30 years since the Parking Lot Brawl

People talk about the Uncensored match, but people don't talk about the level of violence here with ten less minutes to work with.

Lucia Lee vs Reyne Leverkusen (Lizzy Rain in NXT now)... featuring me in the crowd.

Posted

The Vault posted (some) of the 1984 Parade of Champions today (you can forgive them for not including the Buck Zumhofe match, right?):

so here's the World Class Championship Wrestling episode from April 30th, 1983:

Quote

David and Iceman are wrestling Michael Hayes and Buddy Roberts tonight. Got some words from DVE and Iceman to open the show. The Mongol has a peculiar Mongolian haircut. Chris Adams also has short hair. Mercer decides to use the team "All-English Boy" for Chris Adams. Mongol is Cousin Luke from the 1986 WWF. Chris Adams hits multiple loud Superkicks. Mongol almost launches Chris Adams into the cameraman for an over the top rope DQ. The two other referees run out to separate them. Those "World Class NWA Wrestling" red jackets look nice. Nobody telling Bill Mercer that his name isn't "Chavo Guerrera". Chavo claiming to be born in Mexico City while sounding like the most South Texas man possible (he was born in El Paso). Bill Mercer attended a Mexican rodeo once. We got SPANISH graphics for this Chavo Guerrero vs Jimmy Garvin match. Or as Bill Mercer calls him "Jim Gahvin". Marc Lowrance doing ring announcing with headphones on. David Von Erich recently won the Texas title and spanked Sunshine too. That's a scene for the 700 Club crowd watching World Class. Chavo with dropkicks and a headscissors and Jimmy Garvin is fired up on the outside. Marc Lowrance, stop trying to check out Sunshine on the outside. We need more heels in 2026 who don't have an indoors voice and yell during matches. Jimmy selling a headscissors like his head is about to pop (Chavo standing with his ankles around Jimmy's head). Jimmy getting a bleep while selling a surfboard move. Chavo with some good left hands. We got a time limit draw but this was a fun match. Hey they had a lady ringside reporter in World Class (Monica Hunter). Kamala takes on two dudes. Arman Hussein is managing the dudes wrestling Kamala. The two guys wrestling Kamala: Tom Renesto Jr and Bill Rathke. This is an incredible number of dudes at ringside for a Kamala handicap squash. Kamala pins Rathke with two splashes but this match will continue until Renesto gets splashed and pinned too. These guys were Arman Hussein's two best? is he managing the 1997 Teddy Long WCW stable? Jimmy Garvin and Sunshine are at ringside for the main event. The fans are chanting "Go Home Freebirds". Sunshine is gonna take pictures of this bout which feels like a gimmick they could do these days (at least until the smartphone is accidentally dropped and broken). Great hairstyle matchup between Buddy Roberts and Iceman King Parsons. Turns out Hayes and Iceman is a fun matchup too. Sunshine operating a tiny video camera at ringside. Things devolve into chaos. David is knocked to the floor. Garvin hits David with the camera on the floor. Hayes gets David back in the ring and pins him. Evil prevails this week on World Class. Next week: Kerry, Iceman, and Chavo take on the Freebirds in a Penalty Box match.

Buddy Roberts, Iceman King Parsons, and Jimmy Garvin being three guys whose stock soared with me once I watched some 1983ish World Class a few years ago

I’m sure there’s something interesting in the Brock Lesnar found footage video on the Vault but there are jokes of questionable taste that come to mind.

so here’s a surprisingly great WCW match instead

Hak was in great shape during this run and should have anchored their hardcore division.

So of course, Nash and Bischoff had Brian Knob(b)s anchor it instead. And they had Hak get embarrassed by babyface commentator Eric Bischoff on top of it.

Best of The WWF Vol. 19:

One of my favorite Colosseum Video releases, has great matches and fun bits with Sean Mooney causing chaos around the old Titan Towers. I always preferred the tapes that had shenanigans with Sean Mooney. This one had my first discovery of the infamous tape library, and...infamous appearance of Kevin Dunn.

It’s possible I wasn’t good at searching Peacock but I thought they never put the History of the WWF videos on the Peacock version of the network (and maybe not the Network itself)

Posted (edited)

I had the network from it's inception to it's move to Peacock, and it certainly didn't have any from The Best Of series on there.

on the WCW Vault today: Clash 32!

the two shocking things in the video are..

Spoiler

Chris Benoit actually shown (in the background of the open) but not mentioned, and.. (edit: and a Benoit mention unedited during the Pillman match, let's pretend like they're eventually gonna tear off the bad PR bandage on that matter)

Pillman causing Bobby Heenan to drop an F-Bomb live on cable not being edited out

extra Clash 32 notes

Pillman wearing a top where he cut out an area around one pec just in case he wanted to start breast feeding people as part of his loose cannon gimmick

Disco Inferno showing up at the Wedding pretape and WCW realizing he couldn't logically get his ass whipped by Kevin Sullivan and show up at the wedding later

Was that Tonya Harding with Konnan in the photo before Konnan/Psicosis? Neat "LOVE MACHINE" jacket on Psicosis but that was a bit of a weird match

Everybody with half a clue knew that Nancy Sullivan was gonna quickly turn heel on Hogan/Savage, right? but what a weird alignment to do for like a week

Amused that the one time Ric Flair really tried to use his pull post-Hogan was so he wouldn't get pinned at Clash 32 in a tag team match

Yes, this was when AAA and AJW among others were recruiting her hard. There are like at least three big (long) stories in the Observer in as many issues regarding Tonya Harding being offered deals to join someone's wrestling promotion. There were all these grand plans up to and including her wrestling on the 94 All Japan Women's interpromotional show at the Egg Dome, which God knows that shit needed another match. That show may still be going for all we know. Now that said, after all these amazing plans potentially, her involvement ultimately ended up she just showed at one of the various TripleManias I believe. Didn't get involved in a match or anything. So she mostly likely got paid a lot of money to just be at a wrestling show. Good work if you can get it. She probably left a lot of money on the table though.

I’m surprised she never ended up in a Russo promotion.

If my timeline serves me correctly, wasn't all the celebrity boxing and VH1 Celebreality stuff going on when Russo was in TNA? That would have been the only window where it would have made sense. If the Kerrigan incident happened in 4-5 years later, she would have been on WWF TV. In 1994? WWF probably didn't want to do something outlandish (at least by their norm) with the steroid trial going on. WCW was probably the landing spot cause they ultimately did an angle at the Clash where Hogan got attacked by a mysterious man, which was too on the nose even by 1994 standards. By the time Russo started stuff beyond being a magazine writer, that story had long been gone. However, it would be very pro wrestling if Tonya Harding showed up in Juggalo Championship Wrestling when at least 75% of the roster wasn't even born when the story was at its height. Hell, when was the last time figure skating was that big in the United States when the Olympics wasn't going on?

I could easily see Russo wanting to bring slightly past their due date celebrities in TNA, especially NY centric ones like Amy Fisher or Joey Buttafucco.

oh god, I just looked it up and John Wayne Babbitt appeared on Raw in 1998.

Not only appeared but appeared in one of the most inconsequential segments in Raw history. Like they did the Chopee Chopee stuff with Kaientai just to bring him in. However, everyone remembers that for the ridiculousness but like only 5 people remember he appeared IIRC on the Raw taped after that. Keep in mind, JENNA JAMESON in the height of her fame was on WWF TV and no one remembers that either. They were just wasting money with those cameos.

Given where TNA was situated regionally and more importantly, financially when Russo was there early on, any celebrity or person from the past who use to be somewhat famous had to be living close by or living close enough and be attached or adjacent to a local sports team.

The famous 5/4/81 Patterson vs Slaughter alley fight, one of the two greatest pre-expansion (W)WWF matches, the other being the Backlund vs Patera Texas Death Match from 5/19/80/

I do wish that they just attached an all-color copy instead of going to B&W during the head wound portion of the match. They have to have some high quality version of that match that is all color. I would have been fine with the B&W footage before airing the full match if the match didn't go to B&W in those spots

also love Sarge deciding to kayfabe the Alley Fight build

The WCW Vault live feed has been more interesting of late. They were showing one of my favorite PPVs of all time the other day 'Spring Stampede' 1994 and they are showing a lot of the studio shows
