Good for him. I think that's the big difference between this purchase and like Crockett/UWF or Vince/WCW. Khan is a fan. He's got a respect and a fondness for ROH. I did think the main event match felt a little flat because it always seems obvious that Reynolds is going to take the fall, but man did everything afterward feel awesome. Taping Hangman to the ropes and then taunting him reminded me a lot of DX tying Austin up in the ropes before WM 14 where Austin looks completely rabid and is going to murder HBK and HHH if he gets loose. LOVED Hangman straight up headbutting Cole while taped up. That's what I want out of a babyface champion - someone who is just going to fight no matter what. The MJF and Punk segment was an all timer and yeah, this thing is the feud or story of the year. The neat thing is that you can have Punk go over in the rematch, have MJF blame Wardlow, dovetail that into a MJF/Spears vs Punk/Wardlow match, eventually break Punk off into something else because Wardlow and MJF can just be the next big feud. I'm SO looking forward to the day when MJF tries to stick it in Wardlow's face that he's not a contracted AEW wrestler, he's just a bodyguard, only for Wardlow to pull out an AEW contract and give us all a big dose of catharsis. That Casino Battle Royal was maybe the best one they've done, if only because it was kept simple and done in the Royal Rumble style. I was really hoping they'd have gone with a surprise finish by having Top Flight win the whole thing. Darius Martin looks like he's in tremendous shape and like everyone else who winds up on the shelf in AEW, he has somehow come back looking even better as a wrestler. Top Flight need to win the titles at some point this year. Something felt...off with the women's tag match. I can't put my finger on it, but it looked sloppy at times and seeing Rosa get the pin on Britt somehow made me less invested in their match on Sunday. TK is just the biggest dork. Bless him. My wife watched that opening segment with me and she was like, "is he ok? He seems very excitable..." And TK won't let his ego get in the way of building a second successful brand/promotion like Vince did with WCW. That goddamn Punk/MJF segment was sooooo great. But watching Tony’s enthusiasm made that segment special anyway. You could feel just how excited he was. I’ve never really followed ROH, but you can’t deny its influence on AEW and indie wrestling in the two decades since. Danielson/Daniels was a fun match. Good to see Daniels return, and tying it in to the ROH purchase added just a hint of intrigue. Well played. Casino Royal was largely just “there” and just seemed to go on forever. And did we abandon the card suits entrances? I thought that’s what identified something as a “Casino” match. The MJF/Punk segment was awesome. I hope it alleviated any fears that MJF was “too sympathetic” in his promo last week. It sure did for me. Women’s tag match never really clicked for me, which is surprising given the combatants. Rosa getting the pin on Britt makes me think her chances of winning on Sunday just dropped. Main event was fine. Cole isn’t my favorite wrestler. The other two were marks for fame, power, looking like "legit businessmen," feeding their own egos, or some other petty shit. Maybe MJF gets Smart Mark involved to look for ways to keep Wardlow out of AEW, until Wardlow powerbombs Sterling through the crust of the earth. Wardlow finally gets his hands on MJF. Maybe the rest of the Pinnacle guys don’t get involved bc they don’t want any of Wardlow. It’s glorious murder. And TK gets to go buy one of his favorite things. Who knows where this ends up in the long term. AEW is his baby. He is very meticulous about it and that's great. But I would love to see him hire a competent executive to have full reign over ROH. Sure have a working agreement where AEW guys can go down there for work. And ROH guys can get signed to AEW and move up. But a distinct separate promotion that Kahn himself doesn't actually have anything to do with day to day. Let a Regal or Christopher Daniels or Cody or someone have full autonomy. They would be the TK of ROH. Every decision from booking to production to what they serve at catering is all under their umbrella. And TK just gets monthly reports on their progress and numbers. Matt D Posted March 3, 2022 Share Posted March 3, 2022 Crockett bought Mid-South (a territory on life support due to talent raids, never finding the JYD replacement, but most especially (if you are to believe Watts) the economy crashing in its geographic area) for a bunch of reasons: First and foremost, the TV syndication network that they had set up. It allowed Crockett to clear a bunch of TV in a bunch of new areas at a time where Vince was fighting for him for spots. An expanded geographic area of towns that were once (recently) drawing. Given how well some things were still going in 87, it's not hard to think that success could be moved elsewhere with some effort. This area included the Superdome. Trademarks he never did much with and a tape library he never did anything with. Some real talent: Steve Williams, the Freebirds, Terry Taylor, Sting, Rick Steiner, Eddie Gilbert, Dark Journey (she got featured on main Crockett TV before any of the rest of them but the Freebirds basically). Taking out one competitor in the nation-wide market, especially without letting Vince get his TV, market space, or talent. It's tough to compare since we're not sure what Khan actually got yet. Tape library, trademarks,... production gear, sure. Mostly everyone was let out of their contracts and put on the market months ago. Is he tapped into Sinclair's syndication slots now? Who knows?
