Doesn't that seem kind of absurd though for a PPV event right? If people are purchasing your show, what does it matter what time the basketball game ends. The people aren't going to be buying the show at 9:45/10pm just for the main event.

That would make a 12 match card with only Hookhausen vs. Sterling/Neese as the only announced Buy-In match.

I would've said that Jade/Anna should be on the Buy-In, but I actually think O'Reilly/Darby would be an excellent pre show match. I mean just three years ago at the first DoN our pre-show matches were the Casino Battle Royal that Hangman won and Sabian/Sammy. It's okay to put some real star power on the preshow.

If the idea of the pre-show is to convince people on the fence and/or casuals to shell out money for the PPV, then something like Darby-O'Reilly would be a much better option than Hookhausen- Smart Abs.

It seems super absurd to even say out loud.

  1. I have no idea what sort of internal surveys they have on their viewer base. I assume you don't have @Mookieghanaon the payroll to not use his analytical skills to the utmost.
  2. Obviously the ratings in the last month have been impacted by the NBA to some degree, a degree of maybe 10%?
  3. He's very focused about the fact the show is in Vegas and has made decisions based on what other shows in Vegas have done.
  4. With all that said, it's absolutely absurd. It feels like Jim Ross reminding the viewers constantly that the NFL and college football are more important than WCW in the early 90s.

Present your card as 100% the most important thing in the world, or at least the sports/entertainment world, happening that day. If you really are going to stretch out a card a little for that reason, don't say it out loud. You shouldn't punish your most diehard/engaged/passionate/paying fans for a minority who care about something else. It's the age of cell phones. If someone wants to follow a game at the same time as your matches, they can do it.

Who knows? Maybe he's got money on the game or something?

Logically the only thing I can think of is maybe (and this is a reallllll stretch) with it being Vegas, lots of people gambling on the NBA playoffs and would rather watch than show up for a event they paid for? Like they made a 1.1 million gate. But it would look bad on TV if there are lots of holes in the audience because people chose to hang back and watch the gave vs using they ticket they bought?

I mean that's a big stretch. Especially in the day & age where you can just stream the game on your phone while at the event. But I really can't think of another reason to do this. Especially the people at home that can surely stream the game on their phone with the PPV on the TV. Idk seems like a very odd decision. And the more I think of it even that doesn't make sense because there would be holes in the crowd all night until the main event if that were the reason.

I'm stumped, weird choice man.

How many fans are going to be people who live in Vegas and are going because it's local, vs people who don't live in Vegas but are travelling in for the show?

I've heard of people doing this for boxing or UFC when they only care about the main event but never for a wrestling PPV where the cards tend to be more stacked top to bottom. Boxing especially used to have long boring undercards until your Mayweather or Tyson or whomever would go on last 3 hours into the PPV.

All that makes sense to me is that they’ve got data that shows a decent percentage of their PPV audience comes from the Boston and/or Miami markets, and they want to assure any of those fans who might be on the fence about buying DoN that they can safely watch both things and not miss out on the biggest match.

I’m betting on whatever games I can that night, and the options are super limited so I’m hoping there’s a game 7 for me to bet on. I also hope the show doesn’t get dragged on because of it. I’ll collect my winnings after the show.

It could be maybe trying to maximize social media attention by not overlapping with the basketball game, but even that doesn't make total sense. But it kind of reminds me of that time WWE put their PPV main event on first to avoid getting swallowed by one of the Trump-Clinton fiascos debates.

I actually think the tag is a a really good idea for the buy in. I know im fascinated with what the match actual ends being

Here's my hawt take: Game seven of a conference finals is a pretty big deal for a lot of sports fans. Taking that into consideration shows respect from AEW toward their larger fan base. There's something positive to be said for leaning that way as opposed to arrogantly insisting on some kind of "it's us or them, make your choice."

Although, yeah, it's a very good point that pro wrestling fans are going to care about the whole card and not just the main event championship match.

Especially with it being Memorial Day weekend, there may only be one big screen for the family and basketball most likely will win out.

Agreed. And if that is the case, they aren't spending $50 to get one match once the game is over. Right?

It's not so much being arrogant and saying it's us vs them. It's saying hey people willing to spend $50 and are really looking forward to this show... get ready to wait longer than you would have otherwise for the people that don't care as much as you do.

I guess it all boils down to perspective really. But the reality is it's not like they are going to put on dead air. We're getting a couple extra matches than we normally would just in case. And in the long run that can be a very good thing. As long as the crowd stays hyped, more workers getting a PPV payday is always a good thing.

Hasn't this been a major problem with just about all of their PPVs though? My interest in the last one died a death after the crowd sat on their hands following Punk/MJF.

If they get it on Bleacher Report, doesn't it have unlimited replays? They could watch the rest later.

Edit: For those with SmartTVs rather than traditional PPV.
