I think I first heard Ice-T say it, but it's 100% true.Β  Country music and hip-hop serve the exact same purpose for the exact same people on the exact opposite side of the black/white spectrum.Β Β

The Johnny Cash is the grandfather of rap argument. πŸ˜€

As someone who grew up in a broke ass part of rural Ohio, I have seen with my own eyes that once you flatten out the economics, we are not very different.Β  For a certain group of white people, Johnny Cash is 2pac in a black suit.Β Β

I don’t disagree with the premise.

i mean, what is Folsom Prison Blues? The guy took some Coke, shot his old lady, went on the lam and then went to prison,Β

I thought he was already dead. That was literally what I just said out loud regarding it.Β

It sucks that he had Johnny Rebel's work attributed to him. You can do your own research on that matter.Β

RIP

Clarence Carter is Strokin' in heaven now

I've known who Clarence Carter was as long as I can remember, but for whatever reason, I assumed he was dead the entire time.Β  Backdoor Santa is one of my favorite Christmas songs.Β  It's right up there with the Temptations version of Silent Night and B.B. King's Merry Christmas, Baby.

And a related question, are we just done with blind musicians?Β  I feel like we had a hell of a run between Ray Charles, Clarence Carter, Jose Feliciano, Andrea Bocelli, and Stevie Wonder, but no one since.Β Β

Count me among those who thought Clarence Carter died decades ago.

You might have Carter confused with the Big Man, Clarence Clemons. It confused me for a hot moment too.

For me, I think he just seemed like old blues man, and might as well have been Robert Johnson or someone.Β  I only knew him from old songs.Β  I don't think I've ever seen him perform or on TV outside of one of those, "Buy this collection of old blues songs from Time Life," commercials.Β Β

Rob Base was 59.

True story: their agent lived in my old building for years when I was a kid, so they would drop in every now and then. He also handled Kid 'n Play along with 1-2 other acts that never panned out, so we'd have quite the eclectic group of folks swinging by.

One of my favorite sports fan moments was at a Yankees doubleheader back in 1996 where the Yankees won Game 1, so of course they played Sinatra's "New York, New York." 50,000 fans singing along with Frank is already awesome to begin with, but since it was a doubleheader, the PA then swung into "It Takes Two..." and David Cone walked out to warm up right as Rob hit "cuz I'm the leader, the man superior... I take care a'ya and then ya get wearier." Goosebumps to this day. RIP.

It Takes Two came up on my commute last week, and it's an absolute perfect rap song.Β  There is nothing that needs to be added, there is nothing you'd want to remove.Β  It's just an undeniable break from a Lyn Collins song and a rapper who absolutely understands the assignment.Β  Rob Base was a mortal man who created an immortal piece of hip-hop, R.I.P.Β

You know if Raven had gone with a 90's big hat country persona instead of grunge...

Now I'm hearing "What about me?Β  What about Raven?" sung with a twangy voice.Β  Thanks for that.

On the one hand: depressing. OTOH: that is one banger of a jam session they're all having upstairs. RIP Sonny.

Dexter Wansel one of the architects of the Philly Soul Sound has died at the age of 75.Β  This is one of the coldest drum breaks of all time and an absolute banger of an insturmental song.Β
