Execproducer Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 So I just ordered Slingtv at 20 bucks a month for all of 14 channels, just so I can get in on the El Rey action.....despite the fact I probably own every movie on their schedule in one form or another. But still, I'm thinking money well spent. At least for the Shaw Brothers stuff, actually have quite a few movies that aren't (legally) available in English and in HD. I hope they can get access to the 80s/90s Hong Kong releases, Category III sleazy action like Naked Killer is custom made for this channel. Yeah, Cat III Night where stuff like Beauty Evil Rose was popping up would be great. As far as Shaw stuff, between grey market tapes that still work, vcd's bought in Chinatown, and stuff aquired otherwise, I have quite a bit. But that didn't stop me from watching Shaolin Mantis at 2am when I got slingtv set up.

This begs a discussion on the merits of both men and why you apparently think poorly about Fulci. Argento had his faults, but Suspiria is incredible. I think Profondo Rosso, Tenebre, Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Opera, and Inferno are also better than anything Fulci's ever done sans Zombi 2. Zombi is awesome, but Fulci never had the visual composition talent that Argento had. Both directors had plenty of nonsense (Phenomena is a hot mess) and gore in their films, but give me Argento's set pieces and flourishes over Fulci's anyday. There are a couple of sequences in House by the Cemetery and The Beyond that I like, but they aren't very good and Gates of Hell / City of the Living Dead is atrocious (despite opening pretty strong visually with the priest in Dunwich - one of Fulci's few moments of being pretty good). New York Ripper is probably the most embarassing, idiotic movie ever made. I don't even know where to begin with the Donald Duck voice. NYR is mind blowing in it's awfulness. Argento flat out sucked post-Stendahl Syndrome. Just completely lost his visual touch, but his earlier stuff was much better than Fulci's. Ages ago when I was first getting into Italian horror / giallo I was usually disappointed in the Fulci stuff people were raving about. Argento had a hand in writing the best movie ever made, so that goes a long way with me, too. He was also more influential, and De Palma's (who I am a big fan of) visual style owed a lot to him. Probably more accurate to say that they influenced each other, actually.

Curt McGirt Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Friday's Grindhouse feature is Sergio Corbucci's Companeros preceded by a replay of Django, Kill! and followed by a replay of Texas, Adios (which are both awesome). Then on Saturday we have a Spaghetti Western Marathon featuring: The Grand Duel Texas, Adios Companeros Django Django, Kill! Keoma and in the tradition of following every marathon up with two kung fu flicks we get Five Superfighters and The Sword Stained With Royal Blood (now THAT's what I call a title!). If you don't watch Keoma at the very least you are fucking up. EDIT: And yes, that is an Ennio Morricone soundtrack on the trailer above

It's one of those rare times where despite the DVR size I'm likely going to watch at least those two. Campaneros sounds so damn awesome, that's a must-watch. Those two kung fu movies sound insane, especially the second one. Might have to check those out.
Curt McGirt Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Sword of Swords was on again last night and though I haven't seen any other Zatoichi films, that's one hell of a version. The main villain is just super evil in that scene where he tries to murder the main dude, then calmly walks in and stabs the guy's betraying cousin to death. I would put the marathon in descending order of greatness from what I've seen: Django (of course) Keoma (honestly might be better than Django) Texas, Adios Django, Kill! The Grand Duel Grand Duel is a little dry and didn't hold my attention much, but has some awesome scenes. And c'mon, it's got Lee Van Cleef. Django Kill is pretty violent and has an interesting plot even if it's no match for its predecessor. Texas Adios really surprised me in that it's more of a traditional western. Nero isn't an antihero in this one and there are some great twists along the way; I wouldn't Wiki it if you don't want to be spoilered. Keoma is just gorgeous, harrowing, totally amazing. Django is Django. Better answer to "what's in the box?" than Seven, I think! 1
NikoBaltimore Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Texas Adios so far isn't holding my attention like the others are mainly because it's more traditional western. It took a little bit to get into Django, Kill, but holy crap it delivered. Django was wonderfully crazy. And Keomoa deserved any and all rewards it got/should have gotten. Even with the screen cut off due to SD I was fully immersed in the presentation (good example: Keoma holding four fingers) The presentation, story, awesome jump cuts and EPIC music make this by far my favorite spaghetti western. AND he had epic hair/facial to boot! And I'm a fan of Franco Nero. I need to see the rest of Texas, Adios, but he was excellent in the other two. I'm delighted to read he was Django, Unchained with a callback to Django. Need to see that movie now. I don't know how many more times I can profess my love for this network before it becomes overkill. But you can't go wrong with them showing you genres you never knew you'd love until you saw them.

Posted February 25, 2015 Author Posted February 25, 2015 Yeah, Texas Adios is a good Western but it is as close to a mainstream feel that you can get for a Spaghetti Western without having Clint Eastwood in it. Companeros, Keoma, and the Django movies are much closer to the rawer spirit of the genre.

If you wonder what Django Strikes Again/Rides Again/2, the only official sequel with Nero is like... well, it's pretty fucked up. Basically Django is doing a Rambo mission in the jungle and there is a lot of white slavery, rape and carnage. Really depressing and mean-spirited as I recall and though I own it, I haven't watched it since.

Companeros was already on last night and the bits I saw of it, restraining myself for the showing tomorrow night, were awesome. Oh yeah, almost forgot: after The Director's Chair with Coppola they're showing The Conversation. Maybe I'll finally get to see that all the way through now! (also: what a cool showing for El Rey, something with a bit more class. You'd think it'd be Dracula if anything, but no) I just had another massive idea for The Director's Chair and a marathon: ABEL FERRARA. Jeeeeeezuuuuuus! Think of the interview! It could be four hours long! Think of the films! I could finally see China Girl!

I remember wanting to see Texas Adios for Grindhouse but found it on that Monday night. Would be nice if they held off on showing them earlier and treat Grindhouse like a network premiere of some sort.

Posted February 27, 2015 Author Posted February 27, 2015 I don't think that El Rey has the rights to Bride With White Hair, but Shaw Brother's adaptation of Baifa Monu Zuan aka White Hair Devil Lady was pretty awesome. I would love to see that on television. It will be interesting to see if they can pull of an all lady kung-fu marathon without including a Pei-Pei Cheng movie. I would definitely pull The Lady Assassin and Lady Of The Law out of the archives for that marathon.

Franco Nero and Tomas Milian are the perfect odd couple with super chemistry and a sublime sense of humor throughout all the dirty deeds they get involved in, Fernando Rey provides a heart and soul to the proceedings, and Jack Palance is the super super evil villain throughout with his fake hand (stolen for Enter the Dragon, possibly) and beloved falcon. If you don't laugh your ass off at the guy getting a match lit in his nostril then you don't have a funny bone. Goddamn I love this movie. 1

Is Mimic the first Guillermo Del Toro movie to appear on El Rey? I hope Rodriguez gets the rights to show Chronos and The Devil's Backbone even though Hellboy, Hellboy 2, and Blade 2 may be closer to the flavor of the network.

That is one murderer's row of horror films (pardon the pun). If you haven't seen Inferno or Zombie before you're gonna be kicking yourself if you miss them. The Church is also awesome and Don't Torture A Duckling is deeply fucked up. 1
