Lucha Underground Report 1/21/15

In real time, baby!

A thought from the end of the last ep: did Cage put that 'X' in black tape on his elbow region to keep the muscles from blowing out?

Pimpi/Mascarita vs. Cisco/Castro: Everyone gets great heat for their entrances. The double corner Ryder kicks (I guess?) were just nuts. We get our first reference of the episode as Striker references Dick Togo. Pimpi has some great chops that didn't sound sweetened for a change, just naturally loud, and I really enjoy his slighly sloppy dual armdrags/headscissors and dives. He also threatened to kiss the ref again and the pop for that will be huge when he finally gets it. After Mascarita gets pinned, Big Ryck gets jumped and I don't buy him not taking all three of them out for one minute but the cigar burning is nasty. Fun little opening match with Los Cholos being workrate asskickers and Pimpi and Mascarita doing their thing.

Hey guys, Deathdream isn't a giallo. You just played The Black Belly of the Tarantula, stick that in the marathon instead and keep Deathdream separate. (it is really awesome to see them pimping giallo films just like the spaghetti western spot they've been airing though)

Cage totally blew that last line. "You know why they call me Cage? Because when I'm in the ring, it's like being in there with a machine." Seriously? You can't even get the final noun right? You can't say, "Because when you're in the ring with me, it's like being locked in a cage, there's no escape" or something similar? Phew... stick with juicing up and powerbombing people please.

Pentagon Jr. vs. Superfly: Vampiro claims to be a martial arts guru... hahahahaha. Well, the slaps/chops seem sweetened again. Pentagon does a good job at responding to Superfly's flying backwards to turn his moves around on him. Very nice Tiger Drop from Superfly, but to no avail. At least a package piledriver wasn't a fucking transition move in one of these matches for a change. Pentagon shit-talks Chavito. I expected more from this, neither guy seemed to gel well and Superfly just came off stupid for constantly turning his back on Pentagon. If it got 2/3 falls on a CMLL midcard I wonder if it'd be any better, or even be any longer.

Sexy Star vs. El Mariachi Loco: So Mariachi Loco is your jobber whos backstory is like if Dirk Diggler didn't go into porn. Or succeed at his chosen profession, either. Sexy proceeds to beat on him and flip him around a bunch and as a result comes off way better than usual, because Loco will stooge and bump around for her. Aside from a botched hot shot this was a really entertaining, short mixed match where the two sides actually seemed even.

Still kicking myself for not watching Rats: Night of Terror when I rented it years ago. Thank you again El Rey, for putting a shitty Bruno Mattei movie on your network when absolutely nobody else would.

King Cuerno vs. Drago (Last Luchador Standing): Can Drago swallow that black goo? Apparently it's edible? Anyway, this is the blowoff to the feud. Running the ropes four times is a bit ludicrous. Vampiro and Striker are really good in this one, getting over different points of psychology. Ha, Cuerno put the deer head on one of the ringposts. It's clear this is going to be a series of big spots but they're getting over the differences of speed/offence in the characters. Damn, the Arrow from Hell plancha turns Drago backwards onto his belly. MDII through the table is a big enough spot to end the match, but Cuerno ups it with the rope (in the mouth, too!) wrapping him up in the corner as he kicks him in the head and then chokes him out during the count. If this were another era they'd take a bullrope match around the loop. This felt like an extended version of their last match with a way cooler ending. Cuerno putting the deer's head on Drago is the literal cherry on top and he soaks in the heat, another reason he's still my favorite wrestler in the fed. Good stuff and I still don't think this was completely a blowoff but they got both guys over bigtime.

surprisingly, Mascarita wasn't a very effective Robert Gibson there.

and Big Ryck is now a good guy probably. The good guys couldn't make a save since they don't like him anyways and there's a lot of stairs on the good-guy entrance.

Pentagon Jr has a mysterious person who'll help him with Chavo.

Sexy Star inspired Striker to proclaim every woman to be sexy and a star.

so, LMS kinda sprinted into a near-finish, then had legit near-finishes, and ends on a screwjob. Ok.

I didn't mind the finish, that was pretty good without using blood. Vampiro needed to shut his mouth with the

Valentine/Piper

reference, though. Just say it looks painful, that's all you have to do.

I liked the reference, wrestling has a history and it should be acknowledged.

That said, I actually thought they undersold what King Cuerno was doing to Drago.  The way Drago was being bound, Cuerno could literally have strangled him to death, and a little more freaking out from the commentators to sell this would have been a good idea.  "Cuerno don't fuck around" is good character development.

That's Prince Puma. Puma King is in CMLL, but I believe he lost his crown and is now just referred to as "Puma", but some still refer to him as Puma King. Both Pumas are cool though. There's probably several dozen more roaming the Lucha Kingdom.

Whoever PAC is.

PAC is Adrian Neville in NXT. Prince Puma is also Ricochet.

What about TJ Perkins, though?

I am glad I am not the only one loving King Cuerno. He's been great so far.

Disappointed they're not following up with Muertes/Morrison.

Give them time. It's nice that they are taking the angles two-three per episode at a time and not trying to cram everything together. I think we're all so used to three hours of wrestling at a time, and then multiple hours on different days, that it's a weird hangover dealing with a fed having only one hour per week.

Cuerno is a wonderful, surly bastard.  That match was nowhere near perfect, but damn, what a blast to watch, and the ending was legitimately intense.  Also, it can't be denied, as others have already mentioned, the commentary was really sharp and focused, enhancing the tension quite successfully.  I actually, um,  ENJOYED Vampiro's call of that match!

Again, it's been said before, but I think it's worth repeating:  Lucha Underground, New Japan, and NXT finally have me truly excited to watch wrestling again, a feeling that's been missing for about 15 years, I'd reckon.  I really hope this show proves to be successful; 2 seasons or luckily, even more...

Striker and Vampiro were ruining that analogy during Cage's debut too. I was screaming A CAGE IS NOT A MACHINE IT IS A STRUCTURE all the way through that four way.

I am also a fan of Pimpinela Escarleta's extremely unathletic ranas and springboards. All that gender confusion buys the valuable minutes needed to pull those moves off. I'm enjoying the rotation of fueds between the weeks but would like even a quick mention of the dudes who are missing like Mundo and Muertes.

Watch out Crew. Big Ryck could be bringing backup.

Lucha Underground Report 1/28/15

TELENOVELA OPEN! Cage is a machine. Still. They have the band back to play again which is cool for the live crowd. Vampiro raises the roof? Okay.

Mil Muertes w/Catrina vs. Fenix: I think I need to borrow Vamp's drool cup for when Catrina comes out. Fenix hits a lot of fast offense which Mil shakes off and nearly decapitates him with a straight right to go on offense. He catches him for a deadlift German that's just beautiful. This is just a mauling until Fenix sneaks a pin off a superplex and... well, at least we didn't have to see the Flatliner. There were also some mean rights in the corner, Fenix getting Brocked into the corner with an overhead belly-to-belly, etc. so if you wanted to see Fenix get beat up, you'll enjoy this. I don't know if he needed to win this, though. It's nice that they're defending the smaller guys and Fenix did lose last time but Mil hasn't been on in awhile and the last time he was he lost. Mil could have at least beat his ass some more afterwards to get his heat back.

Cage talks while guys try and beat him up in a parking lot. He says he's immortal and he'll go out of this world the way he came in... so he's an immaculate conception? I guess because he's a machine, that makes sense.

Argenis/Super Fly/Aero Star vs. Cortez Castro/Mr. Cisco/Bael: So it's AAA vs. the Crew. Both teams work pretty smooth with each other, everything is fast and fluid building to the high spots. There's an especially big one with a shaky Aero Star coming off of Argentis' shoulders as he stands on the second rope. Argentis does the Canadian Destroyer and deserves getting double stomped after for that. Super Fly is really slapping the piss out of guys in this. Aero botches a kick but ranas one of the Crew off the top into the pile and then immediately hilos on all of them again. Everyone worked well with each other and those are some huge spots; I'd say it was an above average midcard match but only Super Fly and Aero Star are standing out to me here. At least Super Fly didn't eat the pin again, and logically so because it seemed like Aero did the most spots and took the most abuse.

Prince Puma and Konnan are talking to Vamp... well, Konnan is talking to Vamp. And Puma has to separate them with Vamp doing his goofy mean-mugging. What else did you expect from this.

Prince Puma vs. Cage: Puma immediately hits cage with a hilo but Cage shoulderblocks a rana attempt to go on offense. Pretty much what you would expect, a bunch of power moves vs. highflying and aversion reversals. Cage has his own flying though with a second rope moonsault and does a good job catching Puma for a jackhammer among other things. Puma wears him down with kicks until Cage pushes the ref and then nuts Puma. Puma takes a Gory Special into a Sister Abigail (!) before Cage tosses the ref, then Konnan hits him with the cane and takes a belt shot. WE GOT JUICE! Cage tears the belt in half and Konnan is soaked. Awesome for a guy coming out of kidney replacement surgery to take one for the team.

Dario is peeking through the window gleefully before some Asian gal spooks him and asks about somebody named Matanza. Dario says you can ask anyone on his "roaster" before she vanishes like a vampire through the door.

Well that was fun depending on how much you like spots and big moves because this one was full of 'em, even more than usual with the hosses there. Cage even busted out an F5. I think I liked Konnan blading and Dario's hilariously evil smile as he looked through the drapes more than anything in this episode though.
