2021 HORROR MOVIES

Bah.  Someone uploaded V/H/S 94 in a format that you could watch it in without eye strain and with sound quality that did not sound like a Chipmunks album.  It was pretty good and surprisingly boobs light compared to the first two V/H/S movies.

I am on a roll this October.   Now that I have gotten V/H/S 94, Halloween Kills, and my HH movie pick under my belt, my next task for the frightful season is to watch the last two episodes of Chapelwaite and binge the available episodes of the new season of Creepshow.

Yeah, I am not a big fan of the joints that must be endured rather than enjoyed either.  Anyways, I think the 80's was the Golden Age of Trashy Horror since it was at the height of the slasher movie boom, so nearly every horror movie made had slasher movie tropes baked into them even if they were monster movies.

And of course the list of sleazy giallo is a mile long.

If I am being brave and am pushing the boundaries of taste but not blowing them into a million bits, I guess my Top 10 list in no particular order would look something like:

1. The Basket Case trilogy - The twisted tale of a guy and his deformed and batshit insane conjoined brother.  There are some scenes in this trilogy that you will not be able to unsee.

  Reveal hidden contents

Like when the deformed formerly conjoined brother is having sex with a deformed formerly conjoined girl in the middle movie of the trilogy

2. The Sister of Ursula - This may be the sleaziest giallo ever made.  It even beats out Don't Torture A Duckling.

3. The Night of the Hunted - The template of Euro-Trash horror. Brigitte Lahaie naked = good times.

4. The Last House On The Left - Wes Craven made a movie so sleazy that the Italians copied the formula for years to come.  That is really saying something.

5. The Last House on the Beach - The Italian trash epic that pretty much made the appearance of a nun in Euro-trash horror movies (The Killer Nun, Flavia:  The Heretic) a mandatory thing.  It is also blatantly crafted from the Last House on The Left formula as if the title wasn't a dead giveaway.

6. Nightbeast - A movie about an alien monster rampaging through Baltimore featuring the most awkward sex scene ever captured on film and a teenage JJ Abrams contributing to the soundtrack. I'm not even joking.  You cannot make up shit like this.

7. The Dead Next Door - a zombie chunk blower so wretched that Sam Raimi could not bring himself to use his actual name in the credits.   This movie is produced by "The Master Cylinder."  This gem, LeBron James, and DEVO are the only worthwhile things ever to come out of Akron, Ohio.

8. The New York Ripper -  Yeah, it's as mean spirited as you've heard.

9.  Pieces -  Yep.  That's an X-Rating, kid.

10. Evil Toons - You will not ask why the demonically possessed pornstar fondles her victims' boobs before she kills them.  You will just accept it.

NIGHT OF THE HUNTED was really good. Favourite Rollin might be THE GRAPES OF DEATH, but this ranks for sure. Perhaps only sleazier than some of his other entries due to the duration of the sex scenes.

Can I watch HERCULES IN THE HAUNTED WORLD and count it as horror? I does have Christopher Lee!

Yeah, Night of the Hunted is awfully good to be so ridiculously trashy.

It is also written and directed by Mario Bava, but it has more of the feel of a classic peplum than it does a horror movie.

It's not Bava's first foray into fusto, either.   One of these days I will have to make a Top Ten Swords & Sandals list.

The Hercules with Lou Ferrigno better at least be an honorable mention on that list. So bad yet so good.

I tried to find Creepshow's new episodes on the Prime Shudder but no go. It was a couple weeks ago though, I should check again.

You will hear more about a named director from above very soon in my HH entries...

EDIT: Oooo, forgot to mention the last History of Horror, which was Psychics. I expected Eli to pull Patrick out of the woodwork but nope. We did get a very good and highly honorable love-in for The Dead Zone (still the best King movie not titled Stand By Me). And of course he showed the explosion of John Cassavetes from The Fury a total of four times during the course of the hour, haha. Go figure. It was also pretty wild to see Cate Blanchett show up for a chat.

EDIT: Instead of clogging up the thread I'll just say here that there is an Antlers trailer up on TV that has Guillermo del Toro explaining why you should go to the theater to see a horror movie. And he's subtitled, as if you can't understand what Guillermo del Toro is saying.

The Slumber Party Massacre remake was a bit too woke for my liking, but it wasn't entirely bad.  It was pretty cool to see all of the ladies not making horror trope level bad decisions, but all of the dudes were portrayed as complete simps.  There has got to be a happy medium where the girls are not standard issue slasher movie knife fodder and the dudes are not complete idiots.

And yeah, totally looking forward to Antlers, but streaming has spoiled me and I wish I could just watch it at home same day as theaters.

That annoys be because I love that movie.

You have great taste. I love Let the Right One In (2008) as well. Fortunate the UK/European DVD release didn't have that problem. I have it in a safe place.

Good man.  I also imported the UK / Euro version because I heard about the translation issues, and that's a shame because Let The Right One In is one of the best vampire stories ever told.

Wow, Lamb and Titane are very similar.  To be so depressing and hard to watch, they still have a bittersweet side to them rooted in family issues.  Guðnason and Rapace are totally on point and I think that director Valdimar Jóhannsson may have a Best Foreign Language Film nom in his future.

The next History ep will be, fittingly, Infections.

Yeah, my DVR is going to hate me this Tuesday and the schedule for Halloween - All Saints morning is also going to be tremendous.   Your once a year chance to DVR Haxan will come sometime in the wee hours of the morning on November 1st.

Well said, @J.T.. I have Let the Right One In my top ten horror films ever:

1. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974).

2. Night of the Living Dead (1968).

3. Halloween (1978).

4. Let the Right One In (2008).

5. Shaun of the Dead (2004).

6. Dawn of the Dead (1978).

7. Psycho (1960).

8. Scream (1996).

9. The Exorcist (1973).

10. The Blair Witch Project (1999).

Zombies are my favourite horror villains.

I watched Halloween 78’ and the two David Gordon Green movies in a row with my wife. They’re satisfying as a whole piece on some levels, but Kills is really chasing Myers as Metaphor down a lot of rabbit holes. It expects a lot of its audience in one regard, but the flashbacks and cutaways to the previous movies really show a lack of respect towards its viewers. Halloween 2018 is like a well crafted fan film and Kills is more like a fun but goofy graphic novel based on the source material.

Ultimately they’re the two best-made sequels for me, but they’re not necessarily as fun as the really bad ones, and I don’t  desperately need Green’s franchise of movies explaining and elaborating on why the first movie works so well. I can have fun with these, but the perfect number of Halloween movies would be one. My wife had never seen any of them before these three, and I’m very excited to tell her all about how wild the original sequels get (Curse of Thorn BayBay!) Tonight is The Night He Mansplained at Home.

On the plus side, it has Ethan Hawke and Scott Dickenson is the director.  On the negative side, it is coming out around Dump Months territory.

I will go in with low expectations.
