ and the implication, to my wife and I at least, was that the soldiers are shooting everything regardless of infected/zombie/clean, and that they either got to that building in a routine sweep, noticed the SOS themselves, or acted upon the words of Travis even though they don't want him to know that.

  7. People are inherently very stupid, I encounter them every day whether it be on the ambulance or the fire engine. I think the people who have some level of intelligence underestimate how even those we consider smart tend to react to bad situations with the least bit of logic shown. But, more to the point, this show hasn't been about the characters, at least not yet. It's about the setting, the tone, and building the destruction of a world.

That's why I pretty much love this show so far. It's willing to take its time to set things up and establish a well thought out and thorough world. But, at the same time the episodes have stuff happening all the time as the wheels are perpetually in motion. I know my wife loves the show because she finds it legitimately scary. I'm not one to find anything film/TV scary, so I can't really comment. But she says it's the fact that no one knows what is happening that makes it scarier to her than TWD. Those characters have adapted, they understand their world. These characters don't, and that adds tension to the situations they find themselves in and the decisions they make.

Add all of that up and you have one heck of a show that I enjoy watching very much.

  8. Unabashed fan of the Patriots. It was thanks to my Uncle's tape of the 85 Super Bowl that I became a fan. Any team getting trounced that badly was a team that needed some fans is what my juvenile mind thought. Suffered through lots of years of awfulness and mediocrity. But, it's led to the last 15 years or so, and a team that gives zero fucks what anyone else thinks of them and flaunts that attitude. I love all of it.

  9. No offense to any non traditional schools, ie Boise or TCU, but I won't believe they can win a title until they do. Rank them where they deserve it, but its hard to take them too seriously. This is coming from someone from Idaho/Utah, though I went to ISU, so fuck BSU. . .

They will never be allowed to be in a position to win a title, no matter how many times they beat big name teams, go undefeated, etc.

  10. Wife and I have greatly enjoyed the first two eps. Being in the TWD universe helps because I am a sucker for such things. But, I love the way they are showing society crumbling and the reactions to said crumbling. The characters all fit their roles pretty well, and I'm genuinely interested in how will survive and where the show will end up.

  11. I was upset to see Lake go, though I understand the reasons why. He's put a lot of work in the past offseason and this season in the minors and has been turning the corner. His walk rate is up, K rate is down, he's showing more power, and displaying a good glove. I think the O's will have themselves a good everyday MLBer if they give him a shot.

Not a big fan of the tournament booking. Dragon had the chance to do something special, and instead he trotted out familiar match-ups from other promotions. Tournament will probably still be good, but the chances of it being great are lessened by how well worn the majority of the first round matches are.

Which ones?  All I can think of are Drago vs. Pentagón Jr. which may have happened in LU but I can't remember, and Hero/Thatcher & Gulak/End which happened in Evolve over Mania weekend.  Besides, does it matter?  Hero vs Thatcher at PWG will be far different from their Evolve match, for example.

It absolutely does matter when it comes to my level of excitement for the card. Thatcher and Hero have wrestled twice already this year, both of which were very similar. They'll wrestle pretty much the same match at Reseda, and while it will probably be great I've already seen it twice.

The Papelbon trade is odd. The Nats have a guy in Storen who has proven himself to be a reliable and pretty darn great closer. By all means get bullpen depth, but bringing in Papelbon with a clause in the trade that he has to be closer seems borderline regressive.

Is there any they can get away with having him "close" in the 8th inning, ala the way WCW got out of the Demon deal?

I think if you try that Papelbon starts tanking on purpose like he's done in Philly whenever his feelings were hurt.

  16. Have nothing but respect for ARam. He's been great everywhere he's gone, and was easily the best Cubs player during his tenure here, solidifying a position that always gave us trouble. Not HoF worthy, but definitely a Hall of Pretty Damn Great guy.

  17. I'm curious, after reading a few entries here, what audience you're wanting?

Do you mean as in people submitting entries? Or as in people reading my stuff?

The answer to the first is any audience really, any submissions are okay with me.

If you mean the second my answer is I don't have a specific audience in mind. I mainly just write for myself, and if others get some kick out of it then that's cool too.

  18. I'm a bit old school in the sense that as much as I love reading the great work of Dean, Phil and the gang in the actual DVDVR reviews I still love the feeling of leafing through a wrestling magazine. There are a few good wrestling magazines still chugging along and they are all worth your time. I happen to write for one of them, The Tag Rope. It really is a magazine worth checking out. Oli Sandler provides high quality photography, while Pedro Carvalho provides the best wrestling related art going as companion pieces for some of the articles. Pedro always provides a piece for my articles and with no shame I can say that without his art my articles wouldn't be anywhere near as good as they are. The Tag Rope offers long form thought provoking pieces about the world of wrestling. Interviews, match reviews, predictions, opinion pieces, and a lot of fun can be found within its pages.

There's currently an eBook collecting a handful of articles from the first four issues; and it also includes original art from Pedro and an original match review written by yours truly. The best thing about the eBook is that it's free. So head over to PayHip and download your free copy today. Otherwise we sell both digital and print copies of the magazine, released quarterly, that can be found in the link below.
