Brian Fowler Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 If you have to pay for an iOS app, then you also need to pay separately for the Android version. Right. But my point was more about if you already fragmented between the two. I know android apps bought on the play store will be for both your phone and tablet, but I *think* on the App Store, you have to buy separate phone and tablet versions of at least some paid apps. But, again, I'm not in the apple ecosystem, so I might be wrong. Moving on: Amazon this morning announced a new Fire TV Stick. 39 dollars, with a dedicated remote (but not the voice search remote that comes with the set-top box, that costs an extra 29.99) which puts it just slightly more expensive than a Chromecast (which has no remote) and quite a bit less than a roku stick (which I have and really like) But the real headline is if you are an amazon prime subscriber and pre-order it in the next two days, it's only 19 dollars.
Bustronaut Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Anything paid shows up on my ipad and ipod, along with the wife's iphone, including FTP games like candy crush, etc.
Cliff Hanger Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Thanks for the Fire Stick tip. My little brother will be getting one as a gift, as he finally got a nice he tv but is still streaming thru his damn wii. Envious of everyone who got to order a Oneplus today, looks like they opened the floodgates while I was busy at work. Are they still issuing preorder invites to give away to anyone who orders one themselves?
Craig H Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Yeah, the only app or game I can think of that you have to buy for both is Ticket to Ride.
Kevin Wilson Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Can't beat $19 for the Fire Stick, I just ordered one to pop into my TV at work. One of the many benefits of working the overnight shift.
Brian Fowler Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Yeah, despite having a roku stick and a PS3, it's only 19 bucks, might as well give it a shot.
EVA Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Good news: I got an Air 2 today. Bad news: The store didn't have any cases, so it's just sitting in its box until I can get one delivered. FUN.
blitzkrieg Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 One of the things I would point to when it comes to Android tablets is the power of homebrew development. I have an ASUS TF-101 which is over three years old and hasn't had an official upgrade since 2012 and yet has the latest version of KitKat on it and probably runs better now than it did when I first bought it.

My order says 3-4 weeks now so I'm guessing if I get an invite it will come after they charge me/fulfill the order.
Niners Fan in CT Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 I just bought an S5. It's pretty fucking nice. Any apps I should be using? Suggestions?
Zimbra Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 I like 1Weather for weather, Google Keep for taking notes, Any.Do for todo lists and reminders, and 1Password for managing passwords. I'd recommend BeyondPod for podcasts but the new version they released is pretty buggy. I got a Google Inbox invite. I'm not really sure what the point is; it doesn't do email as well as Gmail and doesn't do reminders and stuff as well ass Google Now. Maybe it'll get better if I use it more the way Now did.
Petey Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 I think the idea is that it combines features from Gmail and GNow. Right now it doesn't do either as well as the standalones but I think the goal is that eventually it'll be a good 2-in-1. I think it's a little clunky but I have hope. The new material design Google Maps is really nice.
Zimbra Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 Yeah, I love the updated design on all the Google apps. They need to get their shit together and fix Lollipop so I can put that on my phone now.
odessasteps Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 Need to replace my ipad2 soon due to damage. Get a newer ipad (not an Air 2, but something newer than thus one) or go non-apple tablet? I have a Galaxy s5 so im already in the Samsung family that way.
Cliff Hanger Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 Yeah, if it had dropped a week later I might buy one since I don't have any decent music setup, but by the time I get paid it'll be full price. Very neat toy though.

I have a Galaxy s5 so im already in the Samsung family that way. I'd get another iPad. I'm vehemently anti-Apple and a complete Android fanatic... on phones. For tablets, the Android ecosystem still really isn't there. Just not the same amount or quality of tablet specific apps.
Brian Fowler Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 I signed up to request an invite for the echo, we'll see if I get invited and before the price jumps.
Craig H Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 I signed up as well. I don't have a Bluetooth speaker yet, so at $100, it would be great to have one with all of the other bells and whistles of the Echo.

For tablets, the Android ecosystem still really isn't there. Just not the same amount or quality of tablet specific apps. Same. My Nexus 7 (2012) has aged terribly. A lot of the Android apps still aren't optimized for tablets. I'd probably stick to getting another iPad.
Zimbra Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Really fighting the urge to order a Nexus 6 today. There's nothing wrong with my 5, but I'm an idiot who likes new and shiny things.
Pete Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 So what exactly is the OnePlus appeal compared to, say, the Nexus? Just curious because I picked up an invite for one at a tech show last week and I see all the buzz for it here...
blitzkrieg Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Really fighting the urge to order a Nexus 6 today. There's nothing wrong with my 5, but I'm an idiot who likes new and shiny things. Luckily for me, not wanting a bigger phone than I currently have (Moto X 2013) keeps me from buying most new phones. Edit: Course now I see that the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is readily available unlocked in the US which has me wanting to buy a new phone now.
