Dolfan in NYC Posted May 13 Posted May 13 Baby, there's something I think you should know. I don't think I'll be needing you anymore... It's just one of those things, I'm sure you'll understand Last week! Darby takes up golf? I've finally figured it out. Darby is doing everything possible to avoid becoming a Suburban Dad. But no matter how much he fights it... We've been together so long, I never meant to do you wrong. But I've found someone new, there's nothing you can say or do.... We also have a NEW National Champion! Don Callis and Ricochet on the same page? Despicable. Blessings to whoever was smart enough to put them together. Temptation, it's a part of life. It doesn't matter if its wrong or right. Temptation it's a part of life. It doesn't matter if its wrong or right, it makes you do what you like... On tap for this week! Woot. Owen V: The Owening~ "We'll hear from MJF" is a threat btw. (Just got back from Miami. Momma Dolfan says hi, btw. Had to pull out this house classic that was the sound of 1991 tenth grade dance parties across South Fla.) Enjoy the week! 4
Sex Machine Gun Posted May 13 Posted May 13 The Asheville crowd will prove the "bad crowd" for Raw just down the road in Knoxville two nights ago was just a crowd given a bad show and it has nothing to do with geography. If nothing else we know that main event will be something, though I really really am starting to wonder how much more Darby can do at this pace before a shoot injury takes him out for a while. Maybe him and Takeshita can have a fun graps match where Darby is a little wrestling goblin that keeps stymieing the bigger dude acting as a base. Ah, who am I kidding, there's going to be a spot where Takeshita hurls Darby into the third row from the stage. Doubt they have Takeshita lose, maybe some DCF shenanigans get him DQed. That six woman tag matchup means Shida is... actually a face? Here I thought she was the more sinister of her pairing with Stat this whole time. Ospreay and Quadzilla will be some athletic flippy dippy fun, or so we thought until Ospreay debuts his new ground and pound moveset learned from the Death Riders. Okay, so that's not happening but it would be awesome if Ospreay suddenly had completely different styles of wrestling depending on situation. Prob'ly spend the 10-man tag farting around on my phone and looking up every time the crowd pops for something. 1

I certainly wasn't expecting Perry to lose the title in what seemed slated to be another routine televised defense.

I'm a fan of Jack Perry as I was a fan of his late father and he made a nice National champion. However, IF there ever was a modern day wrestler who could carry that yesteryear looking championship, it's Mark Davis. I'm looking forward to his title defenses, especially if he somehow runs into RUSH! 3
Technico Support Posted May 13 Posted May 13 (edited) Mark Davis is awesome and I'm happy he won that belt, even if it looks tiny with him holding it. Thank you @Dolfan in NYC for getting that classic stuck in my head! Edited May 13 by Technico Support 3

Thank you @Dolfan in NYC for getting that classic stuck in my head! The NWA TV title looked relatively tiny when held by Arn (and would have even moreso if ever held by Stan Hansen) so it totally tracks! Funny, I don't believe I have ever heard this "Temptation" track before! The '91 Shartnado was pretty well versed in contemporary dance music, at least by the hick-ass small town I came from, thanks to my mom and older sister, but somehow this has eluded me at the time. Edited May 13 by Shartnado Huh, new 90's music? 3
HarryArchieGus Posted May 13 Posted May 13 Quote * AEW World Championship Match: Darby Allin vs. Konosuke Takeshita. * Adam Copeland, Christian Cage, Orange Cassidy, & Young Bucks vs. FTR, Tommaso Ciampa, and The Dogs. * Triangle of Madness vs. Brawling Birds & Hikaru Shida. * Will Ospreay vs. Ace Austin. * MJF set to appear. * Men’s and Women’s Owen Hart tournament brackets to be announced. Very happy with the Davis title win. Long time favourite. Darby-Takeshita will be magnificent. Darby continues his campaign for 'all time greatest AEW World champion'. I suspect the Triangle-Birds/Shida match will be story heavy. They have a (UGH!) 4 way to promote. Ace'spray should be a heckuva bout. I like seeing a guy like Ace Austin getting opportunities for his hard work. That's AEDubbya. I like everybody in the 10 man tag, and I'm sure it could be very good, but I'd love it if they stopped with so many of these 8 and 10 mans. Too many bodies. Can't we just stick to Trios? I'm hoping for high stakes matches across the Owen brackets this year. 1
Shartnado Posted May 13 Posted May 13 (edited) Yeah, Ace vs Ospreay in a thighs from hell match should be exactly the kind of almost main eventer vs plucky undercarder match that people bring up in conversations for a long time. If it's actually going to be that is anyone's guess? For whatever reason, the idea of Ciampa mixing up with Copeland is intriguing to me! In-shape old people kicking each others' asses for the win! Kinda like bumfights with slightly less shame! Bring it on! Edited May 13 by Shartnado some grammar, I guess? 1

I’m still not even caught up with last week, so I didn’t comment on it on the thread but I am exceptionally happy for Mark Davis and think it will lead to more interesting matches (and not just because I dislike Perry)
JLowe Posted May 13 Posted May 13 Also, that’s a total jam that I haven’t heard in a long time! Didn’t realize it was ‘91, in my head it’s lumped in with mid-80s freestyle-adjacent dance pop although now I hear the strong house elements. 1

To be completely honest, I'd originally written 1988 because I was sure I'd danced to it in Junior High. But nope... Also I originally thought it was Exposé. 1
tbarrie Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Well that was a hell of a show, in my opinion. One quibble: I thought Ospreay gave Austin way too much. If they're trying to get across the idea that the Death Riders' training has made Ospreay more dangerous than ever - and I don't know, maybe I'm misunderstanding where they're going and they're not trying to do that at all - but if they are, then putting him in a long, highly competitive match against a guy whom he was already way above was absolutely not the way to do it. I liked the ending of the match, though.
The Natural Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Samoa Joe vs. Will Ospreay in the Men's Owen Hart tournament. Two reactions: Fuck, I'm going to have to watch a Will Ospreay match whom I can't stand because I love Samoa Joe. Sucks Joe will jobbing to him.
Spaceman Spiff Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Where's MJF get that Dynamite Diamond Ring? I thought he gave it to Don Callis to use in the match against Darby?

As I recall, in the lead-up to Bandido winning it, they at least strongly implied that it was a new ring every year. So MJF has like almost half a dozen of them. 1
Spaceman Spiff Posted May 14 Posted May 14 (edited) So how many does he carry on his person at any 1 time? Just weird that they make a point of him giving 1 to Callis, and then featuring MJF with one on in the post match segment without it being commented on. Just have MJF comment that the one he gave Callis was a fake, because why would he let his precious be out of his sight for an extended period of time, especially with someone as disreputable as Don Callis? Anyway, Darby's kick into the guillotine choke is a dope move. Edited May 14 by Spaceman Spiff
Sex Machine Gun Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Pretty sure he brought the second one with the express intent of giving it to Callis. The other was his real wearin' ring for the night.
SirFozzie Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Every time I think Darby has found all the ways he could attempt to commit grevious bodily harm upon himself in the ring, he comes up with a new one. In this case, the words "Avalanche bridging german suplex". That's putting a LOT of trust in Takashita. 2
DreamBroken Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Opening 10 man was fun. Welcome back Brian Cage after over a year away. Ospreay/Ace ruled, dug the DQ finish in the trios, and the main event was killer. Really liked Speedball's fired up promo and would love to see him as world champ one day. Both Owen Cups look fairly straightforward. Assuming Athena has to finally win it after losing in the semis in 2023 and 2025. 2

NoFistsJustFlips Posted May 14 Posted May 14 I think this is going to be an opinion I'm alone on, and thats okay. But I hate the Death Riders Mox-ifying Ospreay. Story wise and in ring work wise the story they are telling is stop being flippy start being meaner. Everyone on the planet is capable of using a cross armbreaker as a finish, why did they need Ospeay to dial it back so drastically? Despite that, still hoping for an Ospreay win in The Owen. MJF to have a movie role lined up where he needs to be bald, an Kyle Fletcher to return just in time to snatch the world title from a drained and weakened Darby at Forbidden Door, boom Fletcher vs Ospreay for the title at All In. They really havent set that up at all. So its not likely, but its what Im pulling for. 1
hammerva Posted May 14 Posted May 14 That opening segment where MJF walks by what felt like every bald person that works for AEW or the Arena was just hilarious. Even gave us the extremely rare Jon Silver appearance 7
