2019 Q2 TV DISCUSSION THREAD

RIPPA

Recommended Posts

Today is Nickelodeon's 40th birthday.  Greg at Pop Arena, who does the mini-documentaries I posted a link to last month, put together a retrospective of one signature show from every year of the network here

No love for Spatakus & The Sun Beneath The Sea?

That show was weirder than Filmation's Blackstar

I loved Spartakus, but it premiered the same year as Double Dare which was a legit turning point for the channel and HAD to be recognized. Though I did respond to the DD opening and mention the Sun Beneath the Sea.

Oh, Blackstar was just the love child Snow White & the Seven Dwarves and Conan The Barbarian.

Spartakus was on a whole 'nother level of awesome weirdness.

There is a YouTuber by the name of jkurcek that has the first six episodes of the French originals posted to his YouTube channel, but I have yet to find any free online sources that have the entire 52 episode run.

I totally forgot that Menudo recorded the opening credit theme for the English version on Nickelodeon.

You have to watch Blackstar for the episodes written by my buddy Michael Reaves; he'd always manage to sneak in some weird Lovecraftian reference for no reason other than it was fun to do so. Blackstar was actually pretty damn good, but suffers from comparisons to Thundarr (and really, what can can compare to Thundarr?)

God, I don't think there is a cartoon I loved more as a child than Thundarr the Barbarian from the Star Wars biting concept for the Sunsword to the Jack Kirby inspired animation.

Reeves snuck in a lot of good subversive stuff into the scripts for the animated shows he wrote for.

He penned that phat Boogeyman episode for The Real Ghostbusters and his novel, The Shattered World, has been a proud feature of my bookshelf since I was in high school.

BTW - I looked at Asner's IMDB and he has this, SIX things in post-production, SIX things in pre-production and three other projects that he has announced.

Ed Asner will be 90 in November

Lord please let me make it to 90 let alone half as active. God Bless

That was added for the second season along with the Pirates' Theme and the little yellow guys' song and dance (which were used to pad out every single episode) IIRC.  I know when the show first started, it had an English version of the French theme.

I'm sure that you are hip to this, but just in case... You do know that there is a sequel to The Shattered World? The Sundered Realm, to be precise. For Reaves at his most subversive, ya gotta go with the Kamus of Khadizar stuff, pretty much Philip Marlowe in the world of Elric or Corum. Fun stuff.

Speaking of weird and obscure early 90s animation, there was an MTV series called The Brothers Grunt that I gave one episode of my life to before I tapped the fuck out. Pretty sure it premiered not more than six months after Beavis and Butthead debuted. Back then it seemed Liquid Television was the go to for weird animation. Can't remember the number of Saturday nights I spent watching that while babysitting my niece while my sister and brother in law were out at the bar.

Wikipedia to the rescue!

I thought that sounded familiar, but it turns out all I really remember of the Grunt show was the promo that was tangentially related to it, where the MTV logo is the turd in the porcelain punchbowl.

It does make "Hey, let's make 4 long-ass movies based off of an amusement park ride" sound considerably less insane (though no less stupid).

How does CBS All Access work? If I do the free trial, can I burn through the new Twilight Zone episodes, or are they being the anti-Netflix and releasing new episodes a week at a time because "lol CBS"?

The first appearance of the Brothers Grunt was in this MTV bumper.

I have no idea who decided that an animated short that seemed to depict constipated men attempting to take a shit needed to be expanded into a full series.

This got a run with full 30 minute episodes, but nothing for Steve & Zoya or The Specialists...

Oh, well. At least I got one season of Downtown, Daria spun off from Beavis & Butthead, and I also got a few episodes of The Maxx.

Daria fucking ruled but it was total fantasy.  There were certainly no art class girls as hot or as smart as Jane Lane was when I was in High School.

The only thing I remember about MTV animation shows is watching Aeon Flux reruns in the early 2000s as a preteen and being really confused.

It was pretty mindblowing at the time for there to be a story that featured a main character that died repeatedly and constantly failed in her missions.

Not surprising that the show's creator, Peter Chung, said that the flow of the Wile E. Coyote / Road Runner cartoons was a big influence on his ideas about how Aeon Fluxx should work as a concept.
