This is depressing.  Because it was written by the Carter family.  So this is super hardcore country.

===================================================

The Carter family version, which is Depression Incarnate.  Drunk son, dead mama, THAT'S Country.

=================================

Johnny Cash does a peppy version because he was awesome.

This is a Louvin Brothers song about sucking it up and taking it like a MAN.  I assume they recorded this in 1956 because the Carter family recorded this in 1934.

===============================

The Carter family recorded this song about sucking it up and taking it like a WOMAN.

================================

Of course this song written in 1874 and first recorded in 1926 by Luther B. Clarke and Blue Ridge Highballers, the first truly great name in country music history.  HIGHBALLERS~!  They add an extra song at the end because its what you did if its the 1920s and you're a fucking Highballer.

The Louvins doing a Roy Acuff song is about as country as it gets.

Bill Haley doing a Roy Acuff song is very odd.  But still very moving.

Dig the harmonies.

The big thing I've learned in this thread is that I should have heard about the Delmore brothers a long time ago.

Louvin brothers do some Rockabilly with some kind of hidden sexual meaning, prolly.

===========================

Sun records released a version by Gene Simmons.  I don't think it's the guy from Kiss with the long tongue.  ROCK OUT!

What?  WHAT?!?

============================

Oh, this is a traditional English folk song from the 1820's, thus the horrible depressing story.  Here's the Callahan Brothers' version from the the mid 1930s.

===========================

Dolly does a version.

Easter and you didn't go to church, FOR SHAME!  It's the Louvins before they were called the Louvins. The Loudermilk brothers in 1951 on the radio, harmonizing like motherfuckers.
