People around here are PISSED but that is mainly because Vrana is beloved because of the Cup run a couple years ago

Were they going to re-sign him?  He's an RFA.

Probably not.  Caps are pretty much right up against the salary cap right now, and they have to find a way to fit in Ovi's next contract during the offseason.  And most likely the Caps overpayed a bit to get the Panik contract off their books.

Again - you are asking for logic from fans

Anyway - much like Red Sox/Twins - the NHL has postponed Blues/Wild due to the current events in Minnesota.

Rescheduled for May 12 aka the last regular season game for both teams

Yeah, depending on what they thought Vrana would command.  I mean, Mantha makes $5.7m per.  So they got rid of about $300k in salary, based on what I'm seeing, so that doesn't really give them much room for anything.

All the Oilers did was go get a player that I'm not even sure addressed any of their actual needs, so it's business as usual.

The Jets got a Benn. Not really what we were hoping for.

Anthony Mantha scored and had an assist in his debut for Washington.  He's already improved over what he did with Detroit - when he had an opening, instead of passing through 4 defenders to a spot 4 feet behind a teammate, or waiting until he had 2 defenders in front to block his shot, he actually........shot the puck.  Amazing.

Just going to quote myself

Also, Jack Eichel is officially out for the rest of the season with a herniated disk in his neck, which sounds absurdly painful.

He essentially played 20 something games with this and was still close to a PPG player. "He's a loser who doesn't care about winning and isn't really hurt" cried people whose diet consists solely of lead paint chips.

Nicklas Backstrom will play his 1000th game for the Capitals tonight.

He will be only the 2nd Cap in franchise history to do that (Ovie is the other)

He is the 4th member of the 2006 NFL Draft to reach 1000 games (Kessel, Lucic and Jordan Staal) and the only one to do it with the same team

From the ESPN story

Quote

On Wednesday night, the NHLPA held a Zoom call with Canucks players to discuss their concerns, a source told ESPN. On Thursday, some players reported to the Canucks facility and underwent medical examinations and cardiology screenings. After that, the NHL, NHLPA and Canucks said they would determine the best course of action going forward.

All players who had COVID must be cleared by a team doctor and cardiologist before returning to the ice. However, some players still had reservations about suiting up so soon.

One player told ESPN on Tuesday that although doctors have told him he is no longer contagious after contracting the virus, he is still experiencing some aftereffects such as brain fog. The player told ESPN that he is planning to resume play with the team, though he is concerned about "the unknown."

Miller was one of the few players on the team who did not contract the virus in the past few weeks. Many players were symptomatic -- experiencing body aches, chills, dehydration -- including one player who required an IV, a source told ESPN.

Anthony Mantha scored again in his 2nd game with Washington. Jakub Vrana scored (on a breakaway after a gorgeous pass) in his first game with Detroit and looked good.  So far, working out well for both teams.

Anthony Mantha has 4 games with Washington. Jakub Vrana had four TONIGHT for Detroit against Dallas. He's got 5 total and Richard Panik has 1 - this trade has worked out well for both sides so far.

Vegas's win yesterday meant that they were the first team to clinch a playoff berth

They are the fourth NHL team to make the playoffs in their first four seasons

How many of those were after the original expansion in 1967?

With 8:55 left in the 2nd tonight, Detroit led Dallas 1-0. They'd also be outshot 36-3. Dallas would eventually go on to win in OT after a brutal turnover that will be ignored by Jeff Blashill.

Blackhawks Andrew Shaw - who is somehow only 29 - is retiring after 10 years as it was "highly recommended" to him by doctors to stop playing due to concussions
