APRIL 2018 MOVIE DISCUSSION

This really probably falls under the "surprising casting" but

I posted the trailer for The House with a Clock in its Walls in the Upcoming Movie Thread.

When I glanced at the casting I was like "Cool! Colleen Camp is in it!"

Colleen Camp was Kirkland in the Police Academy movies (along with a billion other things) - but that is the frame of reference for this story.

Somehow - I never ever realized that Camp was Yvette in Clue (and Clue is one of my all time favorite movies)

This fucking floored me

Of course - now as the week goes on I have been like "I am pretty sure I have had this discovery before".

This is my way of saying I have a head injury... or am really stupid.

You were understandably staring so much at her French maid outfit cleavage that it did not dawn on you who she was.

I personally totally brain farted that she was in Game of Death , Valley Girl, and Apocalypse Now.

Ready Player One is shockingly good... or even great? (I gotta see it again when it comes out on digital to really know.)

I came in with low expectations (warned by people who actually read the book), and am still surprised just how good it is. Like, they totally know the shitshow they were getting into so embraced it whole-heartedly. Really, I can't ask for more.

Afterwards, my friend told me that they optioned the rights before the book was even out... I think that may have saved the movie since they cut out so much fat that was in the book.

The only even remotely interesting thing in RPO was the

Spoiler

The Shining setpiece.

Aech's "reveal" was easily guessed from the beginning.

They wasted Sorrento's avatar being Clark Kent by never having him think he was the "real" savior of the Oasis.

They have drones lining up to play every single 2600 game, one by one on a TV, but in 5 years NO ONE has thought "It'll be a fucking laugh if I drive backwards into the wall of this race"?

How did no TV references make it into the movie?  The General Lee, The A-Team van, Airwolf, and Automan probably all should have been in the race at the very least.

I'm still not cool with how they used The Iron Giant as a weapon.  Could've been any other giant robot/power rangers mecha

Considering the very reason Iron Giant was in it was because they couldn't get the rights to Ultraman... I think that says they thought all the giant robot/power rangers mecha were interchangeable

They were wrong.  Shoulda gone for another mecha like Giant Robo or maybe tried to license the Gears from Xenosaga if they wanted to be nerd current and gamer trendy.

The Iron Giant is definitely iconic, but it doesn't sound like they used him the right way.

My head cannon is the race solution was a Big Rigs nod :D

Well... he essentially is in the movie?

Spoiler

He was being piloted;i.e. he was a car/tank/gun/etc.

In a world where people are role-playing with the skin of their favorite characters doing non-canon shit... why even bother? Like I can say why didn't the Delorean time travel once it reached 88mph? Why was Battleborn representatives even there? WTF was Ryu driving?!

Even while being piloted, Iron Giant ended up fulfilling a similar role he did in his movie!

I'm totally not going to get any of this when I see the movie later this week, but you guys won't steal my joy.

Just sit down with that tub of popcorn and embrace the cheese; you'll enjoy it more. Really goes for most things in life.

EDIT: The couple of fantastic trailers we lucked out to have really helped set the mood too!

Just the other day I took my girls to see READY PLAYER ONE and it was a lot of fun. They didn't get a lot of the 80s pop culture references, but it didn't really matter: the story was very good.

And am I getting old, but did this movie swear a lot for a PG-13 film? I don't want to become one of those parents, but they said shit about 50 times and a very dramatic F-Bomb, too.

IIRC it's actually in the MPAA Rating code that a PG-13 can only have one F-Bomb drop and still be considered to be PG-13.

It is an urban legend that Samuel L. Jackson has it written in his contracts that if an F-Bomb gets dropped in a PG-13 movie he's in the cast of, he gets to be the one to drop it.

Yeah - that has always been the word on the street that you can drop one "Fuck" and still be PG-13. To Marty's point - with no actual data to back it up - I believe they allow way more swearing to fly in PG-13 movies now (and violence. Sex is still the thing that is super super taboo)

I mean - there is now swearing on TV. It is still weird to me to be watching a movie on FX or FXX at like 7 pm and them not bleeping "shit" out

Ready Player One...I really wanted to love it.  Something about it just rang hollow to me.

I enjoyed the action for what it was.  The movie is a pretty standard paint by the numbers Spielberg movie and is probably an improvement from the book.  But it felt like there wasn't much heart to it.  I loved seeing all these incredible characters from things I loved doing all sorts of things I didn't think I'd ever see them do, but after a while it's just...  there.

Sorrento felt like he was a step off of being a truly great villain.  And I'll echo what was said earlier in that it was a missed opportunity to make him Clark Kent and not have him think he's the true savior of the Oasis. Instead making him a corporate, weak weasel... just seemed like Spielberg was holding him back.  Like, he wasn't a BIG enough evil in this world of infinite possibilities.

I felt they missed a lot of good opportunites, by never mentioning Aech's orientation (as the book does), by never putting Wade in school, or mentioning his weight (he was overweight in the book, then had to workout to slim down and be a better Oasis player).   He explicitly states his motivation is the money at first, and later he sort of leaps to "well we want to control the Oasis to make sure IOI doesn't", which, really isn't THAT noble.

I'm not sure, I'm really conflicted.  I definitely liked it, but it was fraught with issues.

As to the swearing in TV, if it's not a broadcast network (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, The CW, MyNetwork) channels can allow whatever they want.  Even though nobody thinks about it anymore, you are paying for all those cable channels, and thus are making a choice to be able to watch them, so the FCC has no purveiw over their content.  As long as their advertisers are happy, they could run hardcore pornography on Sunday morning without repercussions.

It's definitely not a hard and fast rule. They made Daredevil cut "I want a fucking costume" to get the PG-13 but Rent managed to get away with two instances of "fucking"

Exactly.  Cursing has technically always been allowed on basic cable, it's just that nobody really did it much until recently.

A Quiet Place is the movie of the year. An amazing theatre experience & so much tension. Over delivered big time.

I'm glad to hear this.  I'm going to try to check this out very soon and review it for the Horror Movie Thread.
