The ComingToAmerica Comes to America Thread

For better or worse, the parade is scheduled for November.

If I'm going to DC, then it pretty much is then so it is what it is. It seems like I'm getting the folksy version in Athens, Washington does look like it will be incredibly busy but I'm sure NYC will be no picnic that week either.

Chicago next week.

I'm thinking about food i.e. pizza pie, hot dog, Italian Beef Sandwiches and Harold's Chicken.

I definitely need to do daily squats/pushups.

So Seattle after Chi-town, is that right? As to the Portland/Seattle thing, the one reason to visit Portland for something they have that Seattle doesn't is Powell's Bookstore. If you're not a book person, forget the whole deal, but if you are, you will be blown away by Powell's. It's basically a full city block of bookstore, you can lose yourself there for hours.

Sounds cool, but I have my accomodation in Seattle and doubt I'll do a day trip.

But yeah Chicago-Seattle-LA-NOLA-ATL-Athens-DC-NYC is broadly the plan.

Not really worth the day trip. Things in Seattle to do and not do.

To do: The Pike Place Market have a bowl of World Class Chili and some fried chicken gizzards, trust me on this, you'll love it.

Since you're already there at the PPM, take a long stroll along the waterfront and just check things out.

The International District, do not miss this, a once-in-a-lifetime chance to have authentic Asian dishes. You know you're in the right place when the chefs at other Asian restaurants eat there... And there are over a dozen places that fit that description. Very simple, look in the window, if the clientele is mostly Asian, probably cool, if not avoid like the plague. Seattle has shitty Asian restaurants too.

The Experience Music Project. Simply stated, do not miss this.

Do you play darts? If so, go to the Knarr Tavern on Friday night and play in the tournament. With your Brit accent, you'll be macking like a mofo with all the college girls that hang out there.

To Not Do: The Space Needle. I am proud to say that I lived in Seattle for fifty years and never went up in the damn thing. Yeah, the view is cool, but you can get the same from the Smith Tower in Pioneer Square. The restaurant is overpriced and atrocious, quite simply the biggest tourist trap that Seattle has to offer.

Bruce Lee's grave & Jimi Hendrix's grave. Yes, they were great; yes, they are still dead, nothing to see here, let's move along, please.

Got my flight to Chicago, 7 nights in Chicago, train to Seattle, 6 nights in Seattle, train to LA.

Accommodation in LA is next; how long to stay is the next question. Followed by where next.

When are you going to be in Seattle?

Hahahaha, I wish I played darts now lol. It's actually shutdown though now. I like your thinking though.

Food tips sound great there; I think I'll be eating a lot of gizzards on this trip.

What's that Midwest beer that I liked... (Forgive me, it's been nearly thirty years since I had a drink...) Oh, yeah! Shiner Bock! No idea if they still make it or not, but I rather enjoyed it on trips to the Midwest. Another thing I dug that you can get nowhere else in the world was fish n' chips made with walleye, it's a sort of weird combo of a pike and a perch and just delicious.

Plane touched down on time, but it took an age to get to the gate. L is pretty fucking raggety I have to say; I'd have probably got a taxi if I'd known it was going to take that long. Extra slim escalator at my station.

Whole Foods is pricey imho......except for the bar which was pretty good and had great offers. I asked the bar guy about tipping; the beer was $2.25 so I offered a buck and he said that was great. A further beer yielded my pocket change which he acted very happy with. I asked at the bar if the road I was considering walking down to get to Pequod's  was safe - couple of ppl said I'd be fine so the adventure was set. The bar yielded

I watched 'Enough Said' (the Gandolfini/Louis-Dreyfus) and they talked about the Container Store, and there it was! Hilarious. Also really cool/odd having these wooden houses just opposite.

My place is underneath the L, but I'm not a light sleeper fortunately.  But my rhythms are all over the place. Time to go explore I guess.

Amtrak vaguely behaving, May 3. Leaving morning of May 9.

Well unfortunately doesn't look like there's a lot happening during that week. There are some Mariners games if you're into baseball, and a Sounders game if soccer is your thing. I'll second what OSJ said about EMP but it has the much more hideous name Museum of Pop Culture now (or *shudders* MoPop for short). Definitely take in the Pike Place Market too. Just be warned you'll probably see some homeless meth user walking around with his pants down (a friend of mine literally saw that exact thing a few weeks ago). If you're into rock Papa Roach, Morbid Angel and Puddle of Mudd are playing shows while you're here.  There's an indie game festival on the 5th if you're a gamer. Otherwise there's the usual touristy stuff. The Seattle walking underground tour is pretty neat, and only takes a couple of hours. The zoo is pretty decent too, they've remodeled it since the last time I was there but you can easily spend half a day there. There's also a small aquarium and a Seattle harbor tour with Argosy Cruises which can both kill a couple hours each. While you're in Seattle you have to get a burger from Dick's. It's an institution around here. Hope you have a good time. Seattle's a great place if you can past all the hipsters, social justice warriors and zombies (we've got a pretty bad heroin and meth problem around here right now).

Let me second the love for Dick's! You need a Dick's Deluxe and two orders of fries for the perfect gutbuster of a meal. And don't forget Totem House Fish n' Chips by the Ballard locks. The locks themselves are pretty cool to watch the boats go through. Damn I miss Dick's, fuck a bunch of Lotta Burger (the local institution).

Two orders of fries! One isn't sufficient. Oh, and try tartar sauce on the fries, it's a Northwest thing. People will give you odd looks if you request it anywhere else in the country. I even had a waitress say "Why foooah y'all want to do that?" when I ordered same in Dallas.

Some of the fritkots in Brussels make their own tartare sauce for fries, so it is completely legit. Infact, at Maison Antoine it's the only non-amateur move.

You can prolly tell I know fries.

In Belgium, putting ketchup on your fries is not much better than ketchup on a Chicago Hot Dog (though in practice, that is offered. One place sells a Trump Dog - burnt with ketchup and mayo). I had ketchup with fries tonight though and it was good - I think they need to be skin on for it to really work.

I've heard that in Belgium mayonnaise on fries is a thing... Sounds absolutely ghastly to me, but tastes differ. All of my suggestions for a Trump Dog would wind up being inedible to all but the truly starving.

People eat fries with other condiments that aren't ranch?

Give me fries with tartar sauce or give me death! Matter of fact, dinner tomorrow will consist of butterflied salt & pepper shrimp loaded with Sriracha and  a drop or two of Da Bomb Beyond Insanity as an additive. And let's not forget the home made fries (with homemade tartar sauce, of course! So, so good... Oh yeah, I think we have some clams to deep fry as well. I originally thought that the deep fryer was going to turn out to be a waste of money, but it has proven itself over and over as a vital part of our kitchen equipment. Best of all, Kathy claims that I make a big mess whenever I utilize the deep fryer (how do you not make a mess when you're tossing ice-cold battered shrimp into hot oil I ask?);  so the end result is that I stand around and provide guidance and inspiration without actually having to do anything except perform the always necessary taste testing! Life  is good.

It's been a lot of fun so far, suffice it to say. I am amazed I am functioning on so little sleep.

48 hours left in Chicago. Spent the morning at the Bahá'í temple in Linden, and checked out Lake Michigan. Off to Wrigley for an innings or two on the big screen.

My mother used to take me with her to that temple sometimes. As a kid I didn't realize what an amazing and unique building it is.

I was at a club night called 'Porn and Chicken' last night. Porn had a dinosaur theme, but the chicken wings were best I ever had and I am not sure it's close.

I'll take "Things I wish I could Google at work" for $600, Alex.  And yes, I'm sure it's just a name.  But with a title like that you can't go wrong.

And you folks have convinced me to try fries with mayo, ranch dressing and especially tartar sauce.  I'll have to give these a try next time I have fries.
