I'd say while there have been Time Ladies for decades, the idea of potential gender swapping only goes back canonically (I think) to Gaimans first episode for Matt Smith.

Of course, probably safe to say, generally speaking, Who fans might be more accepting of change than Bond fans.

There have been nine James Bonds (including the three from Casino Royale slapstick thing) and thirteen "official" Doctors.  None of them have been ethnic and only one has been a woman.

I'd say they were roughly equally resistant to change, but Whovians to their credit were ready to embrace change when it actually happened.

Of course folks would accept Bernie Casey. Or else. :)

That would've been the best time for a spin-off franchise.

We're never getting Idris Elba right?

He's 45.  So...no.

How about let's let Daniel Craig finish the role and give the man some respect before start fan-casting the role like stupid European betting websites that are hot garbage.

Its interesting listening to the James Bonding podcast, especially this week as they re-reviewed Spectre and went over things that seemed awesome in draft 1 before they got dropped for draft 2 that led to Purvis/Wade coming to re-write everything (apparently drat 1 & 2 didn't have the Bond/Oberhauser connection and made Blofeld an African Warlord). I'm hopeful for Boyle to deliver something different . I swear if EON bought on Boyle to give "BOND GOES ROGUE AGAIN!" I'm gonna fuckin scream!

Why re-image Blofeld to be African?  Why not re-import and update Dr. Kananga?

I'd lose my shit if they cast Idris Elba as Dr. Kananga and sent him off on some scheme to control the OAU and set himself up as the de-facto leader of the continent under the guise of a seemingly benevolent anti-colonialist billionaire.

You could even keep Kananga's former drug dealer portfolio and make his company a Pan-African pharma giant that developed a cure for Ebola and that's what gives Kananga his geo-political street cred..

The plot writes itself.  Too bad that the some of the locations I'd like to see this dream movie shot have nuclear hot political climates.  I guess we'd be shooting the Kenya live shots in New Zealand.

Wouldn't that be labeled as stereotypical, problematic and racist in this day and age?

If Takashi Miike can shoot a movie in Kenya, I think Danny Boyle should be able to.

A location scout was gunned down in Mexico while scouting for this upcoming season of Narcos...they preceded as normal.

Just mind your p's and q's and you'll be good.

How so?

It would be no more of a cautionary tale about the perils in placing your trust in a benevolent strongman than we've already seen in African politics whether it be Jacob Zuma's corrupt regime resting on the laurels of Mandela or Robert Mugabe's dramatic fall from grace or what have you.

It would only be racist if Kananga today were treated like the blaxploitation comic book villain caricature from LIve & Let Die.

My re-imaged Dr. Kananga wouldn't have the Caribbean voodoo trappings, so no Baron Samedi.

I think I would have some sort of Al-Shabab angle that would probably get me shot and give Kananaga some sort of paramilitary force masquerading as a terrorist organization that would go around causing mayhem and destabilizing governments to the point that they would be eager to take the carrots offered by Dr. Kananga.  The leader of the paramilitary group would be one of Kananga's henchmen.

Could you not swap Caribbean voodoo priest for (for lack of a better term) African witch doctor? Or at least someone who plays with the trappings of one?

I think that would be pushing into the realms of racism that Vile One mentioned earlier since not all African tribal / shamanistic traditions are created equal.

I suppose you could make Kananga's paramilitary group use some sort of death cult persona as a cover (still might earn you the scorn of Al-Shabaab) and make the leader assume the role of a spiritual leader who thinks he's the avatar of Gaunab, Adro, or maybe Yeban.

I'd love to bring in Solitaire as Bond's love interest, but I think her gimmick would also be tricky to import.

I was thinking of someone like the Teen Titans villain Houngan, who is using super science disguised as magic for his gimmick. (As we know, a favorite trope of mine) a guy exploiting the stereotype, etc. And yes, he is a voodoo guy but again, you could transpose.

Super Science you say?

I think Live and Let Die wouldn't be quite so racist if it didn't strongly imply every single black person in both Louisiana and Harlem are part of the drug trade of Kanaga.

It's a shame how problematic that movie is, because Bond bring thoroughly outsmarted by a black man should've been a big deal. Abd Christ, Kotto was fucking great in the roles.

Which is why I think a modern reboot with my story line and Elba as Dr. Kananga  would be fucking boss in this day and age.

Yes to all those.

Everything you need to know about You Only Live Twice's racism and misogyny is that Austin Powers used a line word for word in a nearly identical context as a joke about racism and misogyny.

If we're going to wipe away the overt racism of the Bond franchise shouldn't we remake "You Only Live Twice" first?

James

What Odessa said.  First we remake Dr. No and then we move on Live & Let Die.

Read Fleming's original novel. A few pages in and there's mentions of the Japs, Chinamen, and Negroes (and Mr. Big's car being driven by a Negroess). The novel is still pretty bad ass though, way better than anything in the film.

Oh I'm aware of how racist the book is.

Roger Moore was 46 when Live and Let Die came out. Just saying.

I think Moore has his good movies and his bad ones. Live & Let Die is a good one and The Spy Who Loved Me. I think For Your Eyes Only is criminally underrated. I mean fuck can you really say Connerey wasn't awful in Diamonds Are Forever or that Thunderball might benefit from beign maybe 20-30 minuts shorter?

I think my major regret is that Lazenby quit before he could really grow into the roll. If nothing else he wasn't afraid of decent stunt work (the belly slide with machinegun at Piz Gloria is probably a top 3 action/stunt for me)

Lazenby was great, he just had the unfortunate circumstance of following Connery with a Bond with a really depressing ending.  Moore got away with it since Live and Let Die followed the standard formula.  I would've loved to see how Lazenby handled the rightously pissed and looking for revenge Bond in Diamonds.
