2020 VIDEO GAME CATCH-ALL THREAD

Okay, I am beginning to spot the money sinks in PSO 2.  If you are free to play, you don't have enough "placement funds" to have anything in your personal quarters other than your auxiliary console and maybe one or two potted plants.   If you want access to an apartment that you can completely furnish, you have to subscribe.  That's kinda bullshit.

Anyway, my Duman Braver is over 20th level and took part in his first Urgent Quest last night.  I like the simple search and destroy rules for these simple baby raids and I also like the fact that they are open to the entire community.  Everyone dogpiles on the opening stage and if the community clears enough enemies, everyone gets access to the final boss fight.

My afternoons after telework are now spent sending my auxiliary (A Numan Female Techer / Force) off on gathering missions I can't be bothered with so that she can level up, while I am either in the casino losing my shirt or catching up on back sub quests.

My brief PSO 2 career is now over.  I will never complain about Eververse's a la carte microtransactions ever again after experiencing the blatant money sinks in this game.

I was going to spend a few bucks on expanding my living quarters until I saw that you can only rent space by the month rather than it being a one time flat price for a permanent upgrade like it was in the old Final Fantasy MMO.

That was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back.

I guess I will see what's what as far as how the mechanics work in the free-to-play Division 2.

Div 2's stuff is purely cosmetic.  Everything else is grinding.

Speaking of beat 'em ups, I just bought the Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle on Switch. No idea if any of these games are good, but I had some money sitting in my account after buying Devil May Cry 3 and the Phoenix Wright Trilogy, so I decided what the hell.

Included in that bundle is...

  • Final Fight
  • Captain Commando
  • The King of Dragons
  • Knights of the Round
  • Warriors of Fate
  • Armored Warriors
  • Battle Circuit

For $10, I thought 7 games is a pretty good deal, even if all of them suck.

That's totally worth ten bucks.

It's on my wish list but I can't pull the trigger because I got enough to play as it is.

By the way, my first crack at Streets of Rage 2 in over 20 years and I made it to stage 7(out of 8 ) with my five year old. Not as good the second time around with my 12 year old, who felt like he'd brought the family great dishonor by not achieving more with the old man.

So a great night for ME.

I buy pretty much everything on PSN, but Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle is indeed worth it. Now if Capcom could port the Dungeons & Dragons beat 'em ups they did to PS4/Switch/Xbox One....

Beat 'Em Up Bundle is worth it for Knights of the Round and Battle Circuit on their own, IMO. Armored Fate is awesome, too.

I spent $45 on a year's worth of PSNow in the PSNow sale, so I'm finally going to get into Double Dragon Neon, which I've wanted to play for years but never have.

Of course, I'm here for these Animal Crossing updates as well. Still playing a bit every day. Sometimes more than "a bit."

I'm playing Doom Eternal on PS4 and while it's fun at times, they've definitely made it a lot more tedious and have sucked a lot of the enjoyment out of the game. There's way too much platforming and too much emphasis on shooting demons' weak spots. If you don't hit the weak spots, every enemy, even the low level fodder demons, is an f'n bullet sponge. Nobody plays a Doom game to solve multiple puzzles per level and to have to jump, dash and climb all over the place. In my opinion, Doom is the most fun when you're just running around blasting demons in the face and hunting for keys rather than trying to figure out ways around obstacles and how to do a bunch of double jumps and dashes to not fall into a pit of lava.

Yeah seeing early gameplay videos I was immediately saying "First person platforming?  I'm out."

I liked Mirror's Edge though.

I honestly can't recommend this game to anyone else which sucks b/c I'm a huge fan of the Doom franchise. It's just not a fun game to play. I've played through the first four levels and it seems like 90% of the game is just jumping around and trying not to fall off of shit. You'll have a fairly fun run of clearing out some demons and then immediately you'll have to figure out some ridiculous puzzle or make some insane jumps to push forward. It just stops your momentum cold. Once you finish one platforming section and go, "phew, I'm glad that shit is over, now onto some demon ass kicking", they're like, "ooops, guess again asshole, here's some more jumping and climbing for ya!" There's no way I can see myself replaying this game when I'm done.

The endboss is some This Is Gonna Show Up On Lists For Years dragged out bullshit, too.

I usually stay away from spoilers and what not but I'm pretty much in "fuck this" mode with Doom. I looked up a walkthrough of the last boss and that's going to be such a fucking slog. I'm thinking of just going back to Borderlands 3 and trying out Red Dead 2 online as I found a cheap PS Plus deal over the weekend. I just don't have it in me to fight a boss for like 30 minutes or whatever the fuck.

The Big In Japan sale is on the EU PSN store.

With that being said, are Romancing Saga 2 or 3 worth playing?

Actually, might as well throw out Star Ocean Last Departure or whatever it is called.

All tempting, but old games don't always age well of course.

Romancing Saga 2 I hear is pretty difficult even for trophy hunters and Romancing Saga 3 is very nostalgic heavy.

Star Ocean First Departure is a PS4 port of the PSP remake. The graphics are a little iffy from what I hear.

With me being a Platinum hunter, I probably already have most of the games on sale. Although the Japanese PSN store has a ton of visual novels on sale....

Beat Ghost Recon: Future Soldier and got 7 trophies before I Platinum it. The partner AI in the game sorta sucks and seems to not be able to shoot enemies at times. My last 7 trophies are to beat the game on Elite, beat the game in co op, get 50% & 100% of the tactical challenges, get above 80% on all the missions, kill 1000 enemies in Guerrilla Mode, and survive all 50 waves of Guerrilla Mode on any map. Yeech.

I read an interesting review from a guy on another site. He said it was pretty boring, with too much emphasis on resource management and chainsaw.

But then he tried it on the hardest difficulty, and every fight becomes survival, something to really think about. He got a kick out of it when that happened. ymmv

Glitches in WWE games never fail to amuse me.  Messing around this morning, and i had a ref cross the ring and argue with an outside wrestler who had walked down to ringside and climbed up on the apron.  Due to a glitch, the ref and wrestler got stuck in a loop and spent approx. 7 minutes arguing.

On the other side of the ring, my opponent cradled me in a small package.  Since there was no ref to count the pin, we spent the seven minutes reversing the small package, but never managing to break it up.

When the ref finally got the outside wrestler out of the ring, he immediately dropped to his knees and counted the pin.  Keep in mind, the referee has been on the other side of the ring facing away from me (towards the crowd) for the past seven minutes and never turned my way before he counted.  He stared into the crowd the whole time and could not possibly have seen the  small package much less known if someone's shoulders were down.

WWE refs really are blind.  It's not a problem, apparently.
