Awwwwwwwwwww yeah. For me, this the card I've looked forward to the most. I fucking love Stipe and JJ. So many other fights on the main card and FX prelims that I'm looking forward to as well.

Based on her performance against Angela Hill, I think Jessica Andrade has a legit chance to beat Joanna. Joanna has to keep Andrade off of her, and that's going to be extremely hard for at least the first two rounds IMO. I think if Joanna had a slick submission game or had a bit more power, she could probably catch Andrade or keep her honest. On the other hand, Andrade did want to exchange with Angela Hill because she really didn't fear her power.  That's Joanna's best chance at winning this fight. Being overzealous has cost Andrade in the past when she was at 135. In the center of the cage, she shouldn't be trying to go tit-for-tat with Joanna. She has the obvious strength advantage, and she should take down Joanna rinse and repeat near or against the cage.

Well, I suppose that monkeys have a legit chance to fly out of my ass, but I certainly wouldn't bet that way. The bottom line is that if your strategy depends on getting your opponent down, it also means that you're getting close enough to get hit and hit hard. That's exactly what JJ does so well, she beats the shit out of people and I expect that she'll do the same to Andrade as she has to everyone else. Girl is a fucking warrior.

The thing is Jessica really hasn't had any resistance when it comes to take people down. That's kinda scary for someone who has only fought the tippity top strawweights since she got to 115. Calderwood and Angela Hill are great strikers, and she had very little trouble dealing with them. Joanna has pretty good takedown defense, but at the same time she really hasn't dealt with anyone that strong. Claudia is close, but she expends so much energy trying to do a lot of those things.  What can Joanna do against someone who can keep her down for 15-20 minutes? Against someone like Gadelha who is going to gas her arms just trying to do that 1-2 minutes, yeah she is going to wear them out. Andrade seems to have no trouble replicating what she did in round 1 in round 3. It's not the championship rounds, but if she can pressure Joanna for that long, I don't see how she can't win.

I think the close betting odds reflects that idea. Joanna right now, according to Best Fight Odds, is sitting at  -165.  That's the closest odds she had since she became champ.

A very logical, cogent argument... I just happen to disagree due to one little detail... JJ is the Champion, champions are champions because they find ways to win when the task seems insurmountable. I don't dispute for a second that Jessica is better than just about anyone that JJ has fought and she's likely a bit stronger. Funny thing about strength, it doesn't help you when your face is getting turned into mush. Many years ago, some buddies and I were hanging out drinking with a guy who used to be a sparring partner for Danny "Little Red" Lopez, one thing led to another and we wound up at a gym putting the gloves on just to see what it would be like boxing with a world class opponent (sorry, the dude's name escapes now, it's been damn near forty years). Anyway, at first I demurred, because after all, I am a natural heavyweight and could bench-press two of this guy at a time, he insisted, so it was on... For all of one round... I have never been hit that hard that many times in my life and I've been in a few scraps in younger days, I outweighed this guy by close to 100 pounds and he beat the ever-loving fuck out of me. Yeah, I could blow him away on lifting and probably could have outrun him in a distance race, but getting hit in the face HURTS, it HURTS A LOT.

JJ might not be as strong as Jessica, but I don't fancy Jessica's chances once those bombs start landing.

I'm not saying Joanna lacks heart or anything, but she really hasn't had to win anything but a volume striking fight. In those fights, I doubt anyone right now at 115 is going to beat her short of someone like Jemyma Betrian coming to the US and becoming a full time MMA fighter. However, Joanna has shown a willingness to just wait until she gets that opportunity to finally get away from a clinch against the cage to get going. In a fight where that's possible? Do that if you can. However, it's a very flawed strategy that I think cost someone like Anthony Pettis and others their belt. Someone like Pettis at his height has submission skills and some power to at least make people be cautious in other areas. If Andrade is tossing her to ground at will, what does Joanna do to get past that obstacle? I would say Angela Hill has a little bit more power than Joanna (doesn't have the technique admittedly), and Jessica ate all those strikes like it wasn't anything. I think the end of the Karolina fight showed that Joanna can get cracked as well. So while Joanna will have the obvious speed and skill advantage striking, she is probably at the some disadvantage because Andrade has natural power that someone like Karolina isn't blessed w/ just due to size and previous history up two weight classes. I think for Joanna to win this fight, she is going to have to show new wrinkles to her game she hasn't had to show any point and time. Again, I think Joanna's best bet is Jessica getting overzealous and walking into a few shots while she is cold. However, Joanna is a slow starter and probably won't pressure Jessica in the same way Jessica is likely to pressure her.

If anyone has any thoughts on Alvarez-Poirier, I'd like to hear them.

It should be a great fight, and it's probably Poirier's shot to get the biggest win of his career based on the style matchup.

I somehow missed it. Thanks for pointing out my error. An entertaining fight with the two involved, touch wood.

Just to "me too", styles make fights as my buddy CM at Wrestling Classics is fond of saying. This fight on paper looks like an awful outing for Alvarez, and don't get me wrong, I like Alvarez a lot, it's just that Poirier's skill-set is a living nightmare for a guy like him. I look for this to be over in the 2nd.

I think Alvarez is the better pure striker with better boxing and footwork, the loss to McGregor notwithstanding.  I'd say striking has always been an area where Poirier shows his biggest flaws.  Alvarez's problem is probably that he's not afraid to stand and bang instead of using his wrestling more.  Poirier is a very good grappler and submission specialist, but his striking can get very sloppy and tends to show a lot of holes.  I'm leaning toward Alvarez, but I mean Poirier is no joke and tends to be very underrated.  He was legit top 5 at featherweight when he lost to McGregor and dropped down.  He was surging his way through the ranks when he lost to Johnson.  And Johnson is pretty exceptional as well, despite his inconsistency.

The whole reason I lean towards Alvarez is that Poirier is going to falter against guys who bring the same type of power he brings. At 145, you can kinda give him a pass because he was facing Conor and cutting a ton of weight. If you're facing Conor McGregor, you're going need all the punch resistance you can get. At lightweight, it's a much dangerous proposition that you brawl at inopportune times because there are guys with punching power who don't even need to use it all the time. As much as I don't like betting on chins, I still would bet on the more dynamic guy with the shaky chin over the guy who has shown his shaky chin is more susceptible to costing him the fight due to lack of strategy.

Okay, watch how inconsistent I can be... In JJ vs. Jessica, I'm saying the striker takes it from the grappler (I'm also betting on the warrior heart that JJ has). Now for Poirier/Alvarez, I'm going with Poirier because he does exactly the kind of thing that gives Alvarez fits. Styles make fights and his toolset is tailor-made to counter what Alvarez brings to the table. Eddie's going to want to stand there and bang and that's not what's going to happen.

I'm not sure if I would use tailor made. I think what's underrated about Poirier is he can have a well thought out strategy for a Joseph Duffy. The flip side of that is when he doesn't do that, he believes he can fight the same fight against a Bobby Green against someone like Michael Johnson. Thus, it makes a winnable fight against a high caliber opponent even more of a coin flip.

So basically it comes down to which Poirier shows up, clever Poirier who will win or stupid Poirier who will lose. Just for shits and giggles, I'm betting that clever Poirier shows up, but we shall see...

Cejudo vs. Sergio Pettis has been removed from the card due to a hand injury sustained by Cejudo.

Branch vs. Jotko has been moved to the PPV card in its place.

Damn.  Stipe and Junior both seem like good dudes.  No matter who wins, I will be both happy and sad.

Joanna Jędrzejczyk  / Jéssica Andrade should be a fucking war.  Really looking forward to that fight.
