Dolfan in NYC Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Justin Verlander's ass is a good place to end August. After Fernandez went down in the spring, I never thought I'd say it, but the Marlins have a realistic shot of getting in. LET'S GO MARLINS!
Cobra Commander Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 is the Marlins chance of the playoffs really much better than KC's chance last year? there's a bunch of teams ahead of Miami. Also, this September will be brought to me by Ned Yost/The Royals Offense (and/or) causing me to lose years from my life. The Royals closed August by looking confused when they got guys into scoring position. Although OFFICIALLY, the August 31st game is not over until September 22nd, due to the rainout/suspension tonight.
Joe Lucia Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 BP has them with a 0.7% chance the rest of the way. Once a team gets below 0.5%, they're essentially done.
The Man Known as Dan Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 The Athletics are seemingly falling apart right now. While people are still talking about the AL West (and rightfully so I guess), the A's are actually closer to being caught in the wild card race then catching them in the standings all the sudden.

Craig H Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 The Athletics are seemingly falling apart right now. While people are still talking about the AL West (and rightfully so I guess), the A's are actually closer to being caught in the wild card race then catching them in the standings all the sudden. I remember when those trades with the As happened, thinking they would run away with the division. Now I think Beane pushed all in overplaying his hand.
Joe Lucia Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 The A's went 12-17 in August with a -11 run differential, lost SEVEN games in the standings to the Angels. Kansas City picked up 7.5 on them (important given that it looks like the Central could get two Wild Cards), Detroit picked up three, Seattle picked up six, Cleveland picked up 6.5...I mean, they're still four clear of the Tigers, 4.5 of the Mariners, and seven of Cleveland, but the Angels have taken over their place as a playoff lock. Oakland should be OK, though - six with Seattle, three with Anaheim, and a bunch of chaff in September. Seattle's got six with the A's, seven with the Angels, and a brutal 11 game, 11 day road trip to Anaheim, Houston, and Toronto. TBH, I think whatever happens in this four game Indians-Tigers series this week will determine the second AL Wild Card. The Tigers do NOT have an easy schedule in September, and I've been huge on Cleveland for awhile now.
RIPPA Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Astros fire Bo Porter Not shocking since reports the last week or so ago had been about how Porter and the front office were at major odds. Dave Trembley - who was the bench coach - was also fired. Tom Lawless will be the manager for the rest of the year
Cristobal Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Sportswriters are going to go to the trades as being somehow responsible, but the fact is that while Cespedes is good, he's not THAT good, and he's certainly not responsible for the team going from 3.37 RA/G before the break to 4.05 RA/G after it. So they'll blame "chemistry".
just drew Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Yeah, was there some drama with Porter? I thought he was doing a good job, considering what he was working with. There are rumors that Atlanta's higher-ups are gonna make some changes if Atlanta doesn't finish strong. He's a guy I wouldn't mind seeing here next year...
Joe Lucia Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Porter and the front office started clashing last week. He's an inept in-game manager, and I really don't know how much of their success this year was because of him or because they had better players. And you're right Cristobal, the A's offense isn't stinking because NO CESPEDES. They're stinking because Callaspo, Jaso, Crisp, Norris, Lowrie, Gomes, and Vogt, and Moss were atrocious in August. When you combine those struggles with Gray and Kazmir hitting the wall....danger, danger.
Joe Lucia Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Braves got no-hit by the Phillies today. Burn the whole fucking thing to the ground.
BillThompson Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Soler still continues to hit like he's been in the majors forever, Turner pitched a good game, our bullpen continues to be surprisingly good, and Alcantra has been aces in the field and is starting to become more consistent with the bat. The Rizzo injury worries me, and watching Baez struggle is tough, but overall I'm very happy with the way the Cubs have been playing lately.
Craig H Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Rizzo's injury doesn't worry me much because the team isn't in the WC hunt or anything. He'll be ok.
Craig H Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 YOUR minor league player of the year is...Kris Bryant, who put up video game numbers this year. To bring it back to the majors, enjoy first place, Cardinals.
Tabe Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 YOUR minor league player of the year is...Kris Bryant, who put up video game numbers this year. To bring it back to the majors, enjoy first place, Cardinals. Yeah, he had a really great season. 43 HRs and a .325 average? Awesome. Joey Gallo put up 42 HRs between A/AA while hitting .271 (but just .232 at AA). Still just 20 years old and unbelievable power.
piranesi Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 As it's September, I'd like to take a moment to remind you all of someone: Honk! Honk! Hey, Buddy! In fact, let's take this moment to rid this thread of some of the undesirables that have been cluttering it up. Hey there, Milwaukee! Just need to get in there and give you a quick kiss! And let's take a quick look in and see how it's going for those plucky Bucs! Oh dear! Don't worry fellas! There's always re-alignment!
BrianS81177 Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 It's September. The Mariners are still competitive. The Angels have an 8 game lead over the Ms. The Ms have 7 more games left to play against the Angels. DARE TO DREAM!!
Joe Lucia Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Daniel Hudson made his first appearance in two-plus years last night after two Tommy Johns. Pretty great story.
Craig H Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Congratulations piranesi. The division belongs to the Cardinals because I don't see the Cubs taking a break from fucking everyone up. I'm shocked. I wouldn't have thought a month ago that the Cardinals would take the Central...again. I'm guessing it's more that the Central is completely inept given the Cardinals negative run differential.

piranesi Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 I'm guessing it's more that the Central is completely inept given the Cardinals negative run differential. It's almost as if some unifying force for discipline was acting to insure that order is maintained in the Galaxy. Computers? WAR? My child, the universe is run on intangibles and "knowing how to win." Just ask Oakland.
Craig H Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 The Cardinals tWtW stat leads all of baseball. 1
piranesi Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Let's not forget their "RoW". For the uninitiated that's "Rightness of Way." They also lead the league in SOpRA" (Standing Ovations per Runners Advanced). God, they're the best aren't they.
Craig H Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 tWtW: the Will to Win God. Why the hell am I giving you ammunition?
