May 2016 was the start of DC Rebirth. Five years later, what did we think to this era?

I thought Rebirth got off to a great start with the one-shot meta commentating on the darkness and characters getting forgotten. Wally West was brought back and THAT shocking ending. I enjoyed the followup, The Button. I bought Doomsday Clock as it came out. Read the first half but with the delays decided to get the rest and wait to read it all. Still need to.

As for the Batman books, a disappointment with the exception of Super Sons and the Batman Annuals. Really didn't like Tom King's Batman run. Heroes in Crisis also by King was terrible. Give me New 52 Bats with Batman, Incorporated by Grant Morrison, Scott Snyder's Batman and Batman and Robin by Peter J Tomasi/Patrick Gleason over his Rebirth books. I enjoyed Superman by Tomasi/Gleason and Greg Rucka on Wonder Woman.

i also enjoyed the Rebirth special. DCeased was a really fun series (i still need to read the spinoffs). Doomsday Clock was solid, but its publishing schedule negated so much of its larger impact. nothing else really lived up to the promise of the Rebirth one shot. i didn't read all of King's run, but what i did was fine. Nightwing was downright horrible for two years.

i really need to read Snyder's Metal and Death Metal stories.

There was good stuff at the beginning with the Superman books, Aquaman, Green Arrow, etc. I think things generally took a turn though as Didio put more of his mark on it. Rebirth was something that he never wanted to do and it showed with how he let Snyder, King, ad later Bendis run away with things. Hell with Snyder it was almost immediately. I think King and Snyder had solid ideas but also needed to be told no more often and work more within what Johns was trying to craft for the universe on the whole. Doomsday Clock was quite good and would have been the perfect ending/resetting for DC, but its clear ether Johns or his artist were too slow along with having to deal with whatever changes were forced upon them by Didio in favor of the previously mentioned writers.

Yeah the scheduling delays for Doomsday Clock and the effect that had on the rest of the line. Fair play to you reading Nightwing sticking through the Ric rubbish. I'd recommend Metal. Yet to read the sequel. Haven't read Three Jokers either.

I really liked the early period of DC Rebirth with the one-shot, The Button, the opening arcs to Superman/Wonder Woman, shame it couldn't keep that up. I was disappointed by Tom King's Batman having loved Vision and mostly liked Grayson with Tim Seely. King was better suited to the Batman Annuals, that was his best Batman works by far.

This might be unpopular but give me The New 52 era to Rebirth. The New 52 turns 10 this year. I'll do a retrospective on that too.

As someone who first started buying regularly during the New 52 I can't agree with this at all. For the most part the best books within the New 52 were the ones that basically could have happened still in the pre-Flashpoint universe.

More of Roy Harper's history pre-flashpoint is restored, his stint with the JL, his dead daughter killed by the Electrocutioner. Doesn't seem he ever lost his arm however.

The next Infinite Frontier Secret Files issue is about Jade and Obsidian

OA is now part of the United Planets.

Earth 0 is designed to become the 5th World. It's why the Earth has multiple (7) Earth Born GL's and more Superhumans than any other planet in the universe. Krypton was one the 7 Crux Worlds along with one other which was also destroyed known as Xanshi. OA and Mogo are also Crux Worlds. Those planets create superhumans and wonders for the universe.

Several Earth based Green Lanterns are now assigned to the Crux Worlds, like Jessica, Simon, I guess Jo for OA. Kyle is one of those as well but...

A third of the GL sectors are disbanded and the sectors they're from are now under United Planets jurisdiction. Remaining GL's in those sectors will be bodyguards, military escorts. Guy is one of them.

The new police group the UNITED will protect space.

Thousand and 1 GL's shipped to the Dark Sector. John Stewart is their Quest leader.

Anyway OA's Battery gets blown up and most (but not all) remaining sectors with Green Lanterns are depowered and or lost in space. Like Kyle.

Seems only Hal, Jo and few others have Green Lantern powers.

I finished up Gene Colan's run on Batman. It started off okay. I liked the early Gerry Conway scripts. But there were no classic stories and the monthly continuity wasn't that interesting. No matter how hard Moench tried, I wasn't interested in Batman's romantic relationships or the cast of characters. Colan had a lot of different inkers, and I don't know if it was his pencils or the inkers, but I didn't like the way a lot of the characters' faces were depicted. I especially disliked the way he drew Jason Todd and other kids. His Bruce Wayne was inconsistent as well. It's possible that his work on Batman works better in isolation than reading it within the continuity. The last issues I read were Batman #373 and 383, which he drew after he stopped working on the Batman book regularly, and those books were much more interesting visually than his end run on Detective, but again, that may be because of the inking. The reason I started reading Colan on Batman is because I liked a lot of Colan's work on Daredevil, but I'd have to say that his Daredevil work was better than his Batman run. Not sure if anyone feels differently about that.

Kyle's history dating Jade is back in. Still think Jessica retains first Woman lantern of Earth, so Jade stint as GL of Earth may still never had happened.

Chroma was killed by Gog pre Flashpoint, but here in this new universe he never died and stayed gone until recently.

I have read the latest Flash Issue,  Jay Garrick (already greying around both sides of his hair during WW2 and is a Christian) and the covert action hero Happy Terrill Ray(who is an atheist at the start and probably gay) during WW2 tries to stop Hitler and his Spear of Destiny. Parsifal from the Golden Age Elseworld shows up as well, his powers turn off powers.

Of course the Wally West speedforce body hopping happens in this story. And the good guys win in the end.

At the end.. Wally speedforce hops into Professor Zoom body in the past, with the cartoon Legion of Doom. The groups history seems to be part of Earth 0 history now.

Former Batman (and Defenders) writer David Anthony Kraft (DAK) passed away from COVID pneumonia.

He wrote a lot of good 70s Batman stories.

Colan's early  Batman stuff was good imo, I really loved the re-working of both Dr. Death and the Red Monk story. Hell, Vampire Batman by Colan is way scarier than Red Reign Batman to me

The JSA post Infinite Frontier. Huntress is back in somehow, Liberty Belle and Sandman may be dropped.

I'd rather have Sandman, but then I never read the older JSA where she was a member.

I don't know yet how they gonna do her history without her dad Bruce and her mom Selina and Earth 2 Robin existing. Silver Age Green Arrow and Speedy are also Golden Age Green Arrow and Speedy now via time travel to the past. Seems more restoration of pre crisis history but remixed to fit in better.

Per Degaton is the first villain of possible new JSA series, solicits tomorrow could show the JSA book.  Also Stargirl solo as well is happening.

I forgot about Batman '89 #1. Thanks for the reminder. When's it out?

8/10/21, 6 issues limited series.  Ignores the 3rd and 4th movie from the Batman movie series.

Another Batman book has been announced, Batman: The World, creators from all over the world.

Both Stargirl and maybe JSA won't arrive until months later.

Jessica Cruz is Yellow Lantern now.

Connor who appears in latest Suicide Squad is a clone of Connor and of many clones perhaps. While regular Connor is still wearing his retro inspired suit from the 90s.

Flashpoint Thomas Wayne Batman will be back and teaming up with Calvin Ellis and the rest of the new JI.
