So, that's why they won today. They can have this one.

Edwin Jackson pitched tonight for the Cubs and the Cubs managed to win 2-1. TRADE JACKSON NOW!

A fully realize no one is going to trade for the shitshow that is Edwin Jackson.

Rick Porcello, hottest pitcher in the majors. 2 straight shutouts, first Tigers pitcher since Jack Morris in 86. 25 shutout innings overall. No walks or strikeouts either. Tigers are rolling right now, looking like the team we saw in April and May.

The Astros called up Domingo Santana

That means that all 4 players they got in the Hunter Pence trade are on the roster now

But at least the Phillies got Hunter Pence so it is all worth it... oh wait...

Jake Arrieta is confused by your claim, with his back to back games he took a no hitter into the 7th.

You're right - 3 straight starts of less than 8 innings, giving up a total of 3 runs is most definitely better than 3 straight starts with no runs, 2 of which were complete game shutouts.

If you wanna go back 6 or 7 starts, you've got a case.  But last 3, as in "most recently hot"?  Porcello is the guy.

Meanwhile, Verlander has allowed two solo homers in the first to Oakland. He's the one still on the hook for $150 million while Scherzer and Porcello each hit free agency over the next two winters.

Re: hottest pitcher. To hell with Porcello. Some guy in Los Angeles has allowed one run on 19 hits in his last 31 innings while striking out 43 and walking four. 28 straight scoreless.

Verlander wasn't great last year and has been awful this year since April.  He was good in April (2.48 ERA) and has a 5.36 ERA since.  And it's not like that's one or two bad starts messing things up - he's allowed 5 or more ERs six times.

And you're right - the dude in LA is the hottest pitcher going right now.

As if on cue, besides those homers, statistically he pitched fine and got the win today.

The Cubs/Red Sox game yesterday was bananas. Too bad the Cubs won't put up that many runs again this year.

The Cubs are shockingly not as terrible as I expected. IMO, there are five teams in the NL worse than them...well, until they end up blowing everything up, that is.

The Padres are going to interview Kim Ng for the GM job.

I desperately want a woman to become GM of a club but I don't know if I really want to wish the Padres upon Ng

Yeah.  It's like "Yay" followed by "what did she shoplift and from where to get paired up with MLB Santino?"

You can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Rizzo and Castro have had very strong years, we just have nothing around them. The pitching has been great, with a very strong top 3 in the rotation.

If we had a OF, we'd be in the playoff hunt.

tbh I think it's hilarious how Schierholtz, Lake, and Sweeney all got dramatically worse from 2013 to 2014. Maybe sell high on Valbuena like you didn't with Schierholtz and Sweeney (before he ran into the wall and hurt himself) last year, eh Theo?

I want to say that the Cubs pythag record is still something like .500 and it's nice that they're playing like a decent team. I also hesitate to say bye to Valbuena just because no one else in the minors are ready. I also wonder how much better this season would be if Schierholz didn't turn to dogshit. Lake too.

I don't know about that. Bryant could be called up now and start at 3rd and probably produce decently well. And Alcantara is hitting 310 with a 900 OPS with 20 steals at Iowa.

I don't think the question is of those 2 are ready, it's why call them up and use a year of there contract when this is a lost year.

All of the Cubs pythag records (first, second, third order) are right around the .500 mark, which is a good thing for them going forward.

If you're not familiar with pythag records, here's a quick primer.

First order is based solely on runs scored vs runs allowed. It's all well and good, but doesn't tell you a whole lot because differentials can get skewed pretty easily.

Second order is pythag record based on expected runs scored rather than actual. In other words, it attempts to strip out luck and sequencing.

Third order is second order with weighting based on quality of opponents.

Long story short, the Cubs may be nine games under, but they could easily be a .500 club with just some better luck over time. They Rays are another team with an absolutely terrible record this year that should be better based on their underlying stats - and of course, they've started to play better as of late (putting aside tonight's destruction in Detroit).

Jonah Keri actually wrote something today about clustering in regards to the Giants that's pretty fascinating.

Christ, that's a lot of words for a message board post on a Thursday night.

Zelous Wheeler - who has an amazing name - is another pseudo career minor leaguer who the Yanks called up and he hit a HR in his 2nd MLB at bat

So between and Tanaka... yeah... that is all I got this year
