He was arguing that the challenge shouldn't have been allowed. His arguement that Os closer Ryan Helsley took too long to challenge Remember - ABS challenges are supposed to be done instantly and, by rule, the player is not supposed to make any other movement than signalling for the challenge. Tangentially - this is folks biggest fear with ABS is that umps are gonna get pissed and just not allow the challenge for bullshit reasons
RIPPA Posted March 30 Posted March 30 And per Helsley - Laz Diaz of all people helped get the call right
RIPPA Posted March 30 Posted March 30 The Nats' Joey Wiemer becomes the first player in franchise history (and this one includes the Expos) to reach base in each of his first 6 career plate appearances (previous high was 4 by three different players including Larry Walker)

And I have no doubt that umps are going to start getting pissed at overturns - especially ones where they were wrong by 0.1" - and start taking it out on people.
Pete Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Tremendous, though it might be a better walk-out song for the umpires. 1
odessasteps Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Surprised no one posted about the Mets offering velour track suits in the team store.
Hamhock Posted March 30 Posted March 30 I'm a huge fan of anything that gets calls correct. However, much like replay on successful stolen bases where someone's hand comes off the bag by a micrometer for a millisecond and they then call him out, it can get a little stupid with edge-cases. I could envision a tweak to the ABS challenges where if it falls within a certain buffer zone, you get the call overturned but still burn the challenge. That would probably eliminate most of the 1/10" off the plate ones, and provide for ample overturn of the egregious ones.
Cobra Commander Posted March 30 Posted March 30 good work by myself on not getting totally roasted attending a mid-80s temperature opening day game (there's a shot i'll notice some sort of sunburn later but not yet).. also the wonder of the pitch clock (and a 3-1 game) means my phone battery did not get totally murdered. Also, it's harder to read Wikipedia entries during day games. Night games a few years ago with bad Royals teams, I was combing the WIkipedia app at games

RIPPA Posted March 31 Posted March 31 The Yankees went 5 for 5 on ABS challenges in yesterday's game All 5 were done before the 4th inning was over This will definitely be the new way Aaron Boone gets ejected - yelling at an ump for provably being wrong For example

I know I've been in NYC too long when I know these are more commonly known as frittele. Savory donuts/zeppole you'll get in southern Italian food. Think garlic bread, but puffy and super absorbent. Fucking amazing when you're eating olive oil or Calabrian pepper heavy food. Also, an insane mess to deal with if you eat more than one.

Dolfan in NYC Posted March 31 Author Posted March 31 The Mariners have signed Colt Emerson to an 8/95 extension (with incentives that can push it to 130) To date, Mr. Emerson has zero major league at bats.
RIPPA Posted March 31 Posted March 31 Jose Ramirez played his 1,614th game for Cleveland That ties him with Nap Lajoie for 2nd all time in franchise history He should move into 1st some time next week (Terry Turner - 1,619) When he does so - he becomes the only active player to be a franchises all time leader in games played 2

Turner played shortstop and switched just before Ray Chapman arrived, then Turner moved to third, and started playing more second once Lajoie got old. Turner was barely out of the league by the time that Ray Chapman was killed by a pitch. it's like if Willie Bloomquist played 1600 games for a team. Bill James ranks him #92 among shortstops as of 2001ish (new Historical Abstract) and calls Turner the most obscure player to hold a games played record. The Turner entry also talks about how he had a serious beaning, which was mentioned in books/articles about Ray Chapman's death
