NHL 2021-22: PERIOD 1

Detroit is 2-0-1 after dominating Columbus. Yet another Wing was run from behind into the boards with no penalty. At least the 3rd already this year. Lucas Raymond was the victim and he was knocked out of the game shortly after scoring his first career goal. Tyler Bertuzzi scored again and leads the NHL with 5 goals. Mo Seider continues to look good while Ken Daniels tries to convince viewers he's a future 15-time Norris winner.

Detroit looks miles better this year with a lot of dead weight out of the lineup being replaced by young guys who can actually skate.

The Blues have scored the most goals in their first 4 games since the opening of the 1988 season when they were led by Bernie Federko and Brett Hull with Brian Sutter as rookie manager.

Of course, in 1988 they lost their 5th game 9-2 so we'll see how that goes Monday.

After a horrible loss to Montreal where they basically didn't show up, Detroit has had a terrific couple of games.  They beat Chicago 6-3 with rookie Lucas Raymond notching a hat trick.  Raymond is leading all rookies in goals (4) and points (8).  They followed that up with a nice comeback win in OT against Washington, 3-2.  They controlled much of the game and Dylan Larkin scored in OT to win it.  Detroit is now 4-2-1.  They look like a different team - not necessarily good but high energy without so much of the dead weight (Filppula, Nielsen, etc) of the last few years.  Adding Raymond (who is playing on the top line) and Mo Seider on defense (leading all rookies with 6 assists) and getting back (unvaccinated) Tyler Bertuzzi for US games after he missed basically all year last has also helped a ton.  If Jacob Vrana can come back, they'll really be fun to watch.

All of that is to say, there are reasons for optimism in Detroit again.  The Yzerplan is starting to show at least a modicum of results.

p.s. Bizarre play in the Washington game - after Larkin's stick was broken by a slash (no penalty), he skated up toward the Wings' bench to get a new stick.  Equipment manager Paul Boyer held out a new stick for him - and high-sticked a Washington player in the process (also no penalty).  I've seen thousands of hockey games over the years - I've never seen that!

p.p.s. The Washington game was also Anthony Mantha's first game against his old team.  It was a great example of why Detroit let him go.  He was invisible the entire game and his poor defensive coverage was directly responsible for one of Detroit's goals.  Put it this way - even with the guy Detroit got (Vrana) in that trade not playing, Detroit still came out ahead on the deal last night.

Sidney Crosby has tested positive for COVID

And apparently has symptoms.  He IS vaccinated.  The only (excluding those with fake certifications) unvaccinated player is Detroit's Tyler Bertuzzi.

Also note that Vegas has agreed to allow Eichel get the artificial disk replacement surgery (as early as this week)

Regarding timeline after the surgery

Quote

After his surgery, Eichel is expected to be cleared to skate in six weeks, but it is a minimum of three months until he will be cleared for contact. That timeline would put his return until at least after the All-Star break, and likely eliminates him from competing in the 2022 Olympics for Team USA.

Dylan Larkin looks to be out for Detroit for the second straight game for "personal reasons".  The Wings have been very quiet about it, no idea what's going on.  Hope it's nothing too serious.

I realize that the injury severely complicates things, but that Eichel trade does not look great. That pick is, at best, going to be in the mid20s. You're banking a lot on Krebs developing into something special and the most I've ever heard on him was that he grades out to a 2nd line center. I'm rooting for him, he played for the Winnipeg Ice and looked really good for the Canadian junior team. He's gonna get a lot more ice time in Buffalo, hopefully that balances out the drop off in potential linemates

Sasha Barkov is now tied for most goals in Florida's franchise history.

Humongous matchup on Saturday as 9-0-0 Carolina goes south and plays 9-0-1 Florida.

Of course, the game is not currently set for national TV.

Boy oh boy!   It looks like the Hurricanes suffered a Tropical Depression last night!

See now I hope you had one lined up for last night's game and can't use it

Detroit beats Edmonton 4-2 for their 3rd straight win - maybe their best win in 5 years. They led 3-0 at one point and had a 26-13 lead in shots. Also, this was a terrific game with tons of action and great saves.

And thank you Carolina for letting Alex Nedeljkovic walk. He's been outstanding other than his first game.

It really feels like Detroit has turned a corner. They're not a good team - their defensemen as a group are not NHL-caliber - but they CAN be many nights.

Amazing because of how low scoring this era is compared to the 80s and the fact that he's missed two full seasons worth of games due to lockouts and COVID.

He's also missed an incredibly low number of games due to injury, which is even more amazing given his physical style.

Detroit blew multiple leads last night to lose to Columbus 5-3.  Bad defense again contributed to the loss as Thomas Greiss stood on his head the entire game.  He's got a 3.20 GAA this year and has been great in every start except one in Montreal.

Lucas Raymond had 2 points to bring his total to 17 for the season.  He's averaging a point per game and has been way, way better than anybody could have hoped.  He's responsible in all zones and does something foreign to most Red Wings players - he shoots the puck.  He doesn't receive passes and fart around so it can be blocked or try to make impossible passes through four guys instead of shooting.  It's very refreshing.  Without checking, I believe the last Wings rookie to average a point per game was Sergei Fedorov 30 years ago.

Per the WSJ, the Penguins are in negotiations to sell the team to the Fenway Sports Group.

(Yes, they own the Red Sox.)

--

In other news, the Florida Panthers announced are willing to take the FSG owners' group to one (1) dinner at Legal Seafood in exchange for Sidney Crosby.
