2021 STUFF ABOUT SPORTS MEDIA THREAD

Have we ever discussed how shitty ESPN.com is?  I wanted to read something that is behind the ESPN+ paywall, which shouldn't be a problem because I subscribe to ESPN+.  The problem is, once I sign in I get a pop up that says, "You already have an ESPN+ Monthly Plan, but you can save 15% if you sign up for an annual plan."  I don't want a fucking annual plan, because I bundle this shit with Hulu and Disney+ and I'm not about to give these assholes $69.99.  So, I exit out of this shit, and it won't let me read the fucking article.  I'm signed in, it says I have an active account, I can watch all the videos and shit I want, but I can't read the article at the top of their homepage.

Yeah, I had a snafu with debit card changes, had to resign up to access HULU, still cant read ESPN plus stuff, despite signing in. . .

How many billions of dollars does Disney make a year?  They can't afford someone to design a website that works?  The internet has been around for over 25 years now, it doesn't make any sense that a multi-billion dollar corporation has a website that doesn't work.  A 15-year-old can create a working website over a weekend.  It would be one thing if this was a scale problem, where they created a website that couldn't handle the massive volume a site like ESPN.com gets, but this is just a basic design problem that anyone with a little bit of knowledge should be able to fix.  It feels like either gross incompetency or a grift to get more cash out of their subscribers.

So glad I didn't know her when we were both at IU. Luckily, she was broadcast and I was print.

My wife is also an IU alum, and also in journalism (she was broadcast).  She wasn't there at the same time as Steele, but she's always been a fan.  Jon Gruden graduated from the same high school as my wife.  It's been a rough couple of weeks for her with all her fellow alumni saying/doing dumb shit.

If you're a Rovell, Shams or Woj who has no real talent besides access I'm sure you do this all the time.  I mean half the shit Rovell puts out is just lightly-rewritten press releases.  But that doesn't make it good journalism practice, it just makes those dudes hacks.

Speaking of hacks, the Shams piece from yesterday? The one that was clearly ghostwritten by Kyrie's agent?

I'm someone who went to school for journalism, but never actually worked as a journalist, and I can tell you that this goes against journalists are taught.  For context, I was studying journalism in the mid to late '00s, right as all the rules were changing.  All my professors were salty old reporters, and pretty much all of them spent the entire semester looking at the class and asking, "Why do any of you want to do this?"  The general consensus among them was that nothing we were being taught is going to mean anything going forward.  I remember I took a class about broadcast journalism, and it was being taught like there were going to be a camera man, a sound person, a video editor, and someone putting your quotes into a script.  The professor brought in a young, newly hired reporter, to tell us about how she puts together a story.  She had to set up her own camera on a tripod, mic herself and any interview subjects, run back to the station to edit the video, and write her script so that it can be put on the 6 o'clock news that evening.  Nobody pays for news any more, so there is no budget for anything.  Therefore, no one actually can spend any time reporting anything thoroughly.  So, instead of interviewing 20 people, to get the full breadth of a story, you start a relationship with one or two people and get everything from those one or two people.  Since all of their information comes from one or two people, those people have an inflated importance to that reporter's career.  So, when it comes time to write about one of those people, there is a huge conflict of interest.  That's how you get a reporter sending his entire story to Bruce Allen and calling him, "Mr. Editor."

Related to Schefter - his ESPN deal is up after the 2022 Draft (the exact date wasn't stated)

Reportedly - Caesar's Sportsbook is planning on making a big play to sign him

Man, I like JB Smoove, but the sheer amount of times I've seen him in a commercial for the last month or two is just insufferable.

This had better not become a thing.

You better believe it is a thing

The local NBC Sports channel routinely has ads for Caesars, Fan Duel and whatever fucking one hired Jamie Foxx all during the same break.

The sports books are the only folks spending advertising dollars right now

I sometimes do one of those, "let YouTube play music videos" while I'm working and that ad played about 42 times in an hour.   Between that ad and the never-ending Virginia Governor political ads, I am actually tempted to pay for YouTube.

Not to further sidetrack, but if you have the means, my god... do it.  Verizon gave me 3 free months of YouTube Premium and it was like I'd been set free.   No more "Multiple, unskippable commercials" or "Commercials longer than the thing I want to watch" before my next video.

Unless my finances take a huge hit, I'm never watching another fucking commercial again.  Straight to "Jinder Mahal wins the WWE Championship" for me, thank you very much!

Well it looks like Terry Bradshaw is the next person to be cancelled as one person's compliment on how Erin Andrews looked in last night's Devin White interview is another person's "old man pervert".   I mean at this point we expect Terry to say something crazy at his age.  That is kind of his gimmick.  Plus Terry was always kind of redneck playboy in his days.

I don't think anything comes of this.  This is one of those things that is inappropriate, but not something that will get you fired.

Yeah, he'll issue an apology that he didn't write and everyone will move on.

If he touched someone though and didn't have their consent.... well, that's gonna be different. But nothing like that has come up.

Allison Williams is leaving ESPN due to the COVID vaccine mandate

She said she won't get vaccinated while she her and her husband are trying to have a 2nd child

And yes she cited debunked "stats", said she was morally and ethically opposed to the vaccine and said ESPN bowed to "societal and political pressures."

Apparently she's morally opposed to getting a vaccine that isn't 100% effective stopping transmission.  ???   Why that makes a moral and ethical difference to her, I dunno.  I don't think any vaccine in history has been 100% effective.  Then again, Williams' comment on the issue have been half-informed and fairly dumb.

Personally, I'd fire people like Williams and Sage Steele instantly for publicly whining about how terrible ESPN is.  If i - or anyone else - went on social media and complained my firm to Nazis and cried about how awful they are, the firm would come down on us almost immediately.  And they wouldn't be wrong to do so.
