Just Dave
As great a trip down memory lane as Wayne's World was, it kind of frustrated me in some respects. I don't understand what happened in Mike Myer's head the last 12 yrs. that made him think things like "the Love Guru" was a good idea. Go back and watch the first "Wayne's World" movie and just let the realization that no one in America at that time had a better understanding of what about our culture deserves to be lampooned that Mike Myers hit you. To go from that to where he is now. Sad.
insidecradle
The new Rolling Stone Magazine ranks their best SNL performers of all time. Tina Fey is number 3 (the rankings are based soley on performances as a cast member and not writing or any of that). I just don't get it. They're also very very brutal on several other cast members. Jim Breuer and Jay Mohr got awful write ups. Kevin Nealon was much lower than I would have thought. Anyway check it out, it is interesting. Albeit a biased and poorly thought out ranking system..... It's Rolling Stone after all.
Throat
That list was bullshit and seemed ranked in a way to maximize SNL fan outrage and ensure it went viral. Nothing positive should ever be said about Jay Mohr, though. They got that right.
JimBob Skeeter
Have any of you caught the SNL's they've been playing from 9-10 (CST) Saturday evenings? This past weekend, they replayed the RIchard Pryor one, episode 7 from the 1st seaon, opening with the disclaimer, along the lines fo: "This was broadcast when times are different and certains things were accepted. Over time, these things were edited out. Here is that episode in it's entirety for the first time." Holy CRAP, was it funny, and quite a few times I WTF'ed!!!! The biggest one was the word association with Chevy. Pryor's two monologues were funny as hell.
offspring515
So the Rudy Guiliani/Birdman cold open has to be on the short list of biggest bombs to ever open the show.
piranesi
Dakota Johnson was really good though. Like really natural and having fun and even improving a little.* When she was playing nerdy blogger chick I was suddenly in the mood to see her star in a live action DARIA reboot. Hollywood, I just handed you a 20 to 30 thousand dollar idea. Make it happen. *disclaimer: I have a thing for chicks with big noses. Like, my biggest lifetime crush was on Stefi Graf. It's not inconceivable that this is affecting my judgment here.
Dolfan in NYC
So the Rudy Guiliani/Birdman cold open has to be on the short list of biggest bombs to ever open the show. I watched that and said to myself, "Why am I watching this when House of Cards is on Netflix." So, yeah. Upright Citizen's Brigade used to do a free show on Sundays where they would literally lift the premise of every SNL sketch from the night before and make them better. I wish they still did, because damn that Birdman thing.... yikes.
offspring515
Yeah I was pleasantly surprised by Dakota Johnson. She was funny.
Kuetsar
Didn't see SNL, but she had a short lived sitcom a couple of years ago that she was really charming in. . . .
hammerva
Lots of people are apparently pissed at this spoof. Granted the timing isn't good but thought it was pretty funny https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptJMXd02tuk
JonnyLaw
I thought that sketch was funny without any context, and then during Update, I realized it was a play on the "rich girls joining ISIS" story. Speaking of Update, Jost and Che could be a poor man's Nealon and McDonald, but instead of playing the lines with any obliviousness or dry sarcasm, they play them completely straight. Greggulator
Lots of people are apparently pissed at this spoof. Granted the timing isn't good but thought it was pretty funny https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptJMXd02tuk That's an A+ sketch. I can't believe there's an outrage. It totally makes fun of the whole thing about the children of means who leave to join ISIS thing. The one thing I love is that the sketch actually leaves a question: "Why is this young girl leaving the comfort of family to join the worst group of people alive?" Because that's an actual thing happening and it's completely insane. Also, making fun of ISIS and other folks like that is like Charlie Hedbo: We have things like "a sense of humor" and "satirical cartoons" and "long running sketch comedy shows" and "people who get upset about things like this" all they really have are bootlegeed weaponry and brainwashed minions and intolerance for anyone who doesn't see it their way. You could also make a case that it spoofs how we combine consumerism with our military, but putting an incredibly dark and awful (in a hilarious way) spin on it. A true Hall-of-Fame SNL commercial parody and one of the best bits in ages.
piranesi
I just kind of saw the whole thing as a send up on cheap sentimentalism. The boogeyman of the day just proved to be a convenient means to that end.
Hail Sabin
Yeah the ISIS sketch was the best part of the show. Dakota Johnson like several other hosts this year could have a classic episode of SNL if the writing didn't suck so bad. I liked her a lot on Ben and Kate so I might be biased towards her performance. Also the cold opening SUCKED!
Hail Sabin
I thought THOR did a pretty good job of hosting this week and the Zac Brown Band were really good for only seeing them before on FOO Fighters Sonic Highways.
insidecradle
I thought Hemsworth was just okay. Cecily Strong continues to unimpress me with her characters. The porn star bit isn't all that funny to me however I know some people are big fans. Same with "the girl you shouldn't have sarted a conversation with". I kind of feel like it's the same character at times. So glad she isn't still doing weekend update though. Not saying Jost and Che are any better. I really like the past 2 or 3 seasons up until the 40th. I remember a great episode where Vanessa Bayer was in almost every single sketch. Kate McKinnon is hilarious. Aidy Bryant is good when she's on, same with Taran Killam. It's a little more hit and miss lately but alas I'm a lifer so I'll never comepletely stop watching SNL. offspring515
Man was that Avengers bit the laziest thing ever? "Hey what if superheroes were like athletes?" No clever twist or out of the box thinking. Hemsworth did well, Weekend Update was fun...I think Che and Jost come alive a bit when they loosen up and interact. JimBob Skeeter
I liked everything up until right after Weekend Update. The Thor skit/party guy actually had me cringe. Do you really think Marvel liked seeing that? Dug the four Hemsworth brothers opener, and thought this was Jost and &che's best Update since they started together. I like that they are starting to loosen up and interact in what seems like a natural setting, not having everything/joke scripted.

Yeah, the problem with some of those characters is that they aren't funny in multiple appearances because it's sort of the same joke retold in a different way (the girl you don't want to meet at a party and the porn star bit), so they become more characters of the original characters. And, twice removed, the jokes don't really work. I have no idea why Taran isn't the breakout star of the show right now.

_MJ_
The wrestling promo was the best. Good ending. I like the Dinner Date one too, but mostly due to The Rock and Cecily Strong's chemistry in it.

Vincey Greene
I thought the Keaton ep was the best one in a long long time. Good solid stuff top to bottom, Update was on fire, the Michael Keaton Easter special bit was phenomenal and we got a (great) Mike O'Brien short. If you didn't like that, this show isn't for you.
