All Out III - 9/5/2021

Dolfan in NYC

Me and you still going strong, @eikerir. When WWE/AEW/UFC goes out live in the early hours of the morning, you hope it's worth doing for that reason. It's great when it turns out that way and you feel even worse when it doesn't. Thankfully AEW All Out 2021 was in the former. So worth losing sleep over. Been up since 11:30pm Sunday night.

Need to watch Kenny Omega vs. Christian Cage back as I was a tad tiring. I thought the Rampage match was better.

Both were good but different matches, but prefer the first one. I think it benefited from being shorter/faster paced and being the first match on the first Rampage in front of a fresh rabid crowd as opposed to last night where they were tired after 4 hours of wrestling already.

This is ignoring the whole post match angle of course which is one of the hottest few minutes of any wrestling show ever.

Since Punk came back I’ve felt I’ve had to watch most of the shows live to not miss out on the buzz they create, it’s so fun immediately reading everyone’s reactions and sharing notes.

I did sleep tho for the past 4 hours or so at least, GO TO SLEEP.

I'd agree with all that. Omega/Cage I also had memorable finish with the Killswitch on the open chair. Kudos to how Omega took it.

I'm going to when this goes through. Cool reacting and talking with y'all. So great when a show delivers on its promise and even exceeds lofty expectations. Way to treat the paying consumers right, AEW.

I did like how Punk was very obviously calling it in the ring. Kept going back to the chinlock so he could tuck his mouth behind Darby's head and tell him what the next few spots were.

Mikey Rukus got to do live entrance music! (He was the English-speaking rapper on the Lucha Bros entrance).

Rebel tried to do her old TNA entrance (where she'd do a split on the bottom rope) and it went wrong because the ring was full of people moving around.

That might have been the shortest Battle Royal I've even seen. Even a short Battle Royal is like 45 minutes minimum, that was only like 22-ish. Tough break for Skye Blue, being a huge babyface coming out and then being eliminated first, in seconds. They should definitely bring her to Cincinatti (if they aren't going to sign her right away, at least give her a shot outside of Illinois, see how she gets over without a home crowd).

I can see Bry-Dan wanting to work Dark/Elevation every week, against the Angelicos and Yutas of the roster. Like, he already said he wanted to work Daniel Garcia. Or he might even just want to wrestle the top unsigned guy in whatever city they happen to be in. Danielson vs Moriarty, Danielson vs Tre LaMar, I can see him wanting to do that.

KENTA watching the show:

Make it a thing for him to come back for.

He should go after both guys and, if they want to acknowledge his Bullet Club history, have him align with (but not totally trust) The Elite in the upcoming AEW civil war.

When Kenta challenged Moxley for the IWGP US title, he also hesitantly teamed with Kenny to take on Moxley and Lance Archer.

Not much to add apart from echoing much of what's been said. Happy Miro didn't drop the strap just yet, Punk v Darby was a really solid return and I'm glad for the Lucha Bros. I want to see Fenix going gonzo in a feud against FTR.

I like that Punk calls his matches in ring, even if he's not good at all at hiding it. Punk has always had a since of old school in the way he worked like he wanted to make, Harley and Funk and people from the 70s and 80’s proud. Now he's actually saying he wants to be what Funk was to ECW. I know CM Punk was very broken down before leaving wrestling but he was running hard for 15 years and only off the road when recovering from serious injuries but eve through all that he's probably still less broken down than Funk during his ECW run because of stepping away physically and mentally for 7 years.

Punk has never been the smoothest as far as execution but he's one of those guys that it doesn't bother me that he isn't.

Bryan too him being out all that time and then working that pandemic schedule I believe helped him age alot less career wise. It really irked me when everyone was making a big deal about WWE wanting to recruit people below a certain age. I don't believe mid to late 30s and even mid 40s is to old for alot of talent today because nobody is working 230 plus days alot of guys aren't on performance enhancement drugs as much or party as hard.

Punk has a few Grey hairs but that plays into his grizzled veteran look. Look at Dustin Rhodes.

AEW had a ton of talent, and they are still bringing in recently released WWE talent but I think between them working with other promotions like GCW, IMPACT! and NWA, they are doing alot better in that situation than anyone expects and they have about 3 different shows of fresh weekly programing that are paced differently than each other. So I wouldn't be surprised if Danielson wants to work those other shows and put guys over. He was doing that in WWE with guys that they knew they didn't want to be over.

Not gonna lie I havent been watching much AEW since its existence as compared to WWE, I have alot going on right now to commit to watching a weekly wrestling show but I feel like they've found their identity as a promotion without working with NJPW and even aside from the WWE talent they picked up since the pandemic everything else is the icing on the Cake. Even though for me Personally, Bryan Danielson coming makes the difference for me going out my way to watch AEW over anything else. Even in WWE he had some great matches toward the end but even with Gulak for example, he chose to work with him but even killing it with him even on PPV didn't mean anything in that company because they weren't going to give him a chance to get over

Well that was wonderful! The only downside was that I had to get up at 5:30 to watch it (on replay) before work. Looking forward to Ful Gear being a Sunday morning treat with a Full Irish Breakfast!

Ooof! Miro's chest! Hell of match to kick it off, leaves it open for a second round too which I'm well up for.

I'm not well versed in Japanese wrestling, but the crowd certainly made Suzuki seem a massive deal.

Statlander is a beast in the best possible way. Loved the OC fire. Britt has improved so much in 2 years.

Tony calling Callis a piece of shit, then Ex apologising on his behalf and then Tony doubling down was delightful! That match slapped so hard! Kudos to Brandon on the throw, the crowd would have eaten him alive if that went wrong.

Punk match was more a moment than a great match, but what a moment it was! I'm maybe of the minority that would have preferred Darby to win (purely down to always wanting the young up and comer to triumph over the vet) but Darby still looks a star anyway, so all good!

Skipped Jericho and QT matches to watch later with the 10 man from the pre-show.

Woof! That ending! I'm still smiling and just disappointed there was only 23 pages in this thread. I want more! All the opinions, all the content, all the predictions and fantasy booking!

It struck me last night that a lot of WWE’s TV production techniques during matches that everyone complains about are probably designed to conceal seeing wrestlers call spots. I saw a lot of spots being called last night, and it turns out that I don’t care because I know it’s a work and the presentation is so much better than Dunn’s approach.

Can we somehow get Suzuki to beat the shit out of all or most of Dan Lambert's group on Dynamite

Given that they're feuding with Archer- let there be blood and violence.  Maybe they can punk out King Mo because King Mo deserves it.

I think the evolution (or lack thereof) of Punk’s ring style and how the AEW audience responds to it is going to be interesting to watch play out. He’s always worked at a more methodical pace than the current AEW house style. I was watching with a huge Punk fan, and even he was getting antsy during the abdominal stretch section last night. Maybe Punk can retrain them, but if he can’t, maybe he has to change, and what does that look like, etc.

Ehhhhh… Whatever reason they film the way they do, it never seems to hide spot calling, and you can hear them all the way from Uranus in the WWE.

Fun show and well worth the $50. Watching the crowd react positively to each and every wrestler who appeared on screen was worth the money.

If there are any nitpicks ...

-- I'd like to see AEW experiment with picture-in-picture during future Casino Battle Royals, particularly when wrestlers begin entering per "deck." I don't know every wrestler's entrance music, and it's hard to hear the ring announcer at times, so perhaps have the inset of a wrestler entering while maintaining a larger picture of the in-ring action can help the viewer identify who is who.

-- Maybe I'm being a bit prudish, but I sometimes get the feeling that the announce team chooses to swear because they just learned the words and want to say them as much as possible to seem cool. We get it -- you're angry and upset. But months upon months of dropping "S" bombs while announcing with Callis gets extremely tiring.

-- Got a laugh out of JR mentioning how he was "afraid to chew" while having breakfast with Minoru Suzuki. Cringed when the first thing out of JR's mouth regarding Leyla Hirsch is that she's an awesome softball player (she's Lady Sid!).

-- It's been nearly a year since the Shida match on Dynamite, and AEW still has no clue what to do with Abadon. She sounded extremely over when she was introduced, and I liked the 80s-esque mohawk. But she did little of note outside of saying "Boo" to Shida and Sakura and getting cheap heat with the Skye Blue elimination.

There isn’t much to do with Abadon. She’s still a very green, developing wrestler, who isn’t really all that good right now. AEW is actually doing her a huge favor by limiting her exposure. There is no need to rush her into spots she’s not ready for.

Speaking of developing female wrestlers, Tay is a delight, but I am not so much a fan of all this dosey-doe stuff she’s been adding to her arsenal lately. Like her tape watching has moved on from Shibata to prime Tanahashi. Take the words of KENTA to heart: Your style is kick!
