AEW Dynamite - 5/12/2021

Recommended Posts

Moxley/Nagata was really good and the right length for what it was, great slobberknocker. I prefer Nagata post-40 to pre-40, and it's honestly not that close either.

I changed the channel at one point in Cody's promo. The problem with wrestlers trying to be sincere is it goes against their very nature, it's not great.

SCU/Bucks was better than I expected. Kazarian's still got it and was honestly pretty great in this. Daniels is kind of whatever at this point. Bucks mocking the Shawn/Flair superkick cheese ruled. Bucks should never be babyfaces again it's a massive fucking waste, their snark is honestly the best parts.

I am pretty sure Pac killed Orange Cassidy on that Liger bomb, Jesus Christ. Match was fine up until that but that was some "Bryan Danielson had to retire from wrestling" stuff. The angle was fine but it sure looked like this was supposed to be more dramatic and Cassidy was just too out of it to do whatever the plan was.

I liked the Pinnacle/Inner Circle segment but felt it was a bit long.

Main event was very intense, Darby was a great champion. The ass kicking he took in this was next level. I like Miro but I struggle to think of who his best opponents will be, then again he may be the perfect man for Champion Kills Random People. I also don't really get Lance Archer constantly running in to be around Sting but not actually with Sting.

Ok, I luv ya AEW, but I’m going to need two things from you.

1. No more Cody “announcements”. Why not just an angle or something to set up the PPV match with Ogogo? Do we need to hype it as a “big announcement”? No.

2. From this point forward, if you are going to do some big stunt or anything that involves some sort of machinery, please test it beforehand to see how it will look on television. That hose was some weak ass shit. The Pinnacle had to all gather in the close corner because of not, it wouldn’t have hit any of them.

Other than that, we’re good, AEW.  Darby took a king-sized beating. Glad to see Miro finally look dominant.

Hope Moxley using the original version of Wild Thing was just because of his match with Ngata because as great as Mox is he is not fucking Onita

Hey, he's using the Troggs version and not the superior X's version.  So at least there's that.

I'd throw toning down the juice to that list. 3 month moratorium starting today.

Wow, I was about to read AEW the riot act for having the great Yuji Nagata jerk the curtain, but the rest of that show shut me the hell down in a hurry.  All of the high profile matches delivered and it was a really good show.  Mox / Nagata was nice and snug for the time it was allotted and I am a sucker for sportsmanship endings.

SCU / Bucks was a great match and the Bucks did me a favor of not being terribly infuriating tonight.  If I were SCU, I would not honor the break-up stip since the Bucks had to cheat to win, but they will do what they said they were going to do.  I hope this plays into the booking the Bucks vs. KingMox match as i would love to see SCU chicanery lead to new tag champs as well as see the Bucks get the living shit beat out of them.  Chris Daniels bled BUCKETS~!

I think MIro sold Darby's assisted cutters and that Code Red a bit more than he should have, but I can handwave that on the effect of the chop blocks and the kick ass choke sequences.  Little bastard was even smart enough to cover Miro's nose to make it harder for him to breathe.  Right guy went over and I am happy to see that at least one worker in AEW can call his shot and get booked to follow through.  Congrats, Miro.

Wasn't particularly crazy about the AEW is RAW extracurricular with the spritzer cannons and triple threat championship matches.

Lance Archer vs. Miro is the kaiju hoss fight that must be booked before I die and I hope that I am wrong about the match being better on paper than it will be live.  And a title will be on the line, no less.

I see it as him beating random folks until Silver wins it.  It'll tie to Darby's respect for Brodie and challenging Dark Order members .  Plus it'd be one helluva feel good moment for him to win it with how he earned Brodie's storyline respect at the end.  But that's for down the road.  In the meantime I'll enjoy Miro fucking up everybody in his way.

Loved the presentation of Mox/Nagata.  Really felt different from the rest of the show.  A good, stiff match that represented NJPW well.  Production *almost* missed the eyes rolling back, though!

Doing a comedy spray-down the week after the two teams tried to murder each other is unlikely to ever work well, but this seemed particularly lame. My God, the Pinnacle are WET! Clearly the Inner Circle has the upper hand now!

AND ANOTHER THING

During quarantine, I rewatched the '01-'04 G1 Climaxes and every Dome Show (not just 1/4) from like '99 til whenever the wheels fell off - Yuji Nagata has always been fucking great. He was great when he won his first G1, his long title reign has way more good matches than it gets credit for (he literally went Broadway against Nakanishi and it's very good), he's one of Japan's greatest interpromotional performers ever and his passing of the torch to Tanahashi is a criminally ignored chunk of quality. Yuji Nagata is a DADDY.

2 really bit picks, but

Not only is Jericho barely selling the horrendous fall from last week, but Blood and Guts *WASN'T* THE BLOWOFF???

and 2, as good as the Miro/Darby was, that finish was total ass.  Just put the damn hold on right, that pull back looked like it barely tickled.  That might be the worst submission finish ever.

That was clear as soon as it was announced for Dynamite rather than the PPV, wasn't it?

Mox/Nagata was the bee's knees.

Bucks/SCU was really good. Bucks are such great smarmy assholes.

Darby/Miro was riveting. A tad too long, but I get why it was.

The Cody stuff was MEH. I want Ogogo to punch him into paternity leave.

Blood & Guts being a chapter in a story and not the cataclysmic conclusion is some bullshit. The lame Raw ripoff "bubbly bath" tonight was lame too.

Next week is looking a little light (unless I'm spacing on something).

The PPV is shaping up to be a blast.

All in all, tonight was a fun 2 hours.

Lost in the rest of Cody's promo, I'm sure part of him saw the money being thrown around on licensed music and is trying to get Tony to gift him some Willie Nelson.

Gonna be hilarious when this backfires and Adam Page gets Silver Stallion.

Yeah, the champagne thing sucked. It was good exactly twice, 20 years ago.

Hope Orange isn't legit hurt, that was scary on the same level as what happened to Starks kinda. If the entire thing, including the triple threat was an audible, then BIG ups. Crowd was very into that announcement.

Britt Baker. That's it, that's the paragraph.

I like Cody, but he's gotta freshen up a little. Paternity leave will be good for him.

I kinda have to say... I loved "I'm sorry, I love you." I'm that person now. Looking forward to the Varsity Blonds match, I haven't been catching Dark lately so I haven't seen them in a bit (besides the 4 way a few weeks ago)

Jimi > X > Troggs. Nagata looked great here. I had a secret hope he'd rock the black and gold WCW gear. Great match with a couple scary parts. I liked the show of respect afterwards.

Edit - how the hell did I forget to bring up the main event?! I absolutely loved that. I love that ECW interwoven story style

They actually got me believing that Darby might come back and win that match.  Or maybe they got me really wanting him to.

Either way, a great match.  Hate to see this Darby run end, but there’s probably a great Ethan Page match in his near future, so there’s that to look forward to.

Thought the show was a blast. Moxley/Nagata was awesome. Marked out for Wild Thing, loved showing both making their way to the entry pre-entrance. Great match and I hope we see more Nagata in AEW, a perfect legend from the WCW years to have.

Bucks/SCU was really good. Outcome never in doubt but still lots of great moments and had me wishing for SCU to pull it off. Daniels covered in blood still fighting back to the end. I was hoping Kazarian was gonna make that run the ramp dive in for one last save at the end.

Always love Cody's epic promos. Surprised Christian is just gonna be in the Casino battle rather than a singles PPV match. Looking forward to Christian/Sydal next week though, and also the return of Serena Deeb! Found the Bubbly Bath amusing, figured that the Stadium Stampede was coming. Kind of surprised Jericho was back so soon, thought they would tease him being out a little bit. Double or Nothing is coming together nicely now.

Figured Miro was winning but they had me rooting for Darby to pull the upset. Some excellent sequences throughout and I loved Darby's comeback towards the end. now I am all in on Miro vs Murderhawk! that shall be epic.

A rare draw with Orange/Pac, but makes sense rather than either guy going singles against Omega on PPV at the moment. PWInsider says it was supposed to be a 20 minute draw but Aubrey called an audible after Orange got hurt.

Good show aside from Cody trying to act like he's Hogan or Hacksaw circa 1988 going against whatever evil foreign heel was antagonizing him that month. At least he didn't try to add some "loser salutes the winner's flag" stip.

I haven't paid much attention to Nagata, but he match with Moxley was a nice, hard hitting opener.

SCU haven't done much for me in forever, but the match with the Bucks was great. When they want to tone down their schtick and actually wrestle, the Bucks are as good as anyone and all their douchebag heel manerisms worked well here. Was SCU's vow that they had to break up as a team or retire all together? I'm glad they didn't have some post-match dissension as that would have been too cliche.

Neither Cassidy nor Pac really needed to lose and either of them being in a singles match with Omega is that new or exciting, so it being a three way was actually the best resolution IMO.

I liked the main event but was hoping it would have been more of a glorified squash.

The way the IC/Pinnacle feud has been rushed through has been a bigtime miss. Jericho should have been off tv until the PPV to sell the injury and the Attitude Era hosing did no one any favors. I guess the Bunkhouse Stadium Stampede is going to be live considering there's a live crowd, so we'll see if this comes off well or not.

Yo, CHRIS DANIELS. That was wild. If that's it for those guys, it was the best possible match of that style they could have done I think, YMMV on the finish
