Rampage - 5/27/2022

Recommended Posts

Sydal vs Dragon was fantastic. The ending sequence where Bryan just said, ok I've had enough of this shit was brutal! Sydal has a wonderful showing, though.

While certainly not 100% Wholesome, that still the most wholesome occasion in which you are likely to hear the phrase "Scissor me, Daddy Ass!" Oh, and Dante Martin was still able to avenge his previous loss to Caster!

Young Bucks brought in Gangrel and I was able to briefly see Taylor Rust again. Of course, the had to be dicks about it, but at least Brandon got to pay the price for it! They sure are attempting to make the most out of this Hardys reunion, and why the hell not?

So, the mixed trios match as well as Darby vs O'Reilly added to the PPV? Is this going to be 5 hours or are some of the matches going to be much shorter this time around? I won't mind, I'll probably watch the PPV in 5 segments over the course of a week, anyway! Last Buy In had three matches, but now there's only one and the rest are crammed into the PPV proper? Your prerogative, I guess?

Ruby had to take advantage of the inside info Velvet gave her, after all! Very intense main event. Man, predicting the winner of Women's Owen will be tough! I want them both to lose. Ruby losing to Britt again on PPV makes about as much sense as Anna Jay losing again to Jade, but I'd assume that's what I'm looking at, here.

I could have gone my whole life without seeing Brandon Cutler in a thong...

Matt Sydal is quickly becoming one of AEW's best 6th men along with Dustin and Smart Mark. Always adding to any program he finds himself in.

Loved the stiffness of the main especially the two hoss sized lariats. really like how they are leaning into the whole angle that Strat is bigger and stronger than the rest of the women. Could she be the one to take the TBS title off Jade?

I wasn’t expecting such a banger from Sydal-Danielson, that was some good shit pal.

Main event was awesome but man I was SO disappointed when Statlander lost and I’m glad the whole crowd felt the same way, that was some bullshit. Match was great but Ruby kept targeting the wrong arm that Stat has been selling the whole match and that annoyed me even more because she won.

LOL.

LMAO I missed this. Only thing he missed was having the bow legged walk and a real missed opportunity not having Cutler interfere with a flying rana.

Don't get me wrong, Ruby Soho brought it in that match and has been great lately, but Statlander really upped her game as well and has always been a favorite. I'd have ZERO issue with her giving Jade her first loss and taking the TBS belt.

SATURDAY REFLECTIONS:  Little things I love about Danielson-  dropping the knee on the head out of a headlock, driving Sydel's face into the mat in a Full Nelson,  forearms to the head when in the Lyger surf board.  Sydel should become the Ace of ROH, but he is getting ragdolled by Danielson.  ROH could be about wrestling and AEW could be about violence.  ROH could be like UWFi invading New Japan, but booked correctly.  Sydel selling on the half crab into the knee bar was pretty MASTERFUL.  What a great fucking match.  I didn't get that Brandon Cutler was assuming the role of Lita until I read reactions on the board.  He dresses so ZANY anyway, it got right past me.  Knowing that Jon Cruz is Serpentico now makes me wonder how me Serpentico-esque things he did.  You see the pain on his face from taking a beating so he needs the mask to cover up the fact that he will sacrifice his body for your PLEASURE.  Sad, really.  That segment was more effective than I realized yesterday.  The Ass Boys on the ramp are better than the Caster/Martin match.  Billy Gunn is FUCKING GREAT picking up Max and hugging him after the Top Con Hilo by Dante Martin to open the match.  This is so great. The psychology of the match is that Caster is grounding Martin by ruining his knee.  That's good storytelling, right there.  Neither of these guys are quite good enough to string together a bunch of good-looking moves yet- as we just saw a master class in that in the first match.  I guess that Martin didn't acknowledge the knee being worked on at all was why the finish seemed kinda rote, whereas his selling in the BCC match was really great.  I guess Max Caster isn't Bryan Danielson yet and can't bring the offense for Martin to react to.  Statlander should prolly turn full heel.  She has a great heel offense and a good babyface selling it could make matches like tonight more commonplace. The reason the match is so good is that Stat has effective power offense and Ruby Soho is good at taking it and selling it.  The heat is weird because Stat is a tweener and the crowd is behind her.  She should punch a puppy or something.   I don't know what it is about Rampage that makes the women's match better than Dynamite.  It was LIVE and the crowd was molten.  Ruby Soho has been pretty invisible the last couple of weeks and Stat has been an after thought.  The work gets it over and a hot crowd can react to the goodness.  Stat is Dynamite Kansai and Ruby Soho is Mayumi Ozaki.  Soho is all plucky trying to take out the shoulder.  The reason the crowd turned on the finisher is that Stat hits two GREAT finishers and Soho doesn;t have anything to answer it with.  Soho should have hit two Backdrop Drivers.

Not much to add that wasn’t already said.

Opener was so good, but that’s was to be expected.

I should have guessed when the Hardys called the Bucks “Hardys cosplayers” what was going to happen. It was uncanny at times.

Acclaimed are so over, and while Caster-Martin wasn’t a great match (Dante reverted to his weak strikes, he needs more BCC time) it was good to get Dante a win on TV.

Young love and Kaz segment was cringe. Please, for the love of Gotch, make this feud end Coach Tony.

Main event was excellent, Stat really woke everyone up when she hit that HUGE lariat after the first couple of minutes of feeling things out. During PiP, I’m fairly certain that Stat’s hanging vertical lasted 20-25 seconds. The segment Dean posted a tweet of was slick and brutal and I think everyone was justifiably pissed at the kick out there, especially after the pre-match promos. Ruby did a good job post-match reacting to what was happening and not just giving lines.

I think, for me at least and possibly others I dunno, is that Ruby has already been pushed to two marquee matches already.  She debuted with an immediate Casino Battle Royale win and a shot at Baker at Arthur Ashe, then the was pushed to the finals of the TNT title tournament.  Putting her in another championship and/or match for a major award (tm Christmas Story) is just more of the same and I don't really care to see it.

Guest Stefanie Without Stefanie

I only watched the promos before the main and the main itself.

I've never seen a crowd turn on someone as quickly as they did on Ruby. Wow.

But I also really like Kris Statlander, so... hey, whatever gets more people on board with her! GIVE STAT THE BELT.

Bryan Danielson sings!

This is everyone's reminder that the AEW carpool karaoke has dropped on Apple TV+ or whatever it's called (I think I nailed it). There's a point where they're doing Ruby Soho's theme where you can practically hear MJFs brain wondering in kayfabe if they did Punk's theme in the other car (they did).

I just watched the Ruby/MJF/Powerhouse part on YouTube and I absolutely recommend you guys go out of your way to watch it.

I loved Sydal-Danielson as much as anybody, but... I really wish they wouldn't have done that awful guy (Sydal) splayed on the top rope pretending to be unable to move while opponent (Danielson) comes off the top rope with a knee or some strike. Dammit Bryan! That has to be one of the most jarringly ridiculous spots in wrestling. Maybe with a little more time passed it'll just be another (ask no questions) irish whip?

Ruby and Statlander was also fantastic, and completely agree on the crowd turning on the pinfall win due to Statlander's two fantastic finishers followed by the flash pin. Terrific pre-match promo from Stat as well. Nice to see her bounce back on the stick.

It works a lot better in tag matches.
