Curt McGirt Posted September 1, 2014 Author Posted September 1, 2014 Jingus is right, there is absolutely nothing pleasant about any of the sex/rape scenes in Urotsukidoji, not even when I was a curious teenager buying it. It's just the most fucked up, apocalyptic, horrifying film ever. I mean, there's a scene with a guy murdering his own parents, cutting his dick off, and putting on an alien one to turn into a crazy alien rapist/murderer (as far as I can recall, still haven't watched it again yet). There is nothing remotely sexually appealing about that film, it's just nuts. Also remarkably well made and written despite all that. At the same time, I think the Maniac remake was more disturbing than Urotsukidoji. At least that has the element of foreignness and animation to it. I live in a college town and I could see Frodo creeping up in the backstreets anytime.
J.T. Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 I think Martyrs is better than all those. It's probably my favorite of the French Extreme. Inside is probably my favorite French Extreme, but Martyr(s) is a close second. As Above, So Below was very eh.. Build up was great but ending was very disappointing. I am actually stoked for No Good Deed on September 12th.
glfpunk Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 I'm pretty pumped, Halloween is probably my favorite time of year and I'm looking forward to it more now since my son was born on Halloween last year.
J.T. Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 I'm pretty pumped, Halloween is probably my favorite time of year and I'm looking forward to it more now since my son was born on Halloween last year. Holy crap, dude. You never mentioned this in the DAD Zone or Good Times threads or if you did, I totally missed it. Belated congratulations and and early Happy Birthday to the young 'un.
glfpunk Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Thanks man, it's been a busy handful with two little ones so close together, I can't remember if I posted it or not. His birthdays are going to be easy though! Costume party for sure.
DEAN Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Please note that glfpunk, my younger brother and I spent a lot of Labor Day trying to list every starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. It is an amazing list. And obviously glfpunk's younguns are totally adorable. 1
J.T. Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 There is another movie whose title escapes me right now but it is pretty much a feminist revenge fantasy about a bunch of men trapped in a building being hunted down by mutated or deminically possesed women. I think it has been on either IFC or Sundance recently. Why in the hell did it take me so long to remember that the title of this movie is DOGHOUSE~!? Doghouse is dumb and the jokes are very misogynistic, but at least this Brit horror/comedy isn't as mind numbingly stupid as The Lesbian Vampire Killers or Evil Aliens. Emily Booth appears to be the Queen of UK Horror Comedy.
S.K.o.S. Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Not to be a tease, but I watched a horror movie a few months ago that was pretty good and has apparently never been mentioned on this board. I'm saving it for Halloween Havoc.
J.T. Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Something I haven't mentioned? I am intrigued!
S.K.o.S. Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Well, actually, we had that board crash... so I just know that it hasn't been mentioned since July 2013.
piranesi Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Does anyone here have the 2013 F13th Blu Ray set? I'm thinking of splurging on either that of the Halloween set coming out this month, but I'd like to hear what the horror hounds here think of the F13 set before I jump.
Curt McGirt Posted September 5, 2014 Author Posted September 5, 2014 Personally, I wouldn't do it unless the assholes at Paramount put back in all the edited gore.
Jingus Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Personally, I wouldn't do it unless the assholes at Paramount put back in all the edited gore. Whoa huh what? Clarify please, that's the first I've heard about that.
Jingus Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Lesbian Vampire Killers I actually kinda liked that one. As stupidly cheesy as it was, it was trying pretty hard to be deconstructive, and that always wins points with me.
Curt McGirt Posted September 6, 2014 Author Posted September 6, 2014 I too enjoyed Lesbian Vampire Killers. It was charmingly innocent for what you thought it might be. Paramount has all the edited footage and showed it in a separate doc segment on I think the last boxset. They could easily reinsert those to the actual films but have chosen not to. You now have permission to start throwing things.
Curt McGirt Posted September 7, 2014 Author Posted September 7, 2014 The OG Salem's Lot miniseries was/is on Encore right now and you should really either revisit it or watch it for the first time. Probably the only time Hammer horror has ever reached these shores, and on a far more personal basis. Plus, if you've ever seen Fright Night and love it, you owe it to yourself.
HumanChessgame Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 I've got Salem's Lot on VHS and might pop it in to pass the time at work tomorrow night. Mason was great in the lead and as campy as the movie was at times, they really got a lot of the eerie atmosphere down in a few key scenes. That reminds me how the Jerusalem's Lot novella is one of my most-wanted film adaptations.
Niners Fan in CT Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 Why the hell would you edit gore out of Friday the 13th? I have the DVD boxset and when I say it's bare bones, that's giving it too much credit. I regret that purchase.
Curt McGirt Posted September 7, 2014 Author Posted September 7, 2014 I'm talking about the stuff that Paramount initially took out due to MPAA bitching and moaning, and their own self-censorship. Which can't be much, but hell, anything's better than what's already there.
J.T. Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 I loved the original Salem's Lot miniseries, but I also love the novel and the snaggletooth horror in the miniseries was not the real Barlow..
New Blood Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 I've seen a few horror films the last couple weeks and will be going head on next week: The Mummy [1932] - This was really quite fun and I love the atmosphere in this. I'd love to see Hammer's version of this film which I heard was better. Oculus [2014] - I usually love haunted house films, well as long as they're period films like The Conjuring, but I wasn't so sure when watching the first half hour of this. I usually don't care about the whole modern 'ghost hunting' type gimmick but this got better as the plot unfolded. Although I do wish it would've been more vague whether the mirror was haunted or the characters were just mentally ill. Other than that, I had a good time watching this. Graduation Day [1981] - This is your standard early 80s slasher film. While it's definitely not remarkable or intelligent but a good time was had while watching this. This would be a fun film to show at parties. I had seen quite a few clips from this from various documentaries about horror and slasher films. IMDB summary: After a high school track runner, named Laura, suddenly dies from a heart attack after finishing a 30-second 200-meter race, a killer wearing a sweat suit and a fencing mask begins killing off her friends on the school track team one by one. The suspects include the track coach Michaels, Laura's sister Anne who arrives in town for the funeral, the creepy school principal Mr. Guglione, and Laura's strange boyfriend Kevin. Next up is BLOOD RAGE [1987].
Lawful Metal Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Just watched Lifeforce (1985). That one is ripe for a remake -- it's mythology is confusing but surprisingly solid. On the other hand, I don't think you're going to top Mathilda May. The tone of the film is so weird -- I don't know how to describe it. But it is definitely unsettling. Also -- I can't believe that came out in 1985. It looks so late 70s.
Curt McGirt Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 Lifeforce is very similar in tone/inspiration to the Hammer Quatermass films... at least until the zombie apocalypse part, which is loopy even for that film.
J.T. Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Wait a minute. Lifeforce was a horror movie? I thought it was just about Mathida May being naked?
Curt McGirt Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 I certainly thought that when I was a kid. Had a copy of the Cinefantastique issue with the Lifeforce cover story and it ended up being kept in my friend's treehouse/fort like it was a porno mag, around the same time he ended up finding a bunch of "woods porn" and stashed that in there too.
