So cool Michael Keaton's back as Bruce Wayne/Batman. It will be 30 years exactly in 2022 provided The Flash comes out as scheduled. Also cool, getting the yellow oval on the Bat symbol again. I grew up on that through the 1960s Batman TV show, Batman (1989), Batman Returns (1992) and best of all, Batman: The Animated Series. Looks like they're working off the Batman Returns Batsuit.

Finally got around to watching Shazam all the way through. Really good! Lots of laying-the-groundwork stuff early on which drags just a bit. It pays off later, but it's a gutsy move for the tone that was advertised and the guy on the poster to not show up until about minute thirty five (especially with a character fewer people know all that well). Really liked that they didn't include the big thing that happens in the climactic fight in either of the trailers. The marketing for this did well to afford the third act a chance to really hit during the viewing experience. Also, while the advertisements had to lean into a lot of the humour, it balances well with the very real emotional weight at play here.

Jack Dylan Grazer is the MVP of this thing and huge chunks of the movie work largely because of what he's bringing to the table. The second act hinges on a lot of the competing insecurities and emotional needs of Billy and Freddy, and he carries it off well with both of the leads. And his energy is grounding Levy's goofiness in some real world teenage dorkiness. Good performance, well used.

Mark Strong is always a good choice for a villain, and this movie needed a guy with enough natural menace that you can imagine him making proper grown adults feel like small children. His usual thing plays great with what everyone else in this movie is doing.

I totally bit on the suggestion that they got Cavill to show up and got very excited. Well done.

Best thing in the DCEU, by far. Happy to see them really go for it with something that has less cultural mileage on it than what they normally make. More of this, DC!

Edit: Also, Freddy clearly got ripped off. Authentic Superman bullets don't come in plastic bags, you mark.

Still my favourite scene from The Dark Knight Trilogy, Batman and the now Lieutenant Gordon talking about hope, bringing Gotham back, the above card for someone who has a taste for the theatrical like you and:

Gordon: "I never said thank you."

Batman: " And you'll never have to".

Perfect.

Spoiler

Some people are speculating that Keaton Batman and the new Supergirl will replace and erase out Batfleck and Cavill Superman in universe.

Clutter Earth of sorts.
