AEW Dynamite - 5/19/2021

Recommended Posts

Last week's Dynamite thread is dead, long live this week's!

(Did we ever find out what happened to Kane on May 19th?)

Don't know if this is a live or taped edition, but we DO have matches set up!

Varsity Blonds v.s. The Young Bucks (AEW Tag Team Championship)

Austin Gunn v.s. Anthony Ogogo

Christian Cage v.s. Matt Sydal (looking forward to this the most)

Red Velvet v.s. Serena Deeb (NWA Women's Championship)

These are the matches I got off a Daily DDT article from yesterday, isn't there also an Acclaimed/Mosley and Kingston match? I'd love to be able to reference AEW's website but it's pretty dire. I maintain that if they really want to succeed they need to enhance their online presence. YouTube uploads of (sometimes major) events on Dynamite won't appear until days later and the STATE of their website. You figure a promotion that relies on the online fanbase for its foundation and the majority of their filmed material would be on top of this stuff.

Anyway, excited as always despite the many flaws. At least they've sort of chilled on people being interrupted immediately during promos or interviews!

EDIT: Oh what the fuck, someone had the same idea at the same time! Apologies.

So this week's lineup is full of foregone conclusions but I still think there's some good stuff.  I'm most looking forward to Velvet/Deeb though Cage/Sydal should be good too.  Gunn/Ogogo feels like it should be on Dark but I expect something with Cody to happen.  And even if it feels obvious that Mox/Kingston will win I think that the mix of gimmicks and styles could make for a pretty entertaining match.

Honestly compared to the last couple weeks I appreciate an on-paper cooldown episode so even if it's not a home run I'm still gonna be quite alright with it.

I’m glad Serena is back I’m looking forward to that match. Definitely feels like a cool down but there’s always great bits and surprises. I will be switching back and forth between this and the warriors lakers game though. Nba is gonna be strong tonight.

I'm pumped as hell Serena's back. That ought to be a pretty good one, Velvet's starting to put it all together pretty well. Beyond that, like @Sex Machine Gun, I'm probably looking forward to Christian/Sydal most. I'm also stoked to see the Blondes, I haven't been keeping up with the Dark shows like usual lately, so I'm eager to see how they're coming along.

Ouch. I'd never had reason to check but that is dire. Any intern with a vague familiarity with Squarespace should be able to whip something far greater up within a week. Scroll-bars that don't scroll & all that did grey-space as you shift down the page! The Youtube lag is also really unacceptable; content needs to be up within hours. I know they've been shooting for WCW on occasion, but that website is giving me early 00s WCW vibes and not in a good way. Whoever is leading on that media/socials aspect of the business should probably be ditched - poor.

Unless you are an e commerce site, who the fuck uses actual webpages anymore? All online social engagement is through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, & You Tube. What could possibly be on an AEW website that isn't covered by one of the socials? Does anyone actually visit the WWE webpage for... anything? AEW's merch is run through a subsidiary of PWTs. Their video content goes onto You Tube. They have a separate ticket website for events. What is even the purpose of an AEW website?

Either I am the old man yelling at clouds, or you are. I can't tell yet, lol.

You ignored where I said they neglect YouTube as well. Whatever your views on media are or however you want to be an apologist for a lack of effort, I'm fairly sure reading will still be involved.

I didn't ignore it. I disregarded it. That's not meant to disregard you. But my experience doesn't reflect that. I have seen a lot of AEW moments pop up in my You Tube feed very quickly. I'm talking Dynamite segments and recaps less than an hour after the show ends. The Mike Tyson stuff was up quick as hell. But maybe you're right and it's only like the 10% of stuff I am seeing in my feed vs the 90% that doesn't make it up in a timely manor?

Holy shit! Dudes were firing off live rounds with their words tonight. Platinum Max's rap in particular was fire. At first I thought saying Kingston looked like a box of Newports was the biggest burn, but then came that comment about Oral Sessions. My jaw about dropped for that.

Archer and Miro's segment was the shit. LET THEM FIGHT!

Pillman Jr. cut a decent little promo.

I laughed my ass off at Cutler throwing in a third can of cold spray. I then laughed even harder at Kingston stealing Nick's socks.

Kingston is definitely a NY / NJ thug because only they know to make you take your shoes off when they rob you since that's where you hide your emergency money.  When you get mugged, you just give the dude your wallet, knowing that only takes a phone call to cancel credit and debit cards and you've got at least twenty bucks stuffed inside your socks.  If your kicks are nice, the mother fucker steals them too.

As much as I hate the Bucks, that was a tidy finishing sequence.

Serena Deeb is fucking metal.

I hope Kingston and Moxley have a segment where they throw the shoes on a power line in some seedy neighborhood.

The idea of Sting working an actual match does not inspire confidence. I'm also wondering how Jericho is going to get cleared with the gimmick on his arm.

Regardless of Moxley/Kingston and the Bucks being on the top of the card, I thought their opponents should have gotten a bit more in.

Red Velvet didn't look super comfortable on the moonsaults, but is otherwise a promising prospect and I'm happy to see her get some Dynamite time. Serene Deeb keeps it tight and physical. Her return is welcome.

Christian and Sydal was Competent Veteran porn. Surprised they've never gone one on one before. Very enjoyable. More of that.

Adam Page out there to just Buckshot some dudes without the Dark Order was nice.

Ogogo not wiping the blood with the flag was disappointing.

Miro was absolutely pitch perfect on that one, man. He's gotta hold that thing forever. We also popped big for Kingston taking the sneakers - I didn't realize this was only a tri-state area thing. Deeb continues to be the in-ring MVP of every Dynamite she's on

I realize we’re not sure if Ogogo is actually any good and, therefore, actually worth it at this point, but I feel like it was maybe a mistake to not fully commit and license the real version of “Red Right Hand” for his theme.

The PPV is looking really impressive.

I'm all in on the wacky hijinks of Mox and Kingston, they're always really, really good.

I'm still not on the Deeb bandwagon, the match didn't really change my opinion of her. My mom watched this episode, and she said "that old woman is the champion?" I had to explain, "she looks old cause she does yoga."

I hate Ogogo, but I'm all for Austin (the worst Gunn) getting beat up.

My favourite part of the oral sessions line was his post delivery "boom boom boom" as he thrusted his shit.

Miro and Deeb were otherwise MVPs. Deeb is full on Bret now. Good for her. They've gotten smart with these "cool down" episodes knowing when to hold big matches. NBA play in with the biggest game of the season to date tonight.
