Portland showcases long matches with plenty of mat wrestling, blood and storylines with Buddy Rose leading the way. Puerto Rico is like the Memphis of the Caribbean with tons of blood, angles and more blood. Once I reach my quota for the sets, I will be shipping them out!

Matt D asked me if I could start doing this. I'm not the most qualified to give lucha history lessons as there are plenty of people who know more about it than me, but I'll try my best. Feel free to suggest any corrections or suggestions.

Satoru Sayama y Gran Hamada vs. Perro Aguayo y Baby Face (4/13/80)

Gran Hamada (green trunks) was one of the first New Japan trainees and came from a strong judo background, where he fought for one of the top universities in Japan and was a candidate for the 1972 Olympics. Due to his lack of size, he was sent to Mexico to train with the newly formed LLI promotion in 1975 and learn the lucha style. Despite having a hard time with everyday life, Hamada soon established himself in Mexico and by the time he returned to Japan in 1979 he already had a family in Mexico, which is why he split so much of his time between the two countries.

Hamada had a rivalry at the time with Perro Aguayo (white trunks), one of the biggest stars in lucha libre history. Aguayo is famous for his blading and for being arguably one of the greatest brawlers in lucha history, but Aguayo vs. Hamada was, for the most part, a title match feud. This tag match from the famous El Toreo bullring was sandwiched between a pair of title matches the men had. The first was a match for the UWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Championship, which Aguayo took from Hamada on 4/22/79. The second was a title defence of Hamada’s UWA World Light Heavyweight Championship on 5/25/80, which Aguayo also took from Hamada. They would go on to have an even fiercer rivalry for the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship, which would trade hands several times in both Mexico and Japan and their rivalry crossed promotions from UWA to New Japan to Shinma’s original UWF. Eventually, they would become tag partners in both Mexico and Hamada’s UWF promotion.

Sayama (tights with a stripe) was on his own excursion at the time and had tasted his first success in Mexico by winning the NWA World Middleweight Championship from Ringo Mendoza on 9/9/79, a belt he lost to El Satanico on 3/28/80, a few weeks before this tag took place. He would move to England by the end of the year and have a run under a quasi-Bruce Lee gimmick as “Sammy Lee” before heading back to Japan to done the famous Tiger Mask gimmick.

Aguayo’s partner Babe Face (red and white trunks) was one of the original UWA wrestlers and a hated rudo also known for his bloody hair matches.

This was on the undercard of an Antonio Inoki vs. Tiger Jeet Singh match for the UWA World Heavyweight title, which is why it was filmed by a Japanese TV crew.

MATT'S REVIEW OF A BODYSLAM CHALLENGE

Blackwell begging off and backstepping onto his butt in the opening was great. I don't think anyone has taken punches in the history of wrestling quite like Jerry. The complete 360 on the groggy missed punch is AWESOME. There's around five minutes of Blackwell just eating offense and it's great. I actually think Gene is really on top of his game announcing too. Blackwell is a great topic of discussion for him. The dramatic wobble after Blackwell catches Bravo on the crossbody is pure Blackwell.

I love Blackwell's diving headbutt. Then the arm work begins (which makes total sense given this is a bodyslam challenge match). Blackwell does a pretty amazing job with it, including the two (different angled) killer leg drops onto the arm. They do a good job in general here, both having Bravo get back up and try to fight out often (the mat kicking at the start of part 2 is especially good) and having Blackwell switch up just what he's doing so as to keep the crowd in it. Blackwell calmly lounging as he scissors the arm is A+ stuff. And then he keeps the scissor on as he goes for the pin. And THEN he yells at Gene. And then Bravo powers over and Blackwell pulls the hair and stooges. The whole segment is great. And after another hope spot, he follows it up with a knee drop onto a hammerlock. Geez. Great Bridge by Bravo for ANOTHER hope spot, only to get quashed by a hair pull and the BOTTOM ROPE SPLASH onto the arm! Another hope bit with Bravo grabbing the jaw and rolling out, but Blackwell's right there to smash the arm on the apron. Super focused wrestling.

Blackwell walks around taunting the crowd and Bravo rolls to the center of the ring, selling the arm like it was no longer attached. Just a dead, limp thing. Then comes the one-armed comeback and super momentum Luger-Yokozuna one-armed slam for the finish. Bravo's great here with his left arm still hanging limp as he celebrates. And Blackwell comes in with the check in his mouth(!) to maul Bravo leading to the babyfaces charging in and the Stretcher job while Blackwell takes the house mic and taunts and then looms watching just makes everything all the more resonant.

Yeah, I loved this, and I think you guys should watch it, no question. Were this on the set, I think it would have been around #5 for me for disc 1, if not higher. Was it considered?

1980

Lord Alfred Hayes vs. Bobby Heenan (1/13/80)
Hayes was the Manager of Super Destroyer Mark II for a few years in the AWA, notably feuding with Billy Robinson. A few weeks after SD II lost a TV match against the unheralded-in-the-AWA Dino Bravo (and being forced to unmask due to the loss), he came to the ring for a squash and took the mic and fired Hayes. He then introduced his new manager…Bobby Heenan. This set the Hayes-Heenan feud in motion, which included this singles match and several tag matches.

Greg Gagne vs. Super Destroyer Mark II (5/1/80)
The Gagnes had a continuing feud with the Heenan family and this was an extension of that feud, with SD II being managed by Bobby Heenan at the time.

Verne Gagne vs. Nick Bockwinkel (7/18/80)
After two years of chasing Verne, Bockwinkel finally won the title in November of 1975 due to interference by Bobby Duncum and some questionable refereeing from Paul Perschmann (aka Playboy Buddy Rose). Heenan and Bockwinkel had avoided Gagne as much as possible (there is a notable title match between the two from 2/10/79 in Chicago that is available on one of the Japan Classics discs) until this Chicago match, held outdoors at Comiskey Park.

Greg Gagne & Super Destroyer Mark II vs. Nick Bockwinkel & Bobby Heenan (10/3/80)
SD II and the Heenan family had a falling out at some point after April of 1980, and SD II turned to teaming with Greg Gagne and others in a quest for revenge. Note the date of the match here, as this was one of SD II’s last AWA appearances as he had begun in the WWF at this point and engaged in a series of title matches with Bob Backlund at MSG beginning that same month.
