ChesterCopperpot Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 And the Argos owenership situation looks to be finally drawing to a close with Bell and Larry Tanenbaum buying the team Bell and Larry Tanenbaum, two of three parties involved in ownership of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, are negotiating to buy the Canadian Football League's Toronto Argonauts from David Braley and aiming to secure a lease that would see the team move to BMO Field in time for the 2016 CFL season, TSN has learned. Toronto city councillor Mark Grimes, chair of Exhibition Place, where BMO Field is located, said he spoke to CFL interim commissioner Jim Lawson on Monday morning and understands the sale is nearing completion. Completing the complex transaction has been difficult, according to several sources, because the third partner in MLSE's ownership, Rogers Communications, has declined to take on a stake in the Argos. Tanenbaum and Bell have been negotiating a BMO Field lease with MLSE, which includes representatives from Rogers who want to ensure its partners pay market value for the stadium that is currently home to Toronto FC

odessasteps Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Bell should just buy the whole league. Much cheaper than what Rogers paid for its nhl rifhts.
DouglasC Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 For those that hate basketball, baseball and hockey, here's how you'll spend your night. And yes, that screen grab from the Simpsons was actually on the CFL Twitter feet.
cubbymark Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 I like all those sports, but I like the CFL as well. This also showed up on the CFL twitter feed.
Death From Above Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 The CFL draft is always a weird animal. The first round is always loaded with Canadian linemen and one or two surprises, and a lot of the best US prospects (guys who might still be on the bubble in NFL camps as rookies) only go later.
odessasteps Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 I wondered why the cfl commish was on tsn radio today.
elizium Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Nic Demski was picked! yay, great for him, he dominated for the Bisons. Hope he does.....oh, he got picked by the Riders. Well, he can go die in a fire, I guess. 2
DEAN Posted May 13, 2015 Author Posted May 13, 2015 Alouettes pick Jacob Ruby from U of R in the first round! Go Spiders!
RIPPA Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 So apparently I am going to have to start a CFL stupidity thread http://deadspin.com/cfl-team-investigating-extremely-woke-holocaust-questi-1704491491
Death From Above Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 Between Arland Bruce's comments a while ago now on Michael Sam, everything Ochocinco, and this, it hasn't been the best period on social media for the Als. In a sense, I actually like that CFL players are a lot less "filtered" on twitter than players in bigger leagues. So many of the NFL/NHL/MBA/MLB accounts are so filtered, so corporate, and pretty fake. At least the CFL guys come off as themselves. Which... obviously isn't always a good thing.
ChesterCopperpot Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 Bell and Larry Tanenbaum have teamed up to buy the Argos http://www.tsn.ca/bell-tanenbaum-partner-up-to-own-argonauts-1.286511
Death From Above Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 I'm glad. Not really an Argos fan but they are an over century-old institution and I hope this can bring them a period of stability.
odessasteps Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 A story that will dominate tsn and be ignored by sportsnet.
Serious Darius Bagfelt Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 The first couple of games at BMO will be well attended or sell out and everyone will be claiming the Argos are back. Then after a couple of weeks the crowds will dwindle again. Makes sense the CFL is an important property for Bell/TSN and you need to keep a team in Toronto afloat and they can afford to absorb the loses.
ChesterCopperpot Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 And of course - the Argos get upstaged at their own press conference
Death From Above Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 This was the only conclusion once BMO Field got their publicly funded stadium renovation that was contingent on it being made a multipupose facility. Even if they fall off to a low attendance of 20K a game or so the atmosphere should be so much better in a properly sized venue. And now the Argonauts can finally start sorting out some of their other issues, like the mess they have had the last couple years not having a regular practice facility. The stability will do a lot for their ability to recruit and keep players in town.
Serious Darius Bagfelt Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Atmosphere will still blow because it is Toronto and I havent sensed any bit of Argo excitement here in a few decades.. Even when the crowds in Hamilton fall to the 18000 level or so the crowds there are still rowdy as hell, but it will be good to have the Argos back on the Exhibition grounds. Like you said the Argos have needed some investment here for awhile. Hopefully Bell/Tannenbaum feel like using some of their spare change to give them proper training facilities and not some crummy field with a couple of double wide trailers parked on it and crank up the promotion and try to get the kids excited about the CFL again. I was part of that so called lost generation where I couldnt see an Argo or TiCat game on TV all through the early 80's. Ironically when the Argos were exciting as hell to watch.
Kuetsar Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 Michael Sam becomes the first openly, blah blah blah. . . . http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12931850/michael-sam-signs-two-year-deal-montreal-alouettes-cfl
Death From Above Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 Not surprised he's wound up here. He's sort of right in the mold anyway of being not quite big enough to play line but not quite fast enough to lay LB in the NFL. Up here I fully expect him to play DL.
