Pretty good show, except for Rowan.

* Daniel Bryan kicks off the show and introduces Ryback, Dolph Ziggler and Erick Rowan. The "fired" WWE Superstars return to a big pop. Rowan spoke and got the "what?" treatment. They're interrupted by The Authority, minus Stephanie McMahon and Triple H. It's announced that the three Superstars can get into the Royal Rumble main event if they win their matches tonight - Ziggler vs. Bad News Barrett, Ryback vs. Rusev and Rowan vs. Luke Harper.

* Ziggler vs. Barrett in a non-title match is up first. Ziggler gets the win with a Zig Zag and earns his spot in the Royal Rumble match.

* Renee Young interviewed Roman Reigns about the Royal Rumble match. One correspondent said it actually wasn't awful and another said Reigns is looking more confident on the mic.

* Ryback defeated Rusev by count out after what was said to be a good match. Ryback earns his spot in the Rumble main event. After the match, Rusev attacked and beat on Ryback but Ryback turned it around. Rusev avoided a Shellshocked attempt and retreated to the back.

* Brie Bella defeated Naomi in a short match. Nikki Bella was at ringside while Paige and Natalya were on commentary.

* Luke Harper defeated Erick Rowan after a missed top rope splash. Rowan does not qualify for the Royal Rumble.

* Backstage segment with The Miz and Damien Sandow, who are announced for the Rumble. There's dissension between the two. Miz talks down at Sandow for the X-Pac segment on RAW.

* Kane vs. Daniel Bryan in a No DQ match is up next. Joey Mercury and Jamie Noble come out with Kane. Kane ended up tapping out but the referee didn't call it for some reason. Mercury and Noble interfere. Bryan cleans house but kicks out of a chokeslam. Bryan comes back and gets the win, keeping his spot in the Royal Rumble. Big Show comes out and attacks Bryan. This leads to a huge brawl with the entire locker room coming out. The Superstars left standing after that brawl were Ziggler, Reigns, Bryan, Ryback, Big Show, Kane and Dean Ambrose. SmackDown ends with just the babyfaces standing tall.

I feel like there's a new rotation of writers again. When Dolph had the IC title, nearly all of his matches were title defenses and they felt important. So it goes back to Wade and now we're back to nothing but non-title matches where the champion loses. If it isn't a writing staff rotation, then it's a really dumb fucking way to build heel heat.

At the Rumble, Erick runs in to brawl with Harper all the way to back; Harper is DQed and this sets up their feud. Simple enough

I can already feel myself fast forwarding through that feud.

Maybe it ends the way the Owen-Bulldog feud did, and we get a reunited Wyatt Foundation.

I hope that's the way it goes.

Or he gets in the Rumble by joining the Authority and getting the acceptance he craves.

A Rowan heel turn would suck so much. His face turn was actually somewhat inspired for a couple of shows. Pretty good case for "wins matter" because his reactions went back to zero real quick after losing clean to Show. Don't know what he'd do as a heel besides put over Ziggler before hitting the ME/Superstars circuit.

The show opened with an awesome video package on Sting looking cool before guys talked for 20 minutes. DURING THE BREAK, matches were made. Barrett was talked about as someone who won the IC Title and has lost several times since then. He continued this trend tonight in a nothing chilnlock-filled match that was highlighted by a fan holding up a WE WERE PROMISED JETPACKS sign while Barrett went for the elbow. Outlaws are facing the Ascension at the PPV, and Dean sneakily switched numbers with Fandango while he buried his tongue in Rosa's mouth. Roman, a huge prick, talked about how HE HAS NO FRIENDS IN THE RUMBLE, while his supposed brother is in too, and it's one versus all his his fist is cocked and ready to rock. Ryback nearly killed Rusev several times because he's still shockingly bad for being in wrestling as long as he is, and he won by countout while neither guy got an upper hand afterwards - so everything about this match was unsatisfying. Rowan-Harper was legit the best match of the night to this point since Harper's a good worker and these two have good chemistry. They structured this around things Rowan can do well, things Harper can do well, and the right man won. Kane-Bryan wasn't anything special, and the show's back to feeling quite missable.
