2019 Summer Blockbuster Movie Pool

To be clear, I'm not angry that Detective Pikachu exists. Pikachu as a detective is a cute concept. It's just - I can rhyme off dozens of similar off-beat concepts for existing pop cultural entities without thinking too hard. (Conan as a Victorian-era dandy! The Smurfs as a WWII commando squad!) Most of them don't get made into movies. How did this one?

Detective Pikachu was a very popular title and I think they are using it to test the waters for a future live action main-RPG movie.

My wife and I went to see it last night and it's now my pick for best video game adaption to film.

Yeah, I had that one high on my RT list, and I’m already worried it wasn’t high enough.

5th on mine. Never seen the John Wick films. Action orientated I gather? If so, will have to.

Detective Pikachu is opening with approximately $58 million

React accordingly depending on your list placement.

I had this feeling(even with the 20+ years of popularity) that it was going to struggle to find an audience with adults. The trailers, the plot, and what it’s based on didn’t appeal to me whatsoever as a fan of the show when it was on. They massively made a mistake when they announced this a couple of years ago. The funny thing is they had a chance to backtrack after the success of Pokémon Go, but some fucking suit really wanted this “Detective Pikachu” shit to be a thing real bad. I hope that guy has no say in the next movie they might never make now because of his dumbass.

What are you talking about?

$58 million is a really solid opening, particularly since Endgame is still pulling strong. The first Captain America opened to $65 million.

Factoring the international in (which we don't for the competition) it's up to $170m and that's before considering stuff like the money they're making from Pokemon card box sets off this.

Like I really don't get how you look at those opening weekend numbers and think it's a failure. Divorced from wherever you thought it would land in the competition, obviously.

40 reviews in, John Wick 3 is sitting at 98% Fresh on RT

Time to swoop in late with that at the top of my RT list like I did with Wonder Woman a few years back.

Not that it helped at all in the end...

Speaking of which, I don't know if we expressly said that June 7th was the last day to turn in a valid ballot, but with New Mutants falling off the new date would be May 31st.

John Wick has dropped to 95% with 55 reviews so the unfavorables are starting to come in

I figure it will settle in around the high 80's to low 90's, so if it is in the upper half of your ballot you should be okay.
