A new film is considered so offensive that Vue cinemas have cancelled all scheduled screenings.

Those who had purchased tickets to see Dashcam, the new found-footage horror from Host director Rob Savage, were surprised when they realized screenings would no longer take place.

This was brought to the attention of Savage himself, who shared an email from a Vue employee received by one customer.

“Apparently @vuecinemas have canceled our screenings of DASHCAM because the movie is too offensive!” he wrote on Twitter, adding: “If that doesn’t make you want to watch this film, what will?”

In the email, Vue told the customer: “Thank you for your question regarding Dashcam. I have received feedback from our staffing screen and they have decided we won't be showing Dashcam at any of our venues due to the contents of the movie, which may offend our audiences.

“We at Vue believe in diversity and any movie which may offend audiences, we may decide to no longer show at the last second without notice. I'm sorry this is not the outcome you were looking for.”

In fairness, such a reaction was predicted following the film’s UK premiere at the London Film Festival in October 2021. After the screening, Dashcam was branded “one of horror’s most polarizing features in years”.

The film, shot on an iPhone, follows a musician (Annie Hardy) who, depressed by her pandemic lifestyle in Los Angeles, breaks quarantine to go to London to see her bandmate (Amar Chadha-Patel).

Starts this weekend, but I am on nights until the 15th.  Hopefully it will still be out on release by the time I am off of graveyard, provided that there is a theater near me brave enough to show it.

The fact that they said "Too offensive" and "We support diversity" does imply it might be super pro- some aspect of bigotry.

It is sad, but the pursuit of mental wellness is fertile ground for horror stories.  ALTER on YouTube has two animated shorts that are both creepy and heartbreaking.

Contretemps is about one woman's brave and daily struggle with her OCD:

and Mum's Sweater is all about the processing of grief:

Joe Bob had a fun lineup last night. Hellbender was solid weirdness. I think some people pegged it as a nobudget A24 style film - but it's feeling was more akin to the naval gaze/ mumble core movement of the mid 2000s. Like Kelly Reichardt's Old Joy but with a mom and daughter vomiting blood on each other. Definitely recommend.

Also got to rewatch The Monster Club. Which is incredibly weird, but it's immensely likeable because it seems completely unaware of any trends or the audience that they're targeting. It's like it exists in a world where Alien, Exorcist, and Halloween didn't just come out prior. Just in here doing its own thing, Like watching Night Gallery the movie, but with jokes about Stake Proof Vests and this song.

So Dashcam is certainly something.

Spoiler

The lead comes off as this wannabe edgy troll I thought but she's absolutely completely unlikable as a character who runs around forcing herself upon a bunch of "trying to live their lives normally" types of people

Think like if Partyboy from Jackass was mixed with Tom Green during his MTV show years, and throw in a bunch of edgelord antics meant to instigate confrontations, then the lead just laughs it off each time on some "Just chill bro! Just having a laugh!"

Pretty nice gore, not much of a story beyond "people on the run from some psychotic telekinetic maniac" and then it turns out all the telekinesis powers come from the maniac being possessed i think?

For bodily fluids, it's definitely just about every kind there is, so that may or may not be a deal breaker if you're on the fence

It's definitely got a few, maybe less than 3, nice action pieces that will have you jumping out of your seat, and it doesn't rely on jump scares so much as actual scares where the camera is then dropped so just as you get FRIGHTENED ? the camera hits the floor and you hear lots of screaming and tearing before someone gets the camera again

The end credits were sort of a nice touch, definitely a first that I've run across. Wouldn't recommend unless you've got an iron stomach, there's a bit of practical fx that based on how it's shot will absolutely catch you off guard in a few sections

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities

Quote

Each episode of the series tells a different horror story “curated” by del Toro, who hosts the series and introduces each episode. Two of the episodes feature stories developed by del Toro, with different writers and directors taking on each episode. Notable directors and writers who will contribute to the series include Jennifer Kent (“The Babadook”), David Pryor (“The Empty Man”), Guillermo Navarro (“Narcos”), Keith Thomas (“Firestarter”), Panos Cosmatos (“Mandy”), Catherine Hardwicke (“Twilight”), Vincenzo Natali (“Cube”) and Ana Lily Amirpour (“A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night”).

The teaser shows a series of unsettling images, and reveals the cast list for the episodes. Alongside previously announced names like Ben Barnes, Essie Davis, Crispin Glover and Andrew Lincoln, the teaser confirms that Eric André, Sofia Boutella, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Rupert Grint, Kate Micucci and Charlyne Yi will star in episodes of the show’s first season. Other actors who were previously announced include F. Murray Abraham, Luke Roberts, Tim Blake Nelson, Hannah Galway, Glynn Turman, Elpidia Carrillo, Demetrius Grosse, Sebastian Roché, Peter Weller and David Hewlett.

She does TV work. She was on House of Cards for three years. She was just on that Lincoln Lawyer show but that was canceled after one season.

And let’s be honest Curt - you not seeing someone in something should not be used as a metric for anything.

EDIT - also forgot she was the Rock’s wife in that terrible Skyscraper movie

Yeah, I saw this trailer this morning and said to myself that I might have to check this out.

I was bummed to hear about Neve not coming back to Scream.  How can you not pay the final girl of the franchise what she's due?
