The Comic Book Story of Professional Wrestling: A Hardcore, High-Flying, No-Holds-Barred History of the One True Sport By Aubrey Sitterson and Chris Moreno 170 pgs It's Exactly what is sounds like a graphic novel about this history of our favorite sport. Starts with the carnival origins and covers everything; Chapters on The golddust trio, the NWA, Mexico (even Lucha Underground gets a mention), World of Sport, Japan, the Golden age of WWF, MNW, and finishes with The New Millennium which covers the Benoit tragedy, ROH & TNA, Bryan Danielson winning the world title, The Invasion, and one of the final panels is Kenny Omega winning the IWGP US title in Long Beach, basically ends right before AEW gets going. and the art work I mean look at this There's even a picture of Teddy Hart and his cats in here, so you know the people involved love wrestling. Can't recommend this enough I got this as a Xmas present from my nephew. 1
Peck Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Flight to Vegas Thursday so I stocked up with a few books for the plane. Darsow biography, Marc Mero biography, Shawn Michaels book and one of the Observer Yearbooks I haven't read yet. 2

Curt McGirt Posted January 26 Posted January 26 (edited) If he's gonna put Farmer Burns and Toots Mondt up there he should have squeezed in a Mulkey or Barry Horowitz or something, just to shine a light on the very important job of the jobber. EDIT: You know, speaking of lack of representation, no managers on there either. Not even Bobby? Edited January 26 by Curt McGirt
bobholly138 Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Finished the Stan Frazier book. Not bad but nothing much in it I hadn't read/heard before. Last 20 pages or so is recipes from Tiny.

twiztor Posted February 13 Posted February 13 wait, this is part of a whole series? that sounds amazing. time to add more to my online cart.
SirSmUgly Posted February 24 Posted February 24 (edited) I can report that the pro wrestling comic book is very cool. I'm just through the section on Mexico and am getting to the UK. Big Daddy Crabtree! Haystacks Calhoun! World of Sport! The illustrator is having a lot of fun referencing wrestlers and specific matches or moments, so I'm hoping we get a Catweazle illustration snuck into one of the panels. EDIT: It did give me a happy little kick seeing the illustration of Dario Cueto in his office, so I suppose as with most things, the farther I get from watching Lucha Underground, the more I'll crystallize the stuff about it that I loved and ignore the stuff about it that I didn't. Peck Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Finished both the Marc Mero and Barry Darsow books in the past week. Both were really good reads, Mero's being a little heavier in content especially talking about all the work he does with kids nowadays. Definitely got a little choked up a couple of times reading that one. Darsow's had some great stories growing up in Minnesota with all the Robbinsdale guys and continuing in to his territory and WWF days. I'd recommend both. 1
Cobra Commander Posted February 24 Posted February 24 For all the reasons why the AWA went down, I think people don’t talk enough about how there were a ton of talented wrestlers who were all from Minneapolis in the late 80s and pretty much none of them worked in the AWA except for Curt (whose dad was a local legend) and the Road Warriors for a year. Verne probably lost touch with the sheer about of homegrown talent that he could have had around that time as much as he lost touch with everything else. 3

I could be misrembering or jumbling another story, but wasn't there some sort of huge falling out between Verne and Eddie Sharkey prior to Sharkey becoming the guy that would end up training most of that Robbinsdale crew for wrestling? That might explain why a lot of those folks never ended up in the AWA, and the few that did only ended up there after first starting elsewhere.
odessasteps Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Nord was there at some point, after being in Mid South.

Sharkey reputedly sprayed Gange's office with bullets over a pay dispute.

Mero gets a lifetime free pass from me for how often he showed up at the cancer ward of Egleston Hospital in Atlanta when my best friend's little sister battled leukemia when we were all kids. He never brought cameras or sought any acknowledgement. Just sat all day and talked to the kids. Let them hold the TV Title. Got to interact with him a few times when we were visiting. That's been over 30 years ago and it still stands out in my memory. 5 2

SirSmUgly Posted March 10 Posted March 10 Yeah, that book has been on my radar, and I think I'm just going to grab it now.
