  1. Earth is gonna be up shit creek when Suzuki reverts to form and becomes the kaiju's leader instead of fighting them.

Is Suzuki the closest thing Japan the major Japan promotions have had to a lifelong heel?  Heel-face distinctions tend to be less important in most of the big promotions, but I can't think of the last time Suzuki wasn't portrayed as the anti-establishment heel.

Lol, if he was in the WWE, Vince would turn him babyface in six months.  Then have him act like an even bigger jerk.

  2. Hmmm.  Guess they're both from Ragnarok.

I actually did see Ragnarok a while back when it hit home video.  Guess I don't remember it that well.  Thought it was too jokey.  I don't really remember, but I probably checked my email and surfed the internet while I watched.  I think I kinda lost interest fairly early.

Caught the last 20 min of Civil War on cable a couple nights ago.  The first scene I saw was

    Spoiler

Cap and Iron Man watching Bucky kill Howard and Maria Stark via security cam footage

Holy shit.  I'd probably hate that retcon if they did it in the comics (is it in the comics?) but, for some reason, that's made me more interested in the movie.  Never seen Civil War, so I'll probably rent it this week.

Cheaper than the $400 ish I think I paid for my Japanese DC. :)

One of the advantages of retro gaming.  I paid $60 for an import Dreamcast earlier this week (refurbished from an eBay seller i trust).  For the most part, consoles for the games I'm interested in - even import consoles - can be had fairly cheaply.

  4. The new season is going to air sometime before the end of the year, isn't it?  Google doesn't turn up a start date.

I'm not much of a Who fan, but new show runner + Jodie Whittaker & Bradley Walsh has my attention.  Really hate her outfit, though.  Do fans generally like it?

I've always said that the biggest issue with Roman's push is that they want him to overcome the obstacles when in all reality, he should be the obstacle. He's a giant Samoan dude who wrecks people. He shouldn't be fighting from underneath all the time unless he's going up against a guy like Braun.

Well, there's also the issue of Vince gearing the booking around Roman beating Brock at WM and finally having his (Roman's) WrestleMania moment - and then booking Roman to lose to Brock at WM and a couple other times near WM.

"You can have your WM moment next year, pal.  The fans will still be there for you."

They've chosen some really odd moments to pull back on Roman's push.

And there’s also the pro wrestling end of all this.

From the pro wrestling side, there is a lot of maneuvering going on regarding what is next for Lesnar and the Universal title.

Lesnar is being advertised on the Raw after SummerSlam at the Barclays Center, as the key player on that card. Logically one would infer that Lesnar’s return would be at SummerSlam, but that has not been confirmed.

Logically, the Bobby Lashley vs. Roman Reigns match is for the winner to face Lesnar, yet, that also has never been said, and would add to the interest in the match this coming weekend if it was announced that way.

With Lesnar being all over the sports world for the angle with Cormier, it was shocking that the angle, nor Lesnar at all, were mentioned on the 7/9 Raw show. That was, as everything is, a directive straight from Vince McMahon.

It appears McMahon is adamant in creating the idea that Lesnar has walked out, is going to UFC, turned his back on the WWE fans, and isn’t coming back to drop the title and holding up the belt. The idea would seem to be to create a storyline that gets Reigns cheered at the Barclays Center. This storyline has, in fact, gotten Lesnar more hate, but also made him less over. Perhaps being big in UFC plans and in the mainstream news again will reverse that a little. It also hasn’t gotten Reigns cheered. But everything that is taking place as far as the pro wrestling end is being dictated by McMahon, and not Lesnar, who is under contract at least through the end of August.

From the outside, it appeared the idea to not mention Lesnar, his angle with Cormier, and that Reigns and Lashley are fighting to take his title, on the show is not taking advantage of something hot in the real world.

At the production meeting before Raw, McMahon told everyone that the show in Boston is to focus completely on building Extreme Rules, a show Lesnar isn’t on, so his name wasn’t to be mentioned. Reigns, in a promo late in the show, went in a direction where his name should have been mentioned, and then didn’t.

McMahon said that they will start talking about Lesnar “When he’s being offered to our audience and we can capitalize on it.”

This angle would have gotten over like gangbusters 35 years ago.  In Memphis.

Now, it only works if your fanbase is kinda dumb.

  7. Yeah, I just bought an import PS2.  One of the cool metallic models Sony released in Japan to celebrate the PS2 selling 50 million units (total, not in Japan alone).  I probably am not going out to buy PAL consoles too, so I'll still have to softmod to play PAL exclusives and there will be a few games out there with English patches (Fire Pro R, for example), but, as much as possible, I'm going to get away from console mods, burned DVDs, ISO files, the whole thing.  Shrug.  I can afford it and I kinda prefer trying to keep things as "original equipment" as possible.

Lol, I'm still tempted to just keep using a boot disc for the Dreamcast.  Dreamcast made it very easy to play imports if you had a Gameshark disc or something similar and you could still play the original, store-bought disc - without having to mod your case or stick a piece of tape on the inside of the disc tray like we used to do with PS2.  Although.... I can get a used Japanese Dreamcast for about $50-$60.  The only reason not do that is that I don't really like the looks of any of the Japanese Dreamcast consoles.  Easier decision with PSOne and 2 where Sony released a lot of console variants and most of them looked cool.

  8. Anyone here own any import gaming consoles?  I've modded consoles before, but I'm kinda wanting to pick up at least a couple import consoles, at least for systems I have/want a large import collection.  I'm close to buying a limited edition PS2 J-NTSC console an a Japanese Dreamcast probably wouldn't be far behind.  Only reason I'm hesitating is the power supply issues.  Some websites say I can plug a Japanese gaming console directly into an outlet.  Other sites say I need a stepdown transformer.  Voltage is different in the US than Japan, but not hugely.  110 volts to 100.

Anyone here own/owned import consoles?  Did you use a stepdown transformer or something similar?

Personally, I'm in the "take whatever" camp, since a lot of lines about what is/is not "okay" are arbitrary and often moralistic. Why is lasix okay but not blood spinning? Etc...

Exactly.  I know a lot of national class runners and cyclists (and a few world-class).   I know guys who take every legal supplement known to man, sleep in oxygen tents to simulate the effects of living at high altitude, practically mainline caffeine before races because they think it might give them an advantage, try over-the-counter medicines for ailments they don't have because they think it might give them an advantage, etc.  Used to be in contact with a national-class swimmer who took over 100 pills a day - over 30 different meds and supplements, all completely legal.  It's a fairly arbitrary line to decide that all the stuff he/she was on is in the spirit of competition, but a PED is not.

No matter where you draw the line, someone's going to take a lot of meds and do some wacky stuff that will take them right up to the line without going over.  And the reasons people do this stuff aren't always cut-and-dried.  Even if it was, taking PEDs to run or cycle faster, or build muscle to hit a baseball farther is pretty low on the list of crimes against humanity.  I've known people who took something illegal or otherwise artificially enhanced performance and they weren't bad people.

If Lance Armstrong is a bad person, it's more likely because he's kind of an arrogant jerk more than what he did to compete in bike races.

  10. Until last year, the only games I'd paid more than $60 for were Fire Pro Returns and King of Colosseum II.  Probably paid about $80-$90 for those.  Though there was also some other costs to figure in.  When I bought Fire Pro, I bought the flip-top lid and Swap Magic software.  Soured on that method after about a month, so before i bought KOC ii, I bought a modded PS2 from a website.  And then the dude was arrested by the FBI a few weeks later, which made me paranoid they'd be coming after his customers at some point.

I've gotten into retro gaming in a big way the past year or so, both from the standpoint of a player and a collector.  I'm a a huge fan of the sixth generation (PS2, Xbox, GameCube, Dreamcast).  I'm kinda picky about getting a fairly clean disc and the box, manual, etc.  It's hard to find games with boxes, manuals, inserts, etc. for earlier consoles - and when you do, the boxes and the like usually aren't in great shape - but you can get pretty much any game from 2000 on in mint condition, with box, art, manual, ads, etc.  It's just a matter of being willing to pay for it.  As much as possible, I buy "sealed" games (though i think many of those were probably resealed, but that's fine if the contents look newish).  If I'm buying "like new" or "very good", I've either looked at the discs and what-not myself, or it's from an eBay seller I deal with regularly and trust.

Haven't paid more than $100 too much lately.  Have been paying $80-$99 quite regularly.  There are only a handful of PS2/GC/Xbox games on my (lengthy) search list that I'll probably need to go over $100 for.

Dreamcast worries me a little.  Really getting to like the system, really surprised the homebrew scene still seems lively.  Due to scarcity, Dreamcast games are really expensive.  Like badly beaten up games are $50-$70 on eBay and the really nice condition stuff goes for $130-$300 (or more).  There are a few games on my list I'll probably be able to grab for $30-$40, but not many.  Seems like most every game I price is nuts expensive.  I think there are about 70 games on my Dreamcast search list right now.  Won't surprise me too much if it does't cost me at least $7,000 to acquire nice copies of all 70.

For whoever mentioned Steel Battalion, a nice copy cost me $260.  Game was opened but not scratched, controller was the first one they made (there are two variations, button color is different).  I think the market for those is something like $250-$300 or more for game and controller.  I actually was pleased to only spend $260.  I was thinking it was going to cost me at least $300 + shipping,

So far, most I've spent for PS2 game is $190.  Like I said, I'm imagining having to spend a lot more than that for a couple of the really rare Dreamcast games.

  11. Out of curiosity, what's the most people have ever paid for a game.

I seem to be throwing down increasingly large amounts for retro games, in part because I want clean copies so I buy "sealed" (lol, more like re-sealed) copies or "like new" games from a few eBay sellers I trust and one of the local retro stores.  Finding out that Dreamcast games tend to be very expensive due to low print runs.

Anyway, paid a few hundred last night for a rare factory sealed PS2 game and am curious what the most others have paid is.

My "record" at the moment, is $260.

  12. So in today's round of "I am idiot", you find plenty of discussion of Bill Watts' racist remarks if you spend five minutes with Google.  Obviously, I never did that.  My bad,  I was really unaware of this stuff.

I feel particularly dumb for assuming that, since he consistently pushed black wrestlers, he was trying to make some sort of point about equality.  That's a hollow argument and I should know better.  Mea culpa.

I feel kinda disillusioned right now,  I hope there are no other big reveals this weekend.  I couldn't take it if I found out that Ric Flair was a womanizing alcoholic who's bad with money or something equally ridiculous.

  13. Anyone familiar with  a PS import fighter called the Rumble Fish?  It looks kinda interesting, but I can't find much on it and I already own a lot of Saturn/Dreamcast/PS2 fighters  - most of which are probably better.

Spent a half hour trying to google the game and still haven' learned much.  Only review I could find on the web was a user review by a dud who sounded kinda dim.  I'd like to see a couple reviews before  I go to the trouble of importing (I don't emulate/download/etc.  I'm thinking of buying a physical copy of the game off eBay).
