The All Purpose Comics Industry News Thread

If Marvel cuts down on titles, the line will become even more whiter and more male.

They also could also get rid of editors, they already let go of editors years ago. It's expected these day for writers to know the continuity and other junk these days.  Marvel stories might also become very more loose with continuity.

In unrelated news bad stuff going on for IDW

yeah that IDW news is scary.

i feel for all the employees and hope the writers/artists can all come out ahead. If i was one of the ones that kept my position, i would absolutely be looking at options immediately.

i hope any limited series currently getting published have a chance to properly end, and any ongoings get fair warning as well. Unsurprisingly, the loss of Star Wars/GI Joe/Transformers/etc. made a hugely negative impact on the company. i suppose that's always the chance you take with licensed properties, but it still sucks.

I learned today that Ollie's is a dangerous place to browse as a comic book reader. Ended up walking out with Absolute Promethea Book 3, Absolute Preacher Vol 3, and the second volume of Mark Waid's Flash run for $70. Just a crazy random assortment of stuff for really cheap.

The comic book industry makes money but the amount of readers for single issues are down. Actual sales is unknown these days for single floppy issues.

Sometimes inflation is good, inflation is keeping various old media's stay afloat. (Cable tv, print, movies).

Me, in the end I expect the other media versions of DC and Marvel Characters from Cartoons, Movies, Video Games to fully supplant the Comic versions in the end.

But that's in the next decade. Also when many Golden Age Characters and etc enter the public domain

yikes. losing 4 of your top 9 staff in the span of 2 weeks is usually not a positive step. i don't know their corporate culture or anything, but they're definitely one of the big comic/pop culture sites around, so i'll be curious what this morphs into. i'm betting it's less of what interests me, but to be fair, that's the way that site has leaned for many years.

I don't want to drag down the art work thread so I'm bringing it here: hasn't it been like close to twenty years since Greg Land was revealed to be just tracing his art work with almost no adjustments etc costumes, lifting wholesale from other comic creators, catalogs, magazines, and even porn?

Not to mention that thing where he uses like three models for all his characters so they all look alike, and his story telling is nearly non-existent...

How the hell is this guy still getting work from Marvel?

I read that he gets books out on time, I dunno if that's true in 2023. He isn't also the only artist that traces. Neal Adams was fine with tracing.

Also, I imagine most consumers don't care or at the very least don't care to not buy a book that he does the art on. Just from the amount of variant covers that he ends up doing I would say that there have to a decent amount of people that are fans of his work.

Wiki is wrong, Marvel Entertainment, LLC still exists. It contains the comic line.

Feige gained more control since Ike's firing. Dan Buckley reports only to Feige now. All the other info seems to be fake news like the folding in. Ike still owns stocks from Disney.

https://www.marvel.com/corporate/about, so Marvel Entertainment, LLC still exists unlike the wrong info on wiki saying other wise.

Trademarks can be renewed, so titles, names, slogans, phrases, logo.

People forget Trademarks can also protect likeness, so even if the very early version of Superman goes into the public domain in the next decade, DC retains the likeness of Superman via renewing the trademarks they own.
