Dolfan in NYC Posted April 22 Posted April 22 Ground Control to Major Tom... Ground Control to Major Tom... Take your protein pills and put your helmet on... WE HAVE A NEW AEW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD! (VKM is a horrible person... but he was 100% right about Justin Roberts always putting himself over. This moment isn't about you.) Ground Control to Major Tom (10, 9, 8, 7, 6)... Commencing countdown, engines on (5, 4, 3, 2)... Check ignition and may God's love be with you (1, lift off)... Over on the ladies side... Thekla punched Alex Windsor all the way back to Japan (Nit pick... but getting beaned in the temple with brass knux can legitimately kill you and should really be the end of a match. ) This is Ground Control to Major Tom... You've really made the grade! And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear. Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare... Tonight! We have Dynamite... and on tap... already a title defense?? So, I wonder if that "we'll hear from the new AEW Champion" is set before or after the title defense. Because it could get... awkward. (I don't think I've ever seen the video for this song before just now. It definitely gets over the theme of the alienation of fame.) Enjoy the week! 3
Technico Support Posted April 22 Posted April 22 If we can never use “moment” in a pro wrestling context ever again, that would be great and you have my eternal gratitude. It’s so douchy and lame. “Waaaah I want my mOmEnT” sounds like a fucking Hallmark card. 2 1 1
JLowe Posted April 22 Posted April 22 “The papers want to know who’s shirts you wear” is a very sly reference to the PWtees controversy! Someone on Bluesky calls Ciampa “Tommy Chompers” and I might have to steal that since Poopdeck Pappy is an inside joke to me only apparently. Also, never has someone gotten so many title shots without doing shit to earn them. 3

I don’t think I’ve really enjoyed him since he got off the indies and into the Gargano Vortex. 1 1
Cobra Commander Posted April 23 Posted April 23 (edited) Things I Remember From This Week's Edition of AEW Dynamite: MJF is angry and he almost wrestles Kevin Knight, but he'll wrestle him next week Brody King squashes Lio Rush Wil Ospreay loses due to Doctor's Stoppage and is abducted by the Hurt Syndicate Death Riders Samoa Joe squashes a schlubby looking dude Jericho trademarking stuff and making friends with the Hurt Syndicate Copeland gonna put his team that has been reunited for like 8 months on the line for a title match Darby thanking the Sherpas and MJF interrupting Darby and Ciampa starting early (because I didn't know about the hard out) and having a bloody old time Darby vs Brody next week If MJF wanted to really cause chaos, he would have said he was gonna try pushing AEW past their hard out due to the Stanley Cup playoffs Edited April 24 by Cobra Commander 1
Yo-Yo's Roomie Posted April 23 Posted April 23 After all the chatter about the percentage of wrestling to non-wrestling on the rape apologist fascist sympathiser show last weekend, this would have been a great time to start with a hot match and not a talking segment. This was my first time seeing this new Lio Rush gimmick in action. I'll give it a chance, but my initial reaction is that Lio is too good for this. I like Mina, but she sure is sloppy. I like Shida too and it's good to have her back. I was thinking about Willow's comeback killer gimmick. Any chance it leads to the return of Britt Baker? It can't just be leading to Mercedes's return, can it? She has to go for the world title now. Mark Davis is so fucking good. Easy top 10 guy in the company. Head and shoulders above everyone in the DCF, except maybe Andrade. I'm not really a Ciampa fan, but that main event was absolutely killer. I'm definitely here for Darby just fucking tearing it up every week as champion, a flame burning brightly but briefly kind of thing. I haven't enjoyed a match that much in a long, long time and am super looking forward to the match with Brody next week. All in all, this was the best show for a good few weeks. 3

DreamBroken Posted April 23 Posted April 23 Enjoyed the opening and setup to tease MJF/Knight for the TNT. Brody/Lio was solid. Digging Lio being all over the TV lately. Shida/Mina was pretty fun. Incredible put over for Mark Davis with the rare doctor stoppage getting a victory over Ospreay. Killer performance had Davis looking stronger than ever. Intrigued by the post-match Death Riders scene. Generally never been a Ciampa fan, but that main event was pretty good stuff. Loving this hot start to Darby's gonna take on all challengers everywhere run. 2
Cobra Commander Posted April 23 Posted April 23 it won't be next week for a few obvious reasons but you'd think Darby defending against a face might be a prelude to somebody turning heel in a match with Darby 1
Cobra Commander Posted April 23 Posted April 23 (edited) also, on thinking about it for a moment, the timing of the "FUCK ICE" chants at the beginning of Brody's match gave off an unintentional "Yankee Stadium bleacher fans doing the roll call at the beginning of the game" energy Edited April 23 by Cobra Commander 3
Jenalysis Posted April 23 Posted April 23 My wife loves this episode. She loved the Lio Rush gimmick. She called it Gollum, and felt it was really cool seeing Gollum frustrate Brody, and she really, really loves Brody with all her heart. (we even made Brody cookies) My wife knew nothing about Ciampa before his AEW run. My wife is a fan now. My wife is fully on the casual fan spectrum, but she knows when someone is good. Mina was obviously hurt otnight. She had this huge patch on the back of her thigh- and a huge lump. I think she's ibjured, and that's why the match kinda stunk. This was below what you'd expect from Shida and Mina. My wife loves the Shida/Kris pairup, and says Stat has ace energy (and she means it in both senses of the word) Both of us were getting really annoyed at the Ospreay doctor stop spots, so we were both happy there was an actual doctor stop finally. Wifey loves Davis as well for being a bear and a huge Run the Jewels fan, so she was super happy Davis got a big win. Wifey got to see Marina afterwards, and my Wifey has a thing for Marina, so she was super happy. The Jericho stuff doesn't do much for my wife, and she likes Ricochet as a dweeb heel, and it entertains her. Jericho and Ricochet deserve each other IMO. Put stuff I don't care about in one segment att least. 1
Evil Otto Posted April 23 Posted April 23 Let's just keep pushing Mark Davis higher and higher up the card. He's killing it. I'm fully on board with the concept of heel Shida. Persephone is a surprisingly seamless temporary asskicker fill-in for Jamie Hayter. I approve. People seem to have mixed feelings about Ciampa, but hot damn, with tonight's match fresh in my mind, he's certainly alright with me. 2
Technico Support Posted April 23 Posted April 23 Ciampa feels like he went to the Dax Harwood school of babyface promos, and that's not a compliment. I hope the Lio Rush thing is something they get behind and push, because it's weird and fun. Mina might have been hurt, but she's always been a little sloppy, clumsy, and slow in the ring. Anything she does that's a little bit acrobatic looks like she's putting a ton of effort into it. Mark Davis rules. 1
Pete Posted April 23 Posted April 23 I didn't have "Tomasso Ciampa spraying blood like a Wagner Power Painter" on my bingo card for the night but I was there for it. That match was MANLY. If someone has a rational explanation for them doing a ref stop finish so Ospreay avoids jobbing clean to the guy who ISN'T a defending world champion, I'd love to hear it.
Cobra Commander Posted April 23 Posted April 23 You’d think a rematch with Ospreay and Davis where “the doctor cannot stop the match” is gonna be in order. As backwards as it might seem to have a stip meant to get the babyface’s ass whipped more 1
Zimbra Posted April 23 Posted April 23 How long do you think Darby has been dying to recreate that video of the backyarder doing an air raid crush off the roof? 2
caley Posted April 23 Posted April 23 I only saw the early segment with Jericho-Demand (So I don't know if he comes back later) but I noticed the interviewer (Can't remember if it was Renee) referred to him only as "Jericho" and his graphic also said "Jericho". So is his new iteration that he loves wrestling and doesn't have a first name?! 1

Steventon Posted April 23 Posted April 23 Holy fuck, Darby vs Ciampa was awesome. If Darby's run is gonna be short, a run of bangers like that would still make it an all-timer. holy shit 6
Shartnado Posted April 23 Posted April 23 (edited) What I was able to make out of the shitty and choppy feed, Ciampa vs Darby was amazing! Something tells me that Darby's reign is going to be epicly long (as in absolutely not goingto). The Psycho Driller to the floor ended up biting Ciampa in the ass at the end of the match. Lio Rush seems to be super committed to his new character, but it seems like something I will pretty much refuse to watch. Lio vs PAC (from last week) would have been batshit in 2021, I mean it still was, but for a totally different reason! Say what you want about MJF's mic skills (and this week wasn't the greatest) but the delivery, timing and emphasis on "You don't deserve SHIT!" was perfect, eventhough the actual statement was total bullshit (which was obviously the point and thus made this even better)! There's gonna be some stipulations going on at, Double or Nothing, let me tell ya! Edited April 23 by Shartnado clarification 1

HarryArchieGus Posted April 23 Posted April 23 (edited) Wow, pretty goddamn incredible show. The entire Main Event segment from Schiavone's introduction to the hug to the solid mic work to MJF to Ciampa-Darby to Brody raising Darby's arm was beautiful pro wrestling. Big, big emotions. Edited April 25 by HarryArchieGus Ha, not big bug emotions (I don't think) 3
