The story I heard is that somebody wrote a letter pointing out that Superman's x-ray vision didn't make much sense, because if his eyes projected x-rays he wouldn't see through things, he'd burn and melt things. And the editorial staff were like "Cool! Let's run with it!" And I thought they were fairly consistent that the beams were invisible. I'd be surprised if they were completely consistent, though.
