Dolfan in NYC Posted March 27 Author Posted March 27 In case you need to scratch a particular OCD itch
RIPPA Posted March 27 Posted March 27 The Giants are the first team to be shut out with five or fewer hits over the first two games of the season
odessasteps Posted March 28 Posted March 28 Apparently the super expensive Ohtani cup at Dodger Stadium gets you free refills all season, if you have it, not just for the season opener.
Cobra Commander Posted March 28 Posted March 28 the downside is that the cup is on the line 24/7 and you will have to wrestle others to retain the cup 1 4

Signs at the stadium say they're only good the day of purchase. $75 for an all-year free refill cup would be a good deal if you plan to attend a handful of games.
odessasteps Posted March 28 Posted March 28 Someone posted today it was either misinterpreted or they changed it after the bad press. I can’t find the tweet right now, if I f8nd it, ill add it later.
RIPPA Posted March 28 Posted March 28 I know people are memeing on this but to me this will help the good umps continue to learn what the system is considering strikes Also shows that a team with a vet catcher is gonna be more comfortable letting them potentially burn all their challenges 1
Travis Sheldon Posted March 28 Posted March 28 As an old man baseball fan, those were all strikes. Right at the knee and dead down the middle. If they're getting you with that pitch, move up in the box a bit. You've got to be able to adjust if you're going to be a successful hitter. 2
Cobra Commander Posted March 28 Posted March 28 Extra context to the Salvy/Eddings clip: the pitches that Sale was getting called strikes compared to what had to be challenged

RIPPA Posted March 29 Posted March 29 The Jays RP Mason Fluharty was hit on the right leg by two batted balls in the 7th and had to be removed Toronto says the x-rays say there is no fracture And to make things wacky - because Fluharty technically allowed two infield singles which the As took advantage of to score 5 runs Thus the Jays had to rally to send the game into extras and then again in the 10th before finally winning on a walk off HR in the 11th
hammerva Posted March 29 Posted March 29 The early downside of this ABS system to me is that it feels like the game is slower. But it is a small test case The upside is that it is has exposed some bad umps and it feels like teams are just fucking with some of them to expose how bad they are. There is really no reason to challenge calls in the 1st inning (in some cases on the 1st pitch) unless you have runners in scoring position. Guys like CB Bucknor who I believe had his first 2 pitches checked are eventually going to just say the hell with you and retire. Which given how most of his calls so far has been reversed maybe it is a good thing
RIPPA Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Oh yeah watching CB get enraged because his calls keep getting overturned is the best 2
Dolfan in NYC Posted March 29 Author Posted March 29 Note, the Marlins are a mere 160 games away from a perfect season. Owen Caissie looks legit. And today, they're busting out the fine china 1

Which given how most of his calls so far has been reversed maybe it is a good thing CB had 8 calls challenged and was overturned 6 times. The Reds were 5 for 5 in challenges against him. CB is terrible but... I think the ABS graphic kind of exaggerates how wrong a call is. The system makes it look like a call missed by 1 inch is huge and obvious. Spoiler: it's not. I wouldn't mind seeing something that punishes catchers for jerking the glove to frame it. Not really ABS related, I just hate it.
odessasteps Posted March 29 Posted March 29 I’ve seen people raving about ABS but all I can think of how people wanted VAR in futbol and now it’s largely ruined the flow of games, the live experience and how people game the system.
Cobra Commander Posted March 29 Posted March 29 so far ABS has been the quickest review system I've seen in baseball, it skipped past "trying to load nudie photos in 1997" speed right to "trying to load nudie photos in 2026" speed
Tabe Posted March 29 Posted March 29 What is he even arguing? The challenge came right away, the call is made objectively... I don't get it.
Dolfan in NYC Posted March 30 Author Posted March 30 Probably one of those "I have to try something", because the challenge is the difference between a base runner and the inning ending. He's 100% wrong even though, and I'm guessing he made it personal, which is why he got run.

I didn't make the team, but my next-door neighbor in my dorm at Northwestern (Glenn Geffner) was their announcer for many years. Edited March 30 by Gorman 1
