RazorbladeKiss87 Posted October 6, 2025 Posted October 6, 2025 Paging @Johnny Sorrow (and anyone else but i have to think he's the man to ask): for years, I swore I hated jam bands and especially the Dead. Lately I've been enjoying their studio recordings. It's making me want to branch out. Where should I start with Phish?

Lately I've been enjoying their studio recordings. It's making me want to branch out. Where should I start with Phish? Phish isn’t really my area of deep knowledge since it took me a while to get into them. (In the jam world, I’ve mostly been into the Dead, Umphrey’s, Goose, Billy Strings, and Greensky.) There’s a lot of Phish material available through streaming without needing LivePhish. They do have some free shows there, too. There’s also quite a bit on Nugs if you have a subscription. The Island Tour from 4/2–4/5/98 is often talked about in the same way Deadheads reference May ’77. Their 10/31/94 Halloween show is one of the most famous since they performed The White Album in full. The Clifford Ball is available on streaming and is generally very well regarded. The Baker’s Dozen shows at MSG are also great listens, and Big Cypress (12/31/99) is legendary, though it doesn’t have an official release. You’d have to find it on ReListen. I also think their current run has been really strong. The shows I’ve heard from this year sound fantastic. 1

I like Phish just fine, but to be honest I'm not a huge jamband guy besides the Dead. I find that so many of them try and emulate the jamming part of the Dead but lack the lyrical punch of their songs. There's a bit of darkness and ruggedness to the Dead that so many of those bands don't have. I do love Widespread Panic, however. 1

I haven't gotten to the live aspect of the Dead yet but I'm really enjoying Workingman's Dead.

Spoiler EDIT II: I just realized that the brother of the two sitting on top of the stove looks like like Slim Charles from The Wire haha Edited October 7, 2025 by Curt McGirt

Drake's lawsuits have officially been dismissed. lol
