1001 MATCHES: Fuerza Guerrera
(by PHIL RIPPA)
The idea to feature Fuerza Guerrera came to me after seeing that the recent match against Octagon got posted. I have always loved Fuerza and so far we had only featured one of this matches. So here are 10 to give you a taste of his greatness. Figure I can do this a few more times with some other folks too.
226) FUERZA GUERRERA/LOBO RUBIO vs. ATLANTIS/EL HIJO DEL SANTO (11/25/83)
Super fun match that has the historical significance of being Santo’s Arena Mexico debut. Yes, Santo, Fuerza and Atlantis were once young. (Rubio was most certainly not young.) Can be found on the DVDVR 80s Lucha set, at least until I stop being lazy and upload it.
“I loved this match because everyone did their job perfectly. The rudos were just there to be bump machines and always be in the right position so the tecncios could shine. Too many rudos these days don’t grasp that concept and just want to get their own shit in before worrying about making their opponents look great.

“Fuerza has to be one of the most reliable workers of all time.”

“The other really interesting thing about this match is that it’s an opportunity to see three all time greats before they were fully formed. They are so graceful and quick and you get to see them do tons of stuff that got dropped from their routines over the years. Atlantis obviously dropped most of the high flying spots for example. At the same time some of the things they are known for are already present like how Fuerza already throws a great right hand and doesn’t hesitate to talk shit.”

227) FUERZA GUERRERA vs. NEGRO CASAS (9/20/86 – WWA World Welterweight Championship????)
Again – seeing this match up 30 years ago is a trip. Dataincash’s Youtube channel is the bee’s knees. I am kinda sorta guessing that the title at the WWA World Welterweight Championship is the belt at the end but I am tired and I am cold and their are wolves after me so I am not pestering the lucha sources. Watch this then watch all the other times they wrestle.

228) FUERZA GUERRERA vs. EL HIJO DEL SANTO (6/7/90 – UWA World Welterweight Championship)
https://youtu.be/vuYqJqyo8q4
I love me some Hamada UWF if for no other reason that it allowed me to see some of my lucha faves working in Japan. Case in point – Fuerza Guerrerra and El Hijo del Santo squaring off in Korakuen Hall

229) FUERZA GUERRERA vs. OCTAGON (2/1/91)
An Octagon/Fuerza match in 2016 inspired this theme. Here the long time rivals have an absolute war in 1991. The sketchy screen cap alone should sell you. Fuerza tying Octagon’s mask to the ropes will never not be awesome. I would bitch about it not getting a single MOTY vote in the WON voting but no lucha match got a vote in 1991 because y’all suck. BTW – 11/3/91 mentioned on the video appears to re-air date. (Source)

230) FUERZA GUERRERA vs. GALLO TAPADO (3/8/91 – Mask vs. Mask Match)
Historical importance alert – Fuerza coming for the mask of his maestro Gallo Tapado.

231) FUERZA GUERRERA vs. MISTERIOSO (12/6/91 – NWA WORLD WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP)
Here is Fuerza hooking it up with the underrated and often forgotten Misterioso.

232) FUERZA & JUVENTUD GUERRERA vs. REY MYSTERIO JR. & SR (02/19/95 – WWA Parejas Title vs. Mexican Parejas Title)
Mainly adding this for the whole Guerreras vs. “Mysterios” thing. Rey and Juventud in this match are barely older and barely taller than my son is. Fuerza is Fuerza (ie: awesome). Rey Sr is Rey Sr (ie: not awesome).

233) FUERZA GUERRERA/BLUE PANTHER/PSICOSIS/PENTAGON vs. EL HIJO DEL SANTO/LA PARKA/REY MISTERIO JR/OCTAGON – AAA TRIPLEMANIA III-B (6/18/95)
I want you to re-read the participants in this match. Shouldn’t take too much to figure out why I picked it. Got 4 1/2 stars from Meltzer… and no votes for MOTY. Because why bother voting for it when you can just vote for Rey and Psicosis in ECW and fuck Mexico.

234) FUERZA GUERRERA vs. JUVENTUD GUERRERA – AAA (07/15/07 Taped, 07/29/07 Aired – Street Fight)
Speaking of ECW – this is right up Paul Heyman’s booking alley. Sports Entertaining all over the place – constant interference from Octagon and Sangre Chicana (though it does some what work in the context of the match), blood, backstage brawling so much ref nonsense. Not technically good per se but definitely a spectacle. And the whole Father vs. Son thing.

235) FUERZA GUERRERA vs. GOLDEN MAGIC – IWRG (06/11/14 Taped, 6/15/14 Aired – IWRG Intercontinental Welterweight Championship)
In the year of our Lord, 2014, Fuerza Guerrera decides that Negro Casas isn’t the only 60+ year old luchadore who can still have great matches. Fuerza needs to keep trying to beat the hideous outfit off of Golden Magic.
