2021 MOVIES DISCUSSION

At Close Range from '86 is on right now -- Sean Penn, Christopher Walken, Chris Penn, Tracey Walter, Mary Stuart Masterson, Kiefer Sutherland, Crispin Glover, Steven Geoffreys?!?! And I haven't even heard of this movie before, ever. Wow. It's based on the Johnston Gang out of rural Pennsylvania who was around for decades and was generations of thieves who stole tractors and basically anything that wasn't nailed down, and ended up with the patriarch murdering a ton of witnesses. They had a separate group called the Kiddy Gang (self-explanatory) who did the same. Sean must've already been in his 20s playing a high schooler but Chris looks like a baby, funny for the one who gained all the weight when he grew up. Walken is True Romance sinister in this one.

Following up on 70s 80s movies I missed out on, with Howling and American Werewolf in London being a recent two-for, I popped in Smokey and the Bandit back to back with Cannonball Run and it left me with two questions

Does anyone else besides me think that Burt Reynolds and Pedro Pascal (aka The Mandalorian aka The badass guy from Game of Thrones) look alike? Maybe its a recent rewatch of Viper vs Mountain like a few days before the double Reynolds feature, but holy shit I'd swear if they're not father son they have to be uncle/nephew

Which takes me to my next question: John Candy or Dom DeLuise? If you're picking a sidekick for your summer comedy, who do you go with? I did a rewatch of Spaceballs and Little Shop of Horrors 80s remake and while I find Candy to be funny, I don't know how to put it in words but imo DeLuise is a better Candy than Candy. The cowardly oddball if you will. The well meaning goofball. I'd be curious what you folks think, and if you have any movies you'd suggest that give one thr advantage over the other

I hear you, like in other words you can slot Candy in the Chevy Chase role from the National Lampoon movies, or as Indiana Jones himself in the IJ series?

Cause I'm not looking for better overall actor, I'm sure you're right about Candy playing anything (which now I'm begging for a deepfake edit with John Candy in the Devito role for Twins HAHAHAHAHAHA!)

I was thinking more the clown/jester role specifically, like take any 80s or 90s comedy and if you can only pick one for the funny goofy sidekick that's loyal to the lead, would you want Candy or DeLuise?

Hahahaha, now I'm picturing Candy in deep fake edits for Ferris, Marty McFly, John McClane, the old man from Jurassic Park, Goldblums character in The Fly, Ivan Drago, HAHAHAHAHA as Ace Ventura, any of Steven Segalls' roles ?, deep fake him as Booger in the Revenge of the Nerds, Currys character in Rocky Horror Picture Show ?????

My Gotch imagining Candy deep faked over a ton of 80s early 90s characters from movie and TV is cracking me tf up!!!

John Candy is... The Karate Kid! The Terminator! RAMBO!!!!! ???

Fuck me if I ever get my hands on deepfake software I'll have a field day swapping John Candy in for Tom Cruise and Sean Penn roles hahahahahahahaha! ??

Elizium I'm hoping, please ?, you can recommend a good movie showcasing John Candy as having a deep range with his acting. I'll be honest I'm way more familiar with him in comedy as say a costar or popping in for a quick scene. I'm intrigued and hope to see him chewing up scenery ?

Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Uncle Buck are definitely the two biggest. During the SCTV days he did the best character work out of the bunch, and that cast was stacked.

Obviously I don't know if he could play anything but I feel like he was talented enough that it's possible. Like, I feel like John Candy as Indiana Jones is a lesser movie, but I think it still ends up really entertaining.

I will also go to my grave as a Who's Harry Crumb? stan

Aaaaand now it’s empty. Watched FIT TO KILL last night, and right after all the videos disappeared.

Well, at least I snuck in Danger: Diabolik and Liquid Sky before the embargo.

Incident at Loch Ness is on Comet right now. It's a film I didn't even know existed but as soon as I read the description I had to watch: it's a mockumentary of Werner Herzog having a documentary filmed about him, while he's making a documentary about the Loch Ness Monster. This thing is hilarious. It's like a real life episode of Arrested Development. Apparently they tried to no-sell that it was a work and you can almost not tell. Everything is a comedy of errors: the producer is a flake who brings in his model girlfriend to wear a bikini, he has personalized suits made for the crew that have "expedition" spelled as "expetition" on the back, he renames the boat (which is bad luck) Discovery IV when there hasn't been a Discovery 1-3 ? Werner of course reacts dyspeptically which is the best part. It's a weird choice for Comet but a good one.

EDIT: Better comparison would probably be This Is Spinal Tap, now that I think about it.

Watched Vegas Vacation for the first time over the weekend and was surprised at how much I enjoyed the flick.

Had heard how bad it was for years and just avoided the mess.

Turns out it was not an embarrassment, *cough* Christmas Vacation 2, and got a Sid Caesar appearance to top it off.

Apparently Incident at Loch Ness was filmed pretty much with non-actors in all the major roles -- the editor was really an editor, the cinematographer a cinematographer, etc. And of course after all the frivolity with the producer trying to basically fake a sighting, guess what happens...

Spoiler

Nessie attacks the boat. Of course.

But of course the best part of the film is what I've enjoyed about Werner since I first saw My Best Fiend on IFC years ago and discovered this crazy, visionary man, and that's his voice. His word pronunciation tickles me to no end. I've always had a thing for broken or bizarrely accented English, and his twists on vowels (which he would probably pronounce "vow-welssss" with a hissing 'S') and consonants in his particular, idiosyncratic German accent is pure entertainment. You combine that with his somehow dry and self-effacing sense of humor that makes him seem like even a more bizarre person and you've got something great on your hands. His deadpan reactions to something like having an empty flare gun pointed at his head in this are perfect.

I guess Twitter has more influence on me than I would like; there was some bullshit going around about how many of the Best Actor winners from the 2010s really deserved it (maybe 2?) and I found myself rewatching Manchester by the Sea to see if it clicked any better a second time.  I mean, fuck Casey Affleck, and he's not one of the two deserving winners - he feels like he's playing 2 disparate roles for most of the film and it's rare that the two bleed together in any meaningful way - but the rest of the movie is better than I remembered.  It's still kind of bullshit for having kids dying to advance a character's arc, but mostly, the script just felt a lot funnier than it did the first time.  Of course, it also has Michelle Williams, and her One Big Scene in the movie got me right in the feels even harder than it did the first time, and that reminded me how ludicrous it is that she doesn't have an Oscar yet.  I put off rewatching it for the 2010s project, and I still probably wouldn't have put it on my list, but Kenneth Lonergan did a pretty nice job with it.  Also reminds me I haven't seen Margaret yet, which I ought to fix.

I tried watching The Abyss as well, since I remembered that fairly strongly from my childhood and thought it'd be a good idea to revisit it.  Wow is it some stinky-bad bullshit.  I had to turn it off after the first 45 minutes because it was so close to putting me to sleep.  I'll probably finish it at some point, but it's clearly the baby steps of James Cameron's deep-water fetish that he took to completion all over America's face and neck with Titanic.  The whole movie makes you think he'd be That Guy at a party who comes up to you and says, "Did you know we know more about outer space than we do our own ocean floor?"  Fuck off, Cameron, you douchy nerd.  Just fuck right off with that, and jerk yourself off with a warm towel at home, instead of in public.

I also tried watching Warlock, another Amazon Prime freebie that I hadn't seen since I was young and kind of remembered liking, and wow, had to turn off that total garbage, too.  Just a gruel-thin, blatantly obvious attempt to re-do The Terminator by swapping out sci-fi bullshit for witchy bullshit.  No.  Thank You.  Sir.  God, the 80s could really be shit for movies.

I've always loved Vegas Vacation. I know it has a terrible rep but I've never understood that. Probably my favorite part is the further degeneration of Cousin Eddie's family.

I also love "The Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority presents Vegas Vacation" it drags during the Audrey stuff but Clark losing at gambling, Ellen being stalked by Wayne Newton and Rusty becoming a high roller are really funny. I'll note that I never found "Christmas Vacation" funny and always get confused that it's kind of considered a "classic" xmas film, I also loved the Ed Helms as Rusty re-boot and think they should have made a sequel.

Go watch the sequel, Warlock the Armageddon, instead. It's a really fun gorefest. There's a scene with Julian Sands walking down an invisible spiral staircase from the roof of a building to the sidewalk that is so sick.

The alternative casino Eddie takes Clark to is hilarious, with games like War, guess the number and coin flip. And that buffet,  "You're right, this is the beef and this is the chicken". . .  LOL

Count me in for also really liking Vegas Vacation. I think it's pretty damn funny. The only Vacation movie I don't like is European Vacation. I must have watch Vacation a million times as a kid, Christmas Vacation is a yearly tradition, and Vegas Vacation cracks me up. At some point I'll have to check out the reboot just to see what it was like.

Anyone ever see that Christmas Vacation 2 movie? I remember coming across it on CBS or something. It's all Cousin Eddie and it's fucking terrible.
