JANUARY 2015 TV DISCUSSION

RIPPA

Recommended Posts

Amazon just dropped a bunch of new pilots, including an adaptation of THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE. Figured there might be some interest in that.

There's also a new Shawn Ryan show in the mix called MAD DOGS, which I believe is a format of a British show. Ballsy choice on Ryan's part to go with another dog-related title after TERRIERS.

Broad City fucking killed it with the season opener. Awesome stuff.

Broad City is back, and Comedy Central has wisely already renewed it for a third season.  All is right.

I feel this is the year they'll get the big buzz.

I'm going to try to get Broad City into our viewing schedule based on all the good I've heard about the show.

I've seen a few clips on youtube that are hit and miss with me, because I think I'm getting burned out on stoner comedies. (See what I did there?)

Hey, this was pretty good. Kinda slow and spends most of its time setting up plot that we may never see followed up on if it doesn't get enough up votes, or however Amazon scores this stuff, but I would watch another episode or two, if they ever get made. There's potential there.

Been a while since I read the book, but I feel like there were some substantial changes, The Grasshopper Lies Heavy being a newsreel instead of a novel being the most substantial (but understandable).

Weird/eccentric/asshole detective/doctor is another tv trope that needs to die.

I started watching "Masters of Sex" and I'm really enjoying it BUT this trope is nagging at me like crazy every time I watch it.

There was a great article about this somewhere recently illustrating how we've combined this trope with the "competence porn" trope.  We like watching hyper-competent assholes because we like to be told that while there are people smarter than us, they're socially inept, so it's okay.

Broad City is the best. I absolutely love that show. (*Disclosure, my brother plays Ilana's boss.)

I read an interview somewhere w/ Ilana and Abbi when they were talking about their influences when they were making the show. They constantly get his with Girls and Sex and the City comparisons. I've seen maybe a combined 45 seconds of either of those shows so I probably don't know. But I can't help but think the only reason they get lumped together with those is because they're all shows about -- GET THIS! -- women who live in New York.

But they were talking about how their two big influences are Superbad and Seinfeld. And after they said it, I totally see it. The whole show is predicated about their inseparable friendship (ala Superbad) and then the whole minutiae of life in New York (ala Seinfeld). But whereas the Seinfeld folks were sort of old and grumpy, Abbi and Ilana haven't had life in New York absolutely beat the hell out of them yet, so everything like having a man's armpit in your face on the subway still feels romantic.

But Broad City is my favorite show on TV. It's really special.

I would love for fictional Ilana and Abbi to meet the fictional cast of Girls and tell them to fuck off.

Broad City = Likable fuck ups.

Girls = Why don't you four privileged people shut the fuck up and quit whining for 5 minutes?

And, holy shit, I didn't realize just how many serial killer shows where on television.

"serial killers"  are the new "young, attractive but dysfunctional people in New York looking for love" of the television world.

I've just started watching Dexter on Netflix. Made it through the first 2 seasons so far. I like it, though everyone I know has been warning me that the quality drops off greatly in the last 2 seasons.

Drops off greatly is still not even close. If they'd stopped it right after the final episode of series four, it'd be remembered as a fun as shit little popcorn TV show. As it is, those last few series'? Sweet mother of fuck.

Have you ever read the books? I can imagine the tv show is much the same way. The books had interesting plots/concepts but the writing was atrocious.

They had a shot at a perfect ending and blew it. I didn't hate the later stuff as much as most people - mainly because I liked the early stuff less than most - but they definitely went too long and butchered the ending.

https://deadline.com/2015/01/gary-sinise-cast-criminal-minds-spinoff-cbs-1201351791/

CBS has signed on Gary Sinise to star in their new Criminal Minds spin off. CBS also said their Supergirl TV show will be a weekly crime procedural show rather than a flat out superhero thing.

Now I imagine a bizarre scenario where CBS got their hands on Breaking Bad first and agreed to make it...but only if Walt and Jesse could solve mysteries on the side.

I think CBS execs wanted to get in all the superhero stuff then realized "Holy shit! All our viewers are over 50 and only want to see stand-alone episodes with a different story every week and crime-solving!"

So then we get CSI: Supergirl.  With David Caruso as Kal-El.

"Is it a bird? Is it a plane? I don't know, depends what the lab results say!"

I'm watching a marathon of this on Ion in my mind right now and it's fantastic.

Over/under on how far into season 1 before Caruso convinces the producers that the supergirl character doesn't have chemistry and she gets killed off by the Mala Noches?

The mythology elements ramped up really quickly in Arrow and never looked back. If it had stayed as unconnected as NCIS I wouldn't have watched more than nine episodes. Eat that, Zeidler. There's always a B plot dealing with them now even in episodes with A plots that are Villain of the Week (and those are actually relatively rare now). There's also much more room for character development, I'd say.

CBS is the worst.

There are a couple of shows on CBS that I like: "Person of Interest" and "Elementary". They are both procedurals, but also have an overarching storyline. Although Elementary hasn't really had that since the Mycroft storyline.
