It was one of those weird times when JR should've been drooling about all teh Football but nothing about the match really clicked the way it could've. It may have also been because the match was tossed together at the last minute because Rude torched his neck a couple house shows before Starrcade and Doc ended up pulling double duty. The double duty saw Doc pull the AJPW Heavy vs. Junior template out against Liger earlier and JR was all about that. 1 1

Ironically enough, WrestleMe recently covered this exact PPV: Commentary between the two just plain devolved into Jesse talking by himself followed by JR with long, very awkward pauses and not answering anything Jesse said/asked. 2
Wyld Samurai Posted March 8 Posted March 8 If Steamboat was still active in 1998 he is 100% teaming with the baby face Horsemen against the nWo. He isnt playing the part of a gatekeeper. 2
twiztor Posted March 8 Posted March 8 Watching TNA Impact this morning. 10/29/2009. they just made an announcement that Hulk Hogan has joined TNA. Your ears perk at the deep thumping of distant of war drums. In the recesses of your mind you know the end was coming, but your pulse rate quickens. 4

Steamboat vs Hennig in fall 1997 feels like the sort of match with unmet expectations because 97 Hennig is what he was and the match ends in 3 minutes with a run in 6
ExcellenceofAirPollution Posted March 9 Posted March 9 (edited) What's the deal with Zilla Fatu? He wrestled MJF on a House of Glory show and now he's wrestling Brody King Is there a reason he isn't under contract to WWE or AEW yet? Seems odd both that he isn't under WWE contract, and that Tony K is cool with him wrestling AEW guys while not under contract when he's clearly on everyone's radar Edited March 9 by ExcellenceofAirPollution
Cobra Commander Posted March 9 Posted March 9 isn't the catch with Zilla Fatu that he could be the Samoan Teddy Hart out of the ring? 1 1
Cobra Commander Posted March 9 Posted March 9 extra hypothetical "Steamboat in the late 90s" note: Ricky Steamboat vs Buff Bagwell would have probably been one of the better Buff Bagwell matches if it had happened around 1997 2
Casey Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Rovert out here saying Athena was blackballed (yeesh) from the Texas indie scene once upon a time. What’s the tea on that, or is it just Rovert making shit up?

Despite being a Booker T student he isn't actually in WWE so there is no reason to block AEW guys from wrestling him. If anything it might make him more amenable to the idea of AEW despite WWE having the obvious pluses for him with his family. 1

And Luger did play about seven years of professional football. He bounced around the CFL, NFL, and USFL from 79-85. So, JR wasn’t spewing bullshit, but did overstate Luger’s success as a pro football player. 2

He was a GCW regular for a while then no-showed a few events on what was I believe Summerslam weekend, but showed up backstage at that show. It sounds like a case of him thinking his family name is going to get him further than it is. 2
Cobra Commander Posted March 9 Posted March 9 amused at the "Steve Wright with some chain wrestling and his son Alex Wright does similar move" video on Reddit has Steve Wright against Tiger Mask and Alex Wright against Bunkhouse Buck although Buck did handle himself well in that whole sequence. Jimmy Golden vs Tiger Mask could have been fun 4
twiztor Posted March 9 Posted March 9 that Alex-Buck sequence isn't even remotely close to what Steve was doing vs. Tiger Mask. But i've seen Alex do all of those moves. I guess i'm saying that they should have chosen a better clip to compare. 1
Cobra Commander Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Alex Wright in Mexico would have been a fun novelty, but I suspect his height relative to most cruisers kinda makes it a little complex to do too much flipping

He was a lot smoother as time progressed then that clip would suggest.
Technico Support Posted March 9 Posted March 9 (edited) It's just personal preference and YMMV and all that, but I can't stand that style. People crap on today's highspot style but that old "British style" of seamlessly floating in and out of holds with not just a total lack of struggle, but actual complete and obvious cooperation (shit, you can see TM literally pulling Wright up off the mat in those arm wringers) is, to me, even more showy and business-exposing. You can't call modern style like AEW "interpretive dance" while glazing this style in the same breath. I remember watching ZSJ (before he figured shit out) and Marty Scurll on a PWG show and it was awful. Just an exhibition of two guys exchanging and escaping the lightest holds you've ever seen, like "look how British we are!" It was terrible. Again, enjoy what you enjoy, this is just me giving one dude's dumbass opinion of overwrought British style. Edited March 10 by Technico Support 1
Cobra Commander Posted March 9 Posted March 9 a certain amount of the people doing WOS Style these days is basically British white dudes doing breakdancing moves but yeah I could see how "elaborate moves to get out of a wrist lock" feels performative when there's fewer wrist locks these days 1
Elsalvajeloco Posted March 9 Posted March 9 To be fair, especially when it comes to Japan during that time period, they didn't bring in British/European wrestlers (or luchadores) to NOT wrestle their own style. They wanted folks to lean all the way in, and they'll adapt and adjust to YOU. A lot of those matches were specifically designed to be showcases. However, as time went with the junior heavyweights, you got a lot of guys because of excursions wrestling like the people they were bringing in so there wasn't much variance. 2 1

Your ears perk at the deep thumping of distant of war drums. In the recesses of your mind you know the end was coming, but your pulse rate quickens. 11/5/2009. the following week. We open with Dixie Carter addressing the TNA roster and staff. This is not in front of the crowd, this is earlier in the day. Let me just transcribe exactly what she says (spoilered for length): Spoiler "Since I was named President 6 years ago, I've had a lot of people telling me how to run a wrestling company. And while I appreciate their contributions, it's time for a change. We've had a lot of great things going on in this company. We've made a lot of changes in the last few months that I'm sure you've seen and we've made a bigger change even last week. I can assure you that we'll have more changes coming in the coming weeks and the coming months as well. Nobody likes drastic change, nobody likes big moves, I understand that. And it effects different people different ways. And while i respect that those of you out there might have differing opinions of the decisions that I'm making, I expect you to support me 100%. When you question things in this company, you're questioning me. And I cannot allow that to happen. Business is about choices. I've made the choice to put my finances, my reputation, my passion, my love, behind each and every one of you, and this company. And it's time for you to do the same thing. You have a choice to make. You can choose to support me, you can choose to support the direction TNA is going, or you can choose not to. But you'll need to find another place to work. It's time for us to swing for the fences. It really is. No great success comes without risk. And I'm great with that. I hope you are too. Now's our time. I look out at the faces that have made this company, and you've made me very proud. But this is a test. So I'm asking all of you to step it up. In every way possible. And let's do this thing together. Because now's our time and you've gotta believe it. If you don't believe it, you're hurting the person sitting next to you. You're hurting me, you're hurting our fans. But if you believe it, let's do this thing together. And let's show everybody what we're all about. Holy fuck, if i was working for TNA i would be looking for another job. FUCK anybody that tells you "i cannot allow you to question me." If this was supposed to be a rah-rah speech, it doesn't look like it landed. Most of the roster looked uninterested. IMO this makes Dixie look less like the leader she thinks she is, and more like somebody who thinks they know what they are doing, but are just flailing. i have led a number of teams/people both at work and in extracurricular activities. I constantly TELL my team to question me, or to call me out (professionally if in public or any way they want if in private) if I am doing something that doesn't make sense. it would never cross my mind to stand in front of my team and tell them to fall in line and do what i say, or get to stepping. The live show starts with AJ Styles coming to the ring, cementing that he is fully behind TNA's choices and talking about how great it is that Hulk Hogan is coming in. This just REEKS of trying to sell your audience something they're not buying. edited to add: as this show goes on, i'm getting real Poochie vibes. I know Hogan is a huge signing, but this is ridiculous. Whenever Poochie Hulk's not on screen, all the other characters should be asking "Where's Poochie Hulk Hogan?" to continue the theme of my post from yesterday, the pace of the war drums increases.
