So who's been to New Orleans before?

Curiously about some food places that I was thinking of going to:

1.  Is Jacque Imo's worth going to?   Seen great reviews but the fact that the places opens at 5:00 really puts strain on my schedule.  If I can do go it would have to be on Friday night and hope I doesn't take too long to get to Dragon Gate show that night.

2.  has anyone been to Willie Mae's Scotch House?   Again I have heard that the fried chicken there is a must to eat.   It is located in Treme which if the HBO show is any indication then a pretty bad area.

Hopefully I can just survive Thursday night because that is really the only day that I have no real night plans.   Plan is after the Jim Ross show at House of Blues just walk around the Quarter as much as possible and hope to end up at the Harrah's casino in a state to get a cab back to hotel.   :)

Yeah, only having one free day (thursday before JR show) means trying to do as much as i can. I wanted to go to the zephyrs stadium but think it may be too out of the way.

Other than eating and seeing bookstores and record stores for zydeco stuff, i dont know how to have time for things like museums and whqt not.

Willie Mae's Scotch House is fucking amazing.

I don't think neighborhood is that dangerous.

I would want to call and see their current hours, lots of places in N.O. have limited hours on limited days. I think they expanded their days before I left, but still check before going anywhere.

Jacque-Imo's is awesome, but if you're on a tight schedule, I'm not sure it's a great idea. Wait times can be absurd. And it's uptown, almost to Metarie, if I recall correctly. I don't know where the Dragon Gate show is going to be, but I'd guess "not near there."

Also, an important advisement: If your stomach is not accustomed to the gastronomy of New Orleans food, you should set aside some time in your schedule to take a shit. This is critical. You don't want to be caught out on the streets when you realize your digestive system was not prepared for that crawfish remoulade.

The best bars are outside the Quarter. Discovered one last year called "The John".Little corner dive bar. Where half the seats are made to look like toilets. Tipatinas is a decent club. And if you are brave enough The Dungeon is a nice place. One Eye Jacks is decent too.

I'll be driving down for 'Mania. Although I've been to New Orleans, that was in 2003, when KU went to the Final Four. I was 14 then, so the city has a fair bit more to offer me now than it did then... in theory. I do recall my friend and I getting buzzed to hell on Red Bull and the Folgers in our hotel room, then heading out to Bourban Street and easily buying beer, getting crazy drunk, puking in the hotel room, and then, the next night, watching Gerry Fucking McNamara ruin everything. So... probably a more tame time, at 25, actually, though I am going with the same friend.

Well, obviously, you don't want to be wandering down dark alleys, but we're talking about Poydras, Canal, and Loyola here, that area of town. Main tourist thoroughfares. These are safe places in general, and will be heavily trafficked and well policed on this particular weekend. There is no reason to fear for your safety.

That's definitely the area I'm staying so that's good to hear.

I'll be at the Mid South fanfest on Friday with the History of WWE selling books (Vol 1: http://t.co/oBXLHMYFPy  Vol 2 http://t.co/sEsHXdtAZP Vol 3 http://t.co/D6mRoDVovD ) if anyone wants to say hi.

I will try to come over and say hello during set-up. i have no idea what the set up will be like, as oposed to the layout of comic shows.

TROLLIES, BITCH.

Luckily there is a trolly about 2 blocks from my hotel.  Do you know the kind of hours they have at night?

I hope to make the Mid South Fan Fest Friday morning if I can survive the night ;)   Would have like to seen the Q&A with Midnights, R&R, and Dundee but from the look of it it is a package ticket deal and those were pricey.

THAT'S A FUCKING STREETCAR ASSHOLE!!!!!!!!!

But yeah, Willie Mae's is fantastic.  Acme Oyster House is WAY overrated, don't go there.  Do Drago's if you want oysters.  Cafe Du Monde is full of tourists and will probably be slammed for 'Mania, but it's still pretty delicious if you want brunch.  Court of Two Sisters is also pretty delicious for that.

My personal favorite bar in the Quarter is The Abbey on Frenchmen, this little metal dive with a cool jukebox.  Really, Frenchmen is the best part of the Quarter.

If you want to venture just a little bit out of the Quarter, head down Magazine.  And if you want to get shitfaced for cheap (like, $2 doubles cheap), head out to Ms. Mae's.  You might even see Rob Ryan there.

Drink Sazerac and if it's your first time there, go ahead and be a big tourist asshole and get a giant hand grenade.  You'll look stupid but will have a ton of fun.
